A&T X-country LSV Saturday 11/10/14 – by Mark Riches
A good turnout of 20 A&T runners descended on LSV. The sun was shining and it was very warm, although it had rained quite a lot so we were expecting the course to be muddy
First off to tackle the first x-country of the season were the 7 A&T ladies. Jackie Price and Suzanne Gregory were given the same time 24:39 but Jackie got the nod. I am looking forward to watching these two battle it out over the remaining fixtures. Next home was Susan Fletcher (26:04) followed by Claire Matchwick (26:41) who was making her debut on the country. Louise Sempon (Simpson) was next with a time of 27:11: I will get this corrected before the next race, with Clare Unsworth (31:46) and Abbie Eckersley (31:53) completing the line-up – well done ladies
Next it was the turn of the 15 A&T men; 3 x large laps (10K) this time. Tim Campbell shot off as usual and was first A&T finisher in 41:24. He was pursued by Simon Ford, Jon Hyde, Neil Hughes and Dave Sloan with yours truly (Mark Riches) beginning to think that I had misread the course and we were only racing 5K! The first lap passed and I could see that Simon had broken away from the pack and by the end of the second lap Dave had dropped back but was still ahead of me. I passed Dave soon after the start of the third and final lap and set off after the others. I caught them and went passed just as we approached the golf course and set off after Simon who was just too strong for me (again) and he finished in a time of 42:48 to my 42:55. Jon (43:10) just got the better of Neil (43:13) with Dave finishing in a time of 44:39. Gary Stevens (46:21) Chris Bennett (49:54) and Craig Bradbury (50:22) were next followed by GP5 race director James Bentall (50:33) and Tony Foster (53:47) Ian ‘bacon-mon’ Hamilton (59:14) got the better of Paul ‘the baron’ Basnett (60:48) despite a spectacular fall on the bridge which looked like he decided to do a couple of press-ups mid race – well done lads
After the traditional A&T handshakes we did a quick warm down and then we made the short journey home
Next race Saturday 25/10/14 at Hyndburn – put it in your diary!
