Swinton 10 Miler Race Report by Captain Barb

On a gorgeously sunny day 22 A&T vests made their way to the last race of the club champs - the Swinton 10 miler.  Improving on total number of club runners from 2014 but only 7 had ran the same race in 2014 making it the first time for quite a few and for me, I hadnt ran since 2013 and with no long runs in the bank was pretty much dreading it!

If the prospect of running 10 miles wasnt bad enough, 9 of us still had Astley Park cross country in our legs from the day before (Mark, James, Jon, Jackie, Louise, Sue, Clare, Bev and me) and later I learned that Tracey had ran 13 miles with Joan the day before - double hardcore points for us all!! #gohardorgohome

The race got off to a prompt start with a total of 209 runners taking to the roads on a course that takes runners through Monton, Eccles and Swinton with wonderful views of various pubs and people enjoying cold beverages in the sunshine as we looked on longingly. ..As hard as I tried I found that trying to maintain the look of a 'real' athlete whilst running past bewildered looking people at bus stops became increasingly difficult, nay impossible, especially by the second loop as I gasped for breath going up Eccles New Road with the prospect of the mile long uphill drag of Lancaster road ahead.

The marshalls and supporters along the route were wonderful, and it was especially lovely to see Ian Newcome and Mikey G on the course (both currently injured) giving support and encouragement to everyone.

Results showed some great performances with Tim coming in first over the line for A&T in a sub 60 performance of 59:55 compared with 1:02:05 in 2014, this performance also won Turbo Tim 1st V40 prize - well done Tim!

2nd was Mark Riches in 1:06:14 and  3rd was Chris Bennett in 1:09:07 making up our top 3 men - well done boys!!

1st A&T lady was Josie in 1:09:04 who finished 2nd lady overall. Next over the line for A&T ladies was Jackie in 1.12.46 and Sue in 1.15.03 (with post XC legs) also earning them 1st and 2nd L35 prizes and making up our top 3 ladies who were also 3rd placed team next to very strong teams pitched by Royton Road Runners and Burnden Road Runners. Well done ladies - awesome performances from the three of you all season.

Other notable performances during the race include Louise who took a tumble and cut her hand and arm at mile 4. After composing herself she continued like a trooper and finished in 1:23:00
James also running really well this year and with XC still in his legs only narrowly missed improving on his 2014 time.. I also really liked the number pattern so I have to mention that he ran 1.16.16 compared to 1.15.15 last year... so next year I'm looking for 1.14.14 please James :)

Baconmon was a bit billious from what I read on facebook after a Saturday night session but romped home in 1.24.20 compared to 1.41.58 last year - a whopping 17 minutes off last year so either he had a great race this time or a shocking one last year?

Another PB recorded by The Baron.... Zzzzzzzzzzzz  oh you're becoming so predictable Paul! Only joking, fantastic yet again!! And great running too from Scott, Stu,Brendan, Jon, Rachel and Nic.

Vanessa was nervous at the beginning of the race after a couple of weeks holidaying in the sun not thinking too much about running. We were both struggling towards the end of the race but Vanessa finished in a very respectable 1.32.34 only narrowly outside last year's time of 1.32.23 - well done Nessa, not as bad as you thought!

Tracey, as mentioned earlier steadily made her way around the course finishing in 1.35.52 following a 13 mile run the day before - I salute you Mrs Loughrey :D :D

And last but never least our Clare came in at 1.38.38 a massive 8 minutes and 36 seconds faster than her 2014 run - fantastic performance and again with heavy XC legs.

Amidst all the wonderful performances I have struggled to find my runner of the day and so I've decided I am going to split the award between two runners who didnt win any official prizes on the day but I feel deserve some recognition - sharing the love A&T style.

Firstly Louise Simpson... reason being that in 2014 she was poorly (possibly self induced but we wont go there) and although tried, never managed to start the race and this year fell and injured herself but continued. So in a bid to override any negative memories of Swinton 10 with a positive one, will a bottle of wine help?

Secondly, a newcomer to this race Brendan Loughrey ran a blinder of a race finishing in 1.11.23, 4th A&T man over the line, surpassing even his own personal time goal he had set himself - well done Brendan, great performance - you're running really well!

I'm sure this race will feature again on next year's club champs (hopefully not straight after XC), well done to everyone who raced, a great turn out for the last race and congratulations to every one of the 209 runners, from the sub60 heroes to the post 2 hour troopers... every one is a winner... here's to 2016!

With thanks to everyone who supported club races in 2015 this is your captain, signing off...

A&T X-country Saturday 26th September 2015 at Chorley – by Mark Riches

A magnificent 15 A&T runners turned up at a sunny Astley Park and Chris Bennett had already put the tent up when I arrived later than anticipated as I had underestimated the walk from the car park. I collected the numbers and Chris distributed them while I entered Barb White & Bev Tickle who had missed the pre-entry

It was soon time for the ladies, pictured above, to tackle 2 large laps (6.2k) which included a lot of mud & 2 stream crossings per lap. Jackie Price led the way with a great run finishing 13th in a time of 28.08 followed by Suzanne Gregory (28.52) and Sue Fletcher (29.18) These 3 made up the team that finished 1st over 35 team and 4th overall ladies team, which is a terrific achievement. Next to finish was Louise Simpson (29.18) Barb (35.04) Michelle Fairclough (36.02) and Bev (36.22) with Clare Unsworth (39.10) completing the line-up – well done ladies

Next it was the turn of the men; 1 x small lap plus 3 x large laps (9.9k) this time. We had 2 men making their debut on the country Keiran Lomas & Rob Foster and they both seemed to ‘enjoy' it so I am sure we will see them at the next race. First A&T finisher was yours truly (Mark Riches) in a time of 45.42; you don’t hear that very often! Next it was Gary Stevens (46.53) followed by the first of our debutants, Keiron, who had a great run finishing in a time of 48.26 just holding off James Bentall (48.59) Next it was Jon Hall (51.20) and Mark Lysycia (53.54) with second debutant, Rob, completing the line-up in a time of 59.38 – well done lads

After James kindly agreed to ‘look after’ the tent & flag, I did my warm-down during the long trek back to my car

Next race in the club champs is on Saturday 10th October at LSV – make a note in your diaries

Race report; Blackleach 5 – by guest reporter Mark Riches

Barb couldn’t make this one due to work commitments so I agreed to write the race report; Barb will announce runner of the day in due course

After the rain on Saturday, we were treated to a lovely sunny Sunday and 21 A&T runners made the short trip to Blackleach Country Park to tackle this 5 mile trail race hosted by Manchester YMCA Harriers

I arrived over an hour before the start, caught the tail-end of the marshal’s briefing (there were a lot of them!) and then, much to my surprise, met Simon Ford at registration. Apparently he “couldn’t sleep” this could have something to do with running a very hilly 15 miles the day before helping someone attempt the Bob Graham round

A few more A&T runners arrived and before a 10 minute warm-up accompanied by one of Ian Joslin’s dogs, Bacon-mon (Ian Hamilton) told us how he had not been out on the beer on Saturday night but only because he had fallen asleep and didn’t wake up until 22:45!

The race (2 x 2 ½ mile loops on paths all within the confines of the park) started at 10:00. First A&T finisher (again) in a magnificent 12th place was Tim Campbell (30:45) followed by Simon Ford (32:25) and Mark Riches (33:10)

Josie Maley continuing her rich vein of form, was first A&T lady and 2nd lady overall in a time of 34:45 followed by Jackie Price (36:10) and Suzanne Gregory (37:17)

Full results can be found
HERE well done everyone

Finally, must mention Brendan Loughrey who despite celebrating his birthday (see above) had a great run finishing in a time of 34:32

Next road race is Swinton 10 on 27 September (the day after the first x-country race of the 2015/16 season!)

Intermediate running group for members

Following on from the recent success of the beginners group we are now pleased to announce that an Intermediate group will now be formed as a progression for new members (but is of course open to ALL members).

Intermediate group is an ideal way to build on the great start that our beginners have made and will focus on building fitness and stamina for 5k-5 miles distance.

The sessions will be on the Trails at Leigh Sports Village and start at 6.30pm (same time as beginners).
Sessions will be coached by Jon Hall supported by James Bentall.
Again there may be occasions when we call on the support of experienced runners to help with both the new groups.

If anyone is interested in coming along the first session will be on Monday 14th September, meeting in the car park at LSV.
Please contact Barbs, James or Jon to let us know that you will be coming or if you have any questions.

Thanks
Barbs

Interclub Challenge, 1 week today, 16th September

Dont forget its Interclub next week - big thankyou to everyone who has volunteered so far, we now have plenty of runners but if you still want to be involved no one will be turned away.

Unfortunately, now I'm having to work away next week so the dream team of James & Jon will be running the show... sorting out teams and allocating roles to the marhsalls and time keepers.

If you have a preference of what you'd like to do please let them know.

So far we need

* Race Starter (someone with a big gob? any ideas?)
* Results - The Baron
* 3 x time keepers ( or 6, you can do this in pairs its easier if one has the watch shouting numbers and partner to record the time on the clip board)
* Marshalls dotted along the course.

Jon and James will set up the course and are also running so may be a bit stressed out so be kind. :D

Pasties will be delivered around 7.45pm and any donations of cakes and biscuits are appreciated.  (James, bring a tupperware box to put on the table for collecting money. There is no set price for food just voluntary donations)

So if you have any questions about rules please see previous blogs. And for anything else please contact James and Jon direct.
Many thanks and good luck.. I am expecting to see our trophy back when I return :D :D

Names so far...
