Fell Champs Race 5

In an inappropriately unseasonable reference, I notice that it's still 189 days to Christmas.  But on the plus side that gives plenty of time for fell racing before Santa Claus comes visiting and as an early present we have a selection box of races over the next 4 weeks with a cracker each week. Behind the first window in the calendar on Wednesday is a welcome return to Harrock Hill's well martialed and runnable course.

Horwich 5

Well another race completed in our Road Championships and there is only really two words that I can use to describe this race, "Bloody Midgies"

The chaos of parking started to commence from 6.30pm followed by usual queing for registration and toilets.

24 blue vests managed to registered on time with just Phil Riley missing out, but he still completed the race as a training run - Good Man !!

Mark Lysycia was on hand at the start to take the accustom group photograph, however by this time most of us had been bitten numerous times and were already playing Dot to Dot !!

The race started promptly and 248 runners set of on the beautiful scenic route round Rivington. The weather was kind again and it was great to finally have a road race, on a ROAD !  (Don't get used to it)  The route consisted of two loops with a roller coaster style hill on each lap.  It was great to see Shaun Moran and Susan Gregory at the top of the hill shouting encouragement along with the ever present Michaela Shaw.

Unfortunately it wasn't a race to hang around for at the end as the midges were out in full force on the finish line and I for one is suffering from the bites this morning.

First back for A&T was Simon Ford which is a great send off prior to his BOB GRAHAM round next week - we wish him well .   Simon was followed home by Neil Hughes and Matt Thorpe.

First back for the ladies was Josie Maley who was sixth overall and picked up a prize, next home were the two sisters in Louise Simpson and Rachel Haslam.

Ian Hamilton picked up an award for 1st V65 so great effort again.

A&T results below.

Two Lads Fell Race Report - Kieran Lomas

Another good turnout at Walsh 2 lads fell race with 5 A&Ters turning out. We all met at the Bridge Inn for a scenic  5.2 miles over the south Pennines. Weather conditions were very stuffy but the rain kept off. We all met at the front of the Bridge Inn and after congratulating Tim on his Great Britain appearance Clare then pointed out the hill we would be running up and any excitement we had quickly turned to fear. We moved 50 yards down from the pub and after a quick safety talk we were off. After a mile or so of incline I believed the worst must be done but I was wrong, I looked up to see the line of runners in front weaving their way even further up the hill. I could just make out Tim’s blue vest high upon the hillside with the mountain rescue jeep close by at the top and with a sinking heart I thought I might be needing them by the time I get up there.
Once at the top however the course levelled out for a scenic run, culminating in a quick descent to the finish line.  Fell captain Tim came in as 1st vet 40 closely followed by Simon. The ladies ended on great sprint finish with Joanne just pipping Clare to the post.
Tim Campbell 35.35
Simon ford 38.58
Kieran Lomas 50.11
Joanne Gibson 1.03.06
Clare Unsworth 1.03.06

Gin Pit Sponsorship Update

So far we have had two companies come forward with offers of sponsorship, so we just need one more to enable us to get 'both sides' of the Gin Pit 5 t-shirts printed.

As stated we expect to get 200-250 entries for the event, and i'm sure runners will wear them for training so plenty of advertising coverage around the local area.

If interested please email
