A&T Take over Parkrun

Just over a year ago club members took over Pennington Flash parkrun. This involved members occupying every single volunteer role on the day, proudly wearing the blue kit and raising the club's profile in the community.

We are planning to do this again on Saturday 4th March.  Our road captain Chris will take up the role of Run Director which, includes ensuring the course is set up, the run goes smoothly, the cabin is open for refreshments and results are processed. Louise has already expressed an interest in 'finish tokes' which leaves several vacant roles including 'time keeper', 'back up timer', 'bar code scanner' (4), marshal (4), tail runner & 'run report writer'. I am confident we can fill all these roles and if we could get 6 or so more, it would be great to send out a team of 'A&T pacers'.

If you can make the date and fill a role please let me know either by Facebook messenger or email If you've no particular preference for a role, you will will be allocated with one. Please send me your name and parkrun barcode number.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Treasurer’s report.
Malcolm reported after a turbulent year in 2015, 2016’s accounts were calmer but with continuing increases to costs mainly England Athletics memberships the club’s bank account had reduced by £910. He suggested subs be put up by £5 to £35 for current members with a view that they may need to go up a further £5 next year as England Athletic fees are set to continue to rise. This was accepted by the members attending the meeting.
Current members have 28 days to renew or their membership will lapse.
New rates are:-
Membership renewal £35
New membership £40
2nd Claim membership £21

Malcolm also reminded people to enter the Gin Pit Half as many say they are going to enter and to date haven’t.

Volunteering at this year’s Manchester Marathon was discussed. We would like to do it again as it is enjoyed by the volunteers and our members who run, as well as a good source of income to the club. Lynn also mentioned helping out at Ironman and the revenue that brings into the club.

David Sloan spoke about the Ultra section, there will be a list of races and more information on the website shortly. To be considered in Ultra champs members need to have done the minimum of 1 ultra (50k or longer) and 2 trail marathons.

7th May 2017

Manchester marathon 2nd April 2017 – by Mark Riches

If you want to help out at this year’s race, part of the pre-race preparation is to register your details on line. This information is needed for emergency contact details and also helps me to see how marshal registration is progressing as we need to provide 20 marshals again this year in order to have our usual water station

The registration will take just a couple of minutes and the process is as follows:
You need to choose the drinks station marshal option on this page:

The group code for Astley & Tyldesley Road Runners is GMMATRR and you then need to complete the personal details as requested.

The organisers make a considerable donation to A&T club funds in return for us supplying marshals

Date for your diary

The 2017 Annual awards night / Xmas Do is on Saturday 16th December.

AGM Sunday 29th January 2017 – by Mark Riches

My earlier post HERE refers

I won’t be able to attend the AGM this year but know that Malc will do a great job as Chair

This is a great time to inject some ‘new blood’ and I think it’s time for a new Cross-country captain

I have carried out this role since its inception and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, I have been conspicuous by my absence at races the last 2 seasons and the Club really needs a Captain who can attend races!

Description of Role - To arrange club championships and enter competitions and races as appropriate. There is also the option to join the Committee, but you can carry out the role as non-committee if you prefer. I will be happy to help the new person ‘find their feet’

If you are interested in this exciting role, please let me know as soon as possible (m) 07508213207

Townley Park Burnley XC

After a week of mixed weather the conditions were perfect for the first XC fixture of 2017 at Townley Park, Burnley.   There were no A&T ladies, however 8 of our men turned out all fighting for end of season points.
It was a very muddy 9k course but Tim once again made it look easy finishing in 36.37.  Tim admitted he hadn't been taking running very serious lately and has promised to do more training this year!
Neil Hughes 39.39, Simon Ford 40.41 and Dave Sloan 41.08 were next with Gareth Jones 43.29 just pipping Gary Stevens 43.29, followed by Mark Collins 44.49 and an ever improving Phil Spencer-Grey 45.45.

Fell Champs

It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for . . . the A&T Fell Championships fixture list for 2017!  Per my earlier blog, this year we have joined the Run the Moors area fell championship, so most of this year’s races are based around that fixture list.  This brings us a wider selection of races than in the previous couple of years and also adds that extra spice of competition against other clubs.  I have dropped only one RTM race from the A&T Champs, the reason being that it is on 19th March and so clashes with the Gin Pit Half.

Rules are similar to last year, with a couple of small additions.  Best 6 races count, with a minimum of 3 races to qualify for prizes.  There is an extra bonus point for every race you complete over the 5.  There will also be 1 additional bonus point for any category M race that you complete and 2 bonus points for any category L race.  In the event of a tie, then I will backcount on the results, number of 1st places, 2nd places, etc.

It’s worth noting that there will definitely be kit requirements on some of these races and a couple of them will require navigation skills, however I will make sure that this is made clear in advance.  If in doubt, please ask me.

More information on the Run the Moors championship is at this link  There is also a facebook group that I’ll share.

More information on all of the races and kit requirements are to be found on the fell runners association website at this link

Fell Champs 2017 by Tim Campbell

I’m very pleased to announce that A&T applied for, and have been accepted in, the “Run the Moors” area fell championship for 2017.  Similar in concept to the CLGP, but for fell running, membership is currently made up of the following clubs: Horwich RMI, Middleton Harriers, Radcliffe AC, Rochdale Harriers, Rossendale Harriers, Royton RR and Saddleworth Runners.  Oh, and the plucky young upstarts at Astley & Tyldseley RR J

I will be publishing details of the A&T fell champs, to incorporate the RTM champs, this weekend, and I'm very much looking forward to a new season on the fells as part of a wider group.  If you haven’t tried a fell race before then think about adding one into your diaries for this year, you never know, you may just like it! Don't forget that if you’re unsure about fell running, then I’m always more than happy to advise on things like kit requirements, but it’s not complicated and for most races that we do it doesn’t require any special abilities such as navigation or spidey sense, just a plucky spirit (and possibly some waterproofs and a whistle!)
