Gin Pit Marathon and Half Marathon 22nd & 23th March 2014

Hi everyone, as I think most of you know I’m putting together the Gin Pit double marathon and half marathon. Thanks to those who have offered to help so far. The plans are coming together nicely.
I am looking for volunteers to help with the following roles:-
Help with registration each day at the Welfare club to register runners and hand out running numbers.
Time keepers for the marathon each day, based at the Welfare Club, finishers will be coming in from 1pm so could with the time keeper being ready to take times from 12:30pm, I’ll be happy to take lover this role after I finish the race at about 1:30pm to 2pm.
For the half marathon on the Sunday a time keeper needs to be based at the Marsland Green Bridge on the canal in Astley between 11:15am and 1:15pm to time finishers and check everyone in the half is accounted for.
Marshals for Check point 1, on the canal in Monton between 10:45am & 12 Noon.

Marshals for check point 2, & the half marathon finish (on the Sunday) at Marsland Green Bridge on the canal in Astley, between 11:15am to 1:15pm.
Marshals for Check point 3, on the canal in Platt Bridge between 12:10pm to 2:45pm.

Marshals for Check point 4, in Hindley Green/West Leigh, between 12:30pm to 3:15pm.

The role of the marshals at the check points is to check off the runners as the pass and ring through to the race director to confirm when everyone has passed. Also make water and sweets available for them and collect up any rubbish. This job is easier than you might expect as the runners will be well spread out and not in a rush like in shorter races, you might even have a few stop for a chat!
A Marshal for Astley Hospital between 10:10am & 10:45am. To guide runners from Manchester Road onto Church Road.
A Marshal for Mosley Common, between 10:15am & 11am.
A Marshal to cover a spot on Ellenbrook Road between 10:30am & 11:15am where the runners turn onto the trails towards Worsley. This spot is not far from the Red Lion pub.
I do have some offers of help for the kitchen where we will be selling pasties and hot drinks but if you feel you would like to help any time between 1pm & 3pm Saturday and Noon and 3pm on Sunday more help would be welcome. They say “Many hands make light work”. Even if you are only able to spare an hour or so, it will be appreciated.
Lastly I would like to have I more helper at the finish on the Saturday & Sunday to help give out water and finisher’s medals, between 1pm & 3pm.
If you can help with any of these please contact me either on Facebook,
Tel 07739 393 393 or email: malc26.2@gmail.com
For anyone interested in helping please contact me and I will be able to give you more information about what is involved in each role.
If you aren’t running please try and volunteer to help your club as the money made from the half is going towards the running of the club and keeping our subs as low as possible. All helpers will get an entry into the hat at the Christmas presentation to win free membership for next year.
Money from the marathon is going to my chosen charity the Brathay Trust who work with disadvantaged young people helping them make the most of their lives and keeping them away from offending. They also run a centre called Lowbank Ground in Coniston owned by Wigan Council where many children from the local area take part in outdoor courses from school.
You are all welcome at the Gin Pit to watch the start of the races 10:00am each day (10:15am for the Half on the Sunday) or watch the runners finish which will be from 1pm onwards. On the Sunday the half marathon finishes down on the canal at Marsland Green Bridge in Astley, this might be a good viewing point to cheer friends as they finish the half. Please bring your cameras and let’s see some great pictures.
Thanks
Malc

My 2013 by John Morton

The Big Bang! By John Morton

2013 as been a busy year for me it was a start of a new beginning studying Mental Health something I have never been involved before the course started in March 2013, additionally the Army as changed from being the TA to the Reserves so that is more commitment from there too, which amounts to a 70 hour week. :(

That said I did achieve most goals and I did support the club both as an official and a race member. I will always try and support the club where I can. I think this is important of being a club member.

But now I am laughing, I did learn a few things over the year about running promising myself I would never do a training programme and you think I would have learn because again I am going to do the same this year, which is stupid really because I gained a terrible injury in late summer and I have just started to run again in January even though I have tried a few small runs in between.

So what did I achieve, I did the Manchester Marathon (my first Marathon) in 3 hours and 48 Minutes with a 26 Miles a week training mainly, I was losing too much weight and didn't like looking thin, so I cut the miles down and accepted I would just aim for 4 hours to 3 hours 45 mins which I achieved.

I ran a few cross countries events and now purchased a couple of spike running shoes. Wow I have to say at one race I was never on my feet for more than 5 minutes, I was really ready to throw in the towel in, with my bottom lip out.

I also did a fell run something I did not plan for (always had a fear of them), but totally enjoyed it and had a good run too. Came in at a reasonable time.

I also did a park run at Pennington Flash 21:46 which isn't a bad time for that course. But the best run I thought I had was the Horwich 5 mile considering the hilly route, I was shocked to get a
a 34:54 I was thinking I would gain a time of around 38 mins.

I was also pleased with my two Half Marathons to achieving 1:38 at Blackpool and could have gone faster and also Freckleton which I did my best there with the heat and a tough route.

So over all a mixed year on the running routes but all still enjoyable, I have certainly missed seeing the club members and  you will see more of me in the near future around Feb time once I have settled into my insoles.

Yep I have started to use sport science now and I will be a little more careful, but hey running is fun and relaxing for me, I will never be a running athlete at this age.

So what would I like to achieve this year. Well firstly not to get injured and be realistic  the times I would get with the right training.

So here goes I would like to achieve breaking the 21 Minutes on a Parkrun.

10k in under 44 Minutes

Half Marathon 1 hour 35 Minutes

If I do another Marathon this year around October time then break the 3 hour 30 mark.

A introduction to a Triathlon at some point maybe the Southwell one in May.

Lastly and more importantly to do as many club runs as possible when I can at all the events.

That is my 2014 plan, simple but pleasurable.

Kind Regards

John Paul Morton

Charity Night - Saturday 8th March

I am running the London Marathon for Help the Hospice and I'm holding a charity night to raise funds. My father in law John unfortunately lost his battle against cancer in May 2013 and he's my inspiration behind this event as the hospice was an amazing support for all the family.
The event will take part at the Botanical Gardens, Atheton.  There will be an auction, raffle, stand up bingo, karaoke, disco, live music, lots of exciting prizes and lots, lots more. £5.00 a ticket and your supper will be included.

Tickets to be purchased before the night

If you would like a ticket please message me on facebook or email me on tracy@mteaser.wanadoo.co.uk or ring me 07890052420
