A&T X-country Hyndburn 25/10/14 – by Mark Riches

Only 7 A&T runners made the trip to Hyndburn for the second race of the season and Jackie Price, who was there before I arrived, was very nearly the only female competitor. You guessed it, Josie Maley was the other female competitor and she arrived just 3 minutes before the race started. Her warm-up was a jog to the start while fastening her number to her vest!
Despite the above, Josie had a great run completing the challenging 6K course in a time of 27:36 followed by Jackie just over 2 minutes later in 29:47 - well done ladies
Next it was the turn of the 5 A&T men; 1 x small lap plus 2 x large laps (10K) this time. In was great to see Lewis Eccleston racing for the club again after his breakthrough triathlon season. Not surprisingly he was first A&T finisher in 37:31. Next A&T finisher was Graham Rands (41:57) who set off quite conservatively passing yours truly (Mark Riches) on the first lap before hunting down the fast starting Neil Hughes (42:37) I finished just over a minute behind Neil in a time of 43:42 with James Bentall (49:13) completing the line-up  - well done lads
My warm-down consisted of a jog back to the car as I was working at the P4U Arena at 5 pm
Next race Saturday 08/11/14 at Chorley – see you there!

A&T athlete to feature on the One Show

I've just had a phone call from a local film maker who said he's made a short film about Hendersons End Fell Race, which will be shown on BBC1's The One Show - Friday 17th October at 7pm.

There is at least one A&T runner on the film, described as "blonde hair, a good runner, seen often on the fells, around 40 years old"

Tune in to see who it is ..

X Country LSV 11/1014 by Mark Riches

A&T X-country LSV Saturday 11/10/14 – by Mark Riches

A good turnout of 20 A&T runners descended on LSV. The sun was shining and it was very warm, although it had rained quite a lot so we were expecting the course to be muddy

First off to tackle the first x-country of the season were the 7 A&T ladies. Jackie Price and Suzanne Gregory were given the same time 24:39 but Jackie got the nod. I am looking forward to watching these two battle it out over the remaining fixtures. Next home was Susan Fletcher (26:04) followed by Claire Matchwick (26:41) who was making her debut on the country. Louise Sempon (Simpson) was next with a time of 27:11: I will get this corrected before the next race, with Clare Unsworth (31:46) and Abbie Eckersley (31:53) completing the line-up – well done ladies
Next it was the turn of the 15 A&T men; 3 x large laps (10K) this time. Tim Campbell shot off as usual and was first A&T finisher in 41:24. He was pursued by Simon Ford, Jon Hyde, Neil Hughes and Dave Sloan with yours truly (Mark Riches) beginning to think that I had misread the course and we were only racing 5K! The first lap passed and I could see that Simon had broken away from the pack and by the end of the second lap Dave had dropped back but was still ahead of me. I passed Dave soon after the start of the third and final lap and set off after the others. I caught them and went passed just as we approached the golf course and set off after Simon who was just too strong for me (again) and he finished in a time of 42:48 to my 42:55. Jon (43:10) just got the better of Neil (43:13) with Dave finishing in a time of 44:39. Gary Stevens (46:21) Chris Bennett (49:54) and Craig Bradbury (50:22) were next followed by GP5 race director James Bentall (50:33) and Tony Foster (53:47) Ian ‘bacon-mon’ Hamilton (59:14) got the better of Paul ‘the baron’ Basnett (60:48) despite a spectacular fall on the bridge which looked like he decided to do a couple of press-ups mid race – well done lads

After the traditional A&T handshakes we did a quick warm down and then we made the short journey home

Next race Saturday 25/10/14 at Hyndburn – put it in your diary!

The East Lancs rats are back!

From tomorrow (Wednesday) we are back on the Lancs. You can meet us at the Gin Pit 6.30pm prompt for the 1.5 mile warm up to the Lancs or at 6.45pm at Higher Green on the Lancs.
Great sessions for all abilities.

Turkey Trot Double Trouble - Sunday 28th December

AM - The Race!

I have volunteered to help organise the Turkey Trot on Sunday 28th December.  This year we are doing approx 6 miles, but will incorporate 3 x 2 mile loops to make it easier 'not to get lost' and also make it more fun for the spectators who want to watch the race.

This is done on a handicap basis with the slowest runner off first and the fastest runner off last, so anyone has a chance of winning.

Fancy dress is encouraged as it adds to the fun of the event.

Anyone can take part, only condition is you bring something for the prize fund which can be a bottle, chocolates/unwanted xmas gift etc.  Whoever wins the event gets first pick of the prizes, 2nd gets second pick etc etc.

Normally this event is very popular, if you would like to take part please email me or facebook me.

I would like everyone there for 9.30am, with the first runner starting at 10am.

PM - The Drink!

Later we are meeting at the Thomas Burke in Leigh 7pm for a few (okay a lot!) drinks in Leigh's finest drinking establishments.

Everyone welcome.

Could you be a Health Champion for A&T?

Grant application for A&T

The committee are currently considering applying for £1800 worth of funding available from Wigan Council.
The proposal will be put together in November/December for panel approval in January as suggested by Dave Sloan in the last club meeting.
As part of our commitment to promoting Health and Wellbeing in the community, as a club we have to have 'Health Champions' and training is available to support this. At least 2 Health champions are needed for the club and this is an essential element of the funding criteria.

We have been advised the next training course is 27th November, 9am - 4.30pm at the Wigan Life Centre.

If anyone is genuinely interested in taking on this valuable role and is available to attend either the above date or future dates, please contact Barb.  Should we be unable to attract volunteers to these positions this will inform our decision as to whether or not we proceed with the application.
(Apologies for the short notice too)

More information on the potential funding and Health champion role is available via the links below.

Swinton 10 Miler by Captain Wiggins

Swinton 10 Mile Race Report

Not a bad turn out of Blue A&T Vests turned out to the final CLGP of the season.  20 runners made the start line, the exact amount that turned out at last years, infamous “Swinton 10 Miler”.
The well known route for many of the runners, was well marshalled and consists of 2 large loops starting out across the A580 down onto Folly lane and back up Lancaster Road.
The morning was nice and dry and seemed like perfect running conditions but as the morning progressed the humidity made the long distance seem even longer.
First three A&T men back were Tim Campbell in 1:02:05 with Shaun Moran who was 1st in his category and hot on Tim’s heels in 1:02:07 and Mark Riches 3rd in his category in 1:02:23 brilliant running lads!
Dave Sloan and Gary Stevens also almost hand in hand finishing 1:05:55 and 1:05:56 respectively with Graham Rands under a minute later in 1:06:46 well done (great to have you racing with us again Graham).
Ian Newcombe consistently putting it in with another 1:08:52 same time as last year, with picture perfect Chris Scholes next over the finish in 1:10:43 well done lads.
Craig Badbury had a blinding race and battled hard in the humidity finishing the race looking more like he’d been for a swim but knocking an amazing 7 minutes off last years time with a finish time 1:12:32 , his brilliant effort makes him our runner of the day -  Huge well done Craig, bottle of vino on its way.
First lady home was our lovely Suzanne Gregory 1:14:47 well done Soozy! With James Bentall coming in just behind in 1:15:15 – great work as he had the mother of all blisters – ouch!  2nd lady and finishing 3rd in her category was Carole Baines finishing in 1:17:01 well done Carole.
Paul improving Basnett was next to complete the loops in 1:25:21, With Claire Matchwick closely following finished in 1:26:17.
Next came Jane Eccleston who had another cracking run finishing in 1:27:44, with Ian Samson Bushrod chasing her down crossing in at 1:28:02.  Following Ian was Vanessa Thompson who was glad to see the finish as a spot chocolate prize was waiting , completed in 1:32:23 well done Vanessa.
Ian Hamilton completing the men’s line up finished in 1:41:58 good work Ian, with our bird Clare Unsworth completing the loops and 1 mile more than required, following a knock to the head by a dead pigeon, I think this may have caused some confusion with left and right powers of turning,  however still a fab time of 1:47:14 achieved.  Well done Clare!
Finally a brief mention for Chris Bennett who ran the first 5 mile but needed to pull out due to injury so reverted to much appreciated cheer leader for our hardy troops!
Well done Team, a great finale to the road champs. Big thanks from your road captains for supporting the club races, the final results will be published early November after the final park runs have been submitted.
