Bolton X-country 22/11/14 - by Mark Riches

18 A&T runners (7 ladies & 11 men) turned up for this fixture and the first to arrive, after missing the start last time, was Lewis Eccleston. We (well Lewis & James Bentall) made short work of putting up the tent and (for once) everyone turned up in plenty of time for the start of their respective races. Just before the start of the ladies race and less than one hour before he was due to race, Lewis was seen eating a burger; apparently he was hungry due to the fact that he had already completed a swimming session before cycling to the race. Also Ian (bacon Mon) Hamilton had replaced his trail shoes with a brand new pair of spikes so he was hoping not to run like ‘Scooby do on ice’ this time

The ladies course consisted of 1 x medium lap plus 1 x large lap (5K) and Suzanne Gregory (25.02) was the first A&T finisher (again) pursued by Jackie Price (25:35) and Susan Fletcher (26.50) Louise Simpson (27.10) and Kim O’Neill (27.26) were next followed by our only non-vet, Claire Matchwick (28.02) with Clare Unsworth (35.11) completing the line-up – well done ladies

Next it was the turn of the men; 3 x large laps (10K) this time. The burger didn’t seem to have affected Lewis’ performance as he finished 6th in a time of 36.58 (first A&T runner by over 4 minutes!) Next A&T finisher was Tim Campbell (41.00) followed by Graham Rands who started off steady before passing yours truly (Mark Riches) at the end of the first lap then setting off after Neil Hughes; he (Graham) just got the better of him 42.12 to 42.31. I was next A&T finisher in 43.07 followed by Jon Hyde (45.55) who was trying to conserve some energy for the swimming session straight after the race! Coach Shaun Moran was next in 46.30 followed by Tony Foster (49.38) and James (49.44) Paul (the Baron) Basnett (56.00) got the better of bacon Mon (57.15) again despite Ian’s new spikes – well done lads

James had kindly agreed to take the tent home as I had to leave straight away as I was working but I found out later that Ian had let rip a couple of times while getting changed in the tent much to the amusement of Suzanne who tried to zip the tent flap up to prevent Shaun and a couple of others escaping! Finally, I achieved a ‘first’ on the way home when I overtook Lewis; he was on a bike and I was in a car but I still overtook him!

Next race Saturday 29/11/14 at Liverpool – see you there

Chorley X-Country by Mark Riches

17 A&T runners (6 ladies & 11 men) made the start line but only 16 finished as Chris Bennett decided that he would cut his race short to ensure that he got to work on time!  Dave Crowe made short work of putting up the tent and before long it was time for the ladies to tackle this very challenging (2 x water crossing plus one very big hill on each lap) muddy course

The ladies route consisted of 1 x medium lap plus 1 x large lap (4.6K) and Suzanne Gregory (22.06) was the first A&T finisher, despite going over on her ankle early on in the race, but she was pushed all the way by Susan Fletcher (22.19). Next to finish was Claire Matchwick (23.42) followed in close succession by Louise Simpson (24.08) and Kim O’Neill (24.23) with Clare Unsworth (29.22) completing the line-up – well done ladies

Next it was the turn of the men; 1 x small lap plus 3 x large laps (9.9K) this time. Most of you will remember Josie’s late arrival at Hynburn a couple of weeks ago but Lewis Eccleston took late arrival to a new level on Saturday.  The first I knew of his arrival was when he barged past me Jon Hyde & Graham Rands on the first lap; luckily Susanne  managed to find his number in my bag but he still gave the rest of the field at least a minute start! Despite this he was first A&T finisher (11th overall) in 38.18. Next A&T finisher, despite drinking until the early hours the night before, was Tim Campbell (41.14) followed by Neil Hughes, who had the run of the day, finishing in 41.52. Yours truly (Mark Riches) Jon and Graham ran the first couple of laps together before Graham (42.17) pulled away leaving me and Jon to battle it out. I managed to take the lead towards the end of the 3rd lap only for Jon to go passed me again but I took the lead again on the last lap and was able to hang on to finish in 43.27 with Jon finishing in 43.53. Next was Shaun Moran (47.32) followed by James Bentall (50.59) and Craig Bradbury (53.29) Paul (the Baron) Basnett (57.14) got the better of Ian (bacon Mon) Hamilton (59.09) with Ian blaming his new shoes but more of this later – well done lads

We did a lap of the football field then went back to the tent for biscuits (thanks Suzanne) and warm Vimto (thanks Louise) Meanwhile bacon Mon was trying to sell his new trail shoes to everyone in the tent because they made him run like 'Scooby do on ice' (his words) He was actually standing in his underpants ranting about his shoes to everyone and some of our lady members may well be scared for life!

Next race Saturday 22/11/14 at Bolton – see you there!

A&T x-country - by Mark Riches

The third race in this year’s x-country champs is this Saturday (8 Nov) at Chorley

I got this message about parking from the organiser - "Can I ask everyone to please park in Chorley town centre not at Astley Village . The use of this venue will be in doubt if the Astley Village car park is used following complaints last year, and the council will be watching this year. Parking for officials and TENT CARRIERS ONLY, please do not abuse this, will be at the primary school, as per last year St Laurences Highfield Road Chorley PR7 1RB. Athletes are requested to park in Chorley Town Centre at Queens Road car park, PR7 1JX and at Flat Iron car park PR7 1AY. It is at least a 15 minute walk to the start from these car parks. I will be taking new entries at the cafe, near start and finish, as per last year."
This is a Red Rose race and I have entered those people who raced on the country last year plus anyone who didn’t race last year but asked to be entered. Please wear the number you wore at LSV or come & find me on Saturday, just look for the A&T flag, and I will give you your number (in exchange for £5!) which you should wear at all Red Rose races

If you have not been entered you can still enter on the day but, for Red Rose only, will have to go to registration and pay £6 to get a number

Start times - ladies 1:35 pm & men 2:15 pm
