Turkey Trot Update

Hi all,

The course for the Turkey Trot on Thursday 29th December will be an out and back 5k course on the guided bus way.  I did a recce of the course yesterday and it should be a fast one.

We will still meet at the Gin Pit club (around 9.45am) and do a group warm up to the bus lane.

Don't forget that everyone who takes part 'must' bring a prize for the presentation.

I will blog the handicaps on or around boxing day when i have the final entry list.

If you wish to take part please drop me a message on facebook or email

Cheers, Gary

Thanks for the nominations

Hi everyone, I feel I need to thank everybody who voted for me at this years awards especially as I was not there to receive them,

Unfortunately I could not be there on the night so when Lynn turned up at my house the next day I was shocked to find out what I had won,

I am very flattered to have received both awards, there have been some great achievements at the club this year, Dave Sloan 100 miler, and John lee and Chris scholes smashing there first ironman to name a few,

I am honoured and very grateful to receive achievement of the year and triathlete of the year but I would of felt a little embarrassed receiving them knowing how how hard the above Named people had worked for almost a year to acheive there goal,
So thanks to all who voted for me I really am grateful, sorry I couldn't be there.

Marls Pits XC by Gary Stevens

It was 'Super Saturday' which means 2 things, Marls Pits and the club Xmas do.
You either love it or hate it depending how sadistic you are, but either way it's the race you remember the most over the season.

First it was the ladies race. Jackie had another cracker to finish in 23.57, following by Sue 25.02 and Linda 26.39.  Kay was next in 31.36 followed by Clare 33.05, who was captured sitting in the mud through the woods.

In the mens race Tim had a superb race to finish 1st V40 in 31.09, followed Neil 34.29 and Simon 35.19.  Gareth Jones 37.48 just got the better of Mark Collins 38.08.  Dave (38.50) doing his first Marls Pits took a tumble on the hill but just got the better of Gary 39.19 and Scott 39.42.

Mike Carter doing his first ever XC described it as the 'hadest thing he had ever done' clocking 40.29 with Phil finishing well in 41.51.

If you have not been entered you can still enter on the day but, for Red Rose only, will have to go to registration and pay £6 to get a number

Liverpool XC by Gary Stevens

On a busy weekend of races just 8 A&T'ers made the journey to compete in the Liverpool XC at Sefton Park which incorporates the Great Britain European trials, meaning the quality was of a very high standard.  Foggy freezing conditions greeted us, which had a festive feeling to the race.
The first task of the day was trying to erect the tent which Simon and Neil completed in no time, along with the club flag.
Just before the ladies start, Sue and Linda did a Steve Coleman and turned up 5 minutes before the gun meaning they missed the start by a few seconds but managed to work their way through the field to complete the 8k, Sue clocking 37.09 and Linda 39.36.
Next it was the mens race.  In a field of almost 700 runners Tim was first club runner home in 36.25.  Neil 38.37 just pipped Simon 38.53 with Gary 43.01.  Scott 44.23 and Phil 46.17 both had good runs to complete the 10k muddy course.

Well done everyone.

Voting - A&T Presentation Night.

So far there have been only 26 people who have voted via the website out of a possible 90+ members for the special awards  Personally I think this is a poor showing, and I'm sure no member would like to receive an award that has been voted for by only a few members rather than the full club.
Please can I urge all those that have not cast their votes to do so before the closing date - Friday 27th November.  It only takes two minutes to complete.

A&T X-Country Saturday 12th November 2016 at Bolton – by Mark Riches

I finally made my 2016/17 debut on the country and as my daughter, Laura, was racing I got to Leverhulme Park well before the other A&T runners. Laura likes to do a long warm-up whereas I used the first mile of the race as a warm-up! We were without our flag & tent so I based myself with Leigh Harriers and hoped everyone would find me

The other A&T runners started to arrive about 20 minutes before the start of the ladies race and I agreed to speak to James about the tent; if he isn’t at the next race can he pass the tent and flag on to someone who is. Everyone arrived in good time except Gareth Jones & Mark Collins who turned up about 5 minutes before the start and Gareth didn’t even have his number!

The 4 A&T ladies set off to tackle the very challenging and muddy 5k course; each lap includes a couple of tough climbs and even a stream crossing. Jackie Price (25.19) was out in front again followed home by Rachel Haslam (29.48) Kerry Lomas (31.08) and Clare Unsworth (34.37) – well done ladies

Next it was the turn of the men; 10.2k this time. First A&T finisher, was Neil Hughes (43.49) who just got the better of Simon Ford (44.57) and Gareth Jones (45.45) who had another great run despite his late arrival. Gary Stevens (47.33) just got the better of Mark Collins (47.57) and Dave Sloan (48.02) Next it was yours truly (Mark Riches) in a time of 48.59. In my quest to complete 50 Park runs in 2016 I had ‘raced’ the Pennington Flash Park run earlier so decided to easy myself into this one but when a chap from Burnden asked me about 1 ½ mile in if I’d missed the start I decided to pick it up a bit! Scott Priestley (50.37) Kieran Lomas (52.53) and Phillip Spencer-Gray (53.25) completed the line-up – well done lads

Next race in the club champs is on Saturday 26st November at Sefton Park Liverpool – make a note in your diaries

We are a well established swimming club looking mainly at open water competitions.

We have mixed ability training sessions and encourage swimmers who may want to increase their fitness and train to schedules.

I can offer stroke technique sessions and fitness training to a pace clock to individuals who feel they can benefit from this.

Over the next three weeks we will be offering these sessions at a cost of £3 per session without having to pay any other membership.

Also at the end of November there is a 1500 metres club swim which will give all swimmers something to aim for.

I am an experienced open water swimmer winning the British Veterans Championship 13 times and still hold various open water records. I have a long experience of encouraging new swimmers and would look forward to spending time with new members.

LSV XC by Gary Stevens

Despite many members being in Palma or doing the Manchester Half there were still a good turn out of blue vest at Leigh for the first Red rose race of the season.
The conditions could not have been better, with warm sunshine and hardly any mud on the course, more like a trail race than a cross country.

Jackie Price led the ladies team home in the 5k 23.57 followed by Sue Fletcher 25.41, Linda Whittaker 26.24, Kerry Lomas 29.08 and Kay Campbell 31.30.

The men's race was 6.6 miles with Tim Campbell once again leading home the team in 40.14.  Simon Ford had a great race in 42.11, followed by Neil Hughes 44.13 and Gary Stevens 46.23.   Mark Collins made his first appearance in XC clocking 47.31 with Matt Thorpe 48.41 next still recovering from his GB Triathlon appearance in Mexico.  Scott Priestly 49.25 out sprinted Brendan Loughrey 49.26 and Kieron Lomas 49.31.  Chris Bennett 50.36 who thought it was 2 laps was next followed by Phil Spencer-Gray 54.47.

Once again thanks to everyone who came out to support us, your shouts were well received by all the runners.

Chorley XC by Gary Stevens

The XC season started this year at Astley Park, Chorley on a glorious afternoon, mild for the time of year.  Questions turned to spike length as the field was dry, but after a short debate 12mm was the call by most runners.
It was great to see some new faces turning out in the mud representing the club, and was good to see Alex Foster back in a blue vest, who is currently in a recovery period from another epic season of racing in the triathlon.
As ever we had great support around the course, Jon Hall and Cath Worsley standing at the top of the killer hill and Emma Stevens near the kids park, Thanks for your shouts!

In the ladies race Jackie was first finisher in 28.21, followed by Linda Whittaker 31.52, Kerry Lomas 33.42 and Tracey Loughrey 38.21.

In the mens Tim Campbell won the battle of the mud/fell lovers in 39.12, followed by Alex Foster 42.22, Neil Hughes (not currently on the results), Simon Ford 43.03, Gary Stevens 47.52, Keiron Lomas 48.44, Phil Riley 50.32, Scott Priestley 51.04 and Phil Spencer-Grey 51.28.

Unfortunately Brendan had to pull out on the last lap with injury.
