Congratulations to Lin Whittaker for winning her age group at the Leeds Express Tri on Sunday! Well done to Chris Whittaker too on what I believe was a very hilly course...meanwhile over in Stafford, Alex stormed home in 2nd place at the Blithfield Tri and bagged his age group prize too!
Well done everyone!

Sizzling Performances at Sale!!
In near perfect conditions for racing a number of A&T members ran PB's and won prizes tonight in the highly competitive 2nd of the Sale Sizzler series.
First home was Paul Mannion winning the V40 prize 16.09, closely followed by Lewis Eccleston in a superb time of 16.15 PB. Next in was myself (Gary Stevens) getting my 3rd PB in 2 weeks 17.43 with Robin Chan crossing the line in delight in a sub 19 performance, 18.47 PB. John Lee getting back into racing got an impressive 19.04 with Arnold Melling winning the V65 prize 19.16
Steve Foster 21.01 just pipped Jean Mann 21.17 who is making great progress back to form. Ray Taylor was also delighted with his sub 22 performance, clocking 21.57.
It was also great to see ex-member Troy Topping back in a A&T vest, albeit inside out! showing he is not far off his best clocking 18.38. Garry Baines take note and Troy, get yourself signed up

One Bolton 5k by Gary Stevens
On Sunday 8th July i travelled to the Reebok Stadium to compete in the 'One Bolton 5k' .. a race i did last year which celebrates the diversity of Bolton.
It certainly lived up to its billing as there were a mixtures of elite runners, club runners, recreational runners, gym goers, reasonably fit looking people, joggers, power walkers and walkers. .
The race itself started and finished at the Reebok Arena running track and took in some local trails which were pretty wet from all the recent rain.
During the race itself i tried to stick with Sean McMyler of Horwich who i know is coming back to form.
Sean was very encouraging and helped me a lot during the race but proved too strong and pulled away after 2k. I managed to keep him within a few seconds and worked off him as we passed runners around the trails. At the 4k marker Dave Jackson was there to offer words of encouragement and that give me a lift to grit my teeth for the final km. Sean pulled away a little as we turned on the track for the final 300 mtrs but i managed to hold my form to finish 7th with an official time of 17 Min's 58, my first even sub 18 5k run.
Tarus Elly won the race in 15 Min's 34 with Sean in 5th 17.45. Maria Lowe was first lady clocking 18 Min's 57.
Roll on Sale next Thursday for another lung buster, which if all goes to plan could bring a better time, and if not I've got the consolation of flying to Ibiza at 6am the following morning ;-)

South Lakes Half Marathon by Steve Coleman
On Sunday I did the South Lakes half marathon, this was a very hard run
with lots of sharp hills, one downhill which was on uneven ground and we
were warned that it was a risk to go down too fast. Warm weather and
not much wind meant I was soon sweating! For a change I got there at the
last minute and was in luck being able park right near the start. If I
had used the car park I would have missed the start. Came first for age
group and got a prize of £10!
Sun 22 July - come and support our A & T Ironmen!
On Sunday 22 July 5 of our members will be taking part in Ironman UK. The race starts at Pennington Flash at 6am, followed by a 112 mile bike ride around Horwich/Rivington area moving onto a marathon route in and around Bolton. The finish is at Bolton Town Hall.
For those who haven't been before, the whole event is fantastic to watch and despite lots of roads being closed it is surprisingly easy to move around the course. Lots of people cycled around the course last year which was is the easiest way to get about but Alix and I drove and didn't have any problems with parking or access.
It would be great to get a good turn out of A&T support for Terry, Neil, Anthony, Mike and Dan. We are suggesting that A&T ers wear their club colours to spectate in so the lads will be able to spot us through their sweat and tears!
I'm going on holiday next week and won't be back until late on Saturday night. However, in my absence, Dale, Kim and Alex will be around to answer any queries about the route and times and where people can gather for a good spectating position. So any questions, fire them towards those 3!
13 days to go boys...don't fall off, drown, trip up, kiss anyone with a cold....
:)
A & T ON TOUR - send us your photos!
It's summertime folks! (honestly, it really is July!!)
Let's have some new photos for our A&T on tour album. Thinking of making a display of them for our xmas do to cheer us all up when it's snowing. So pack your vests/tshirts and hoodies and whether you're going to Rhyll or Rio - post us a pic!
(post it to our club facebook page or email me claroj@hotmail.com)

Chester Deva Olympic Distance Triathlon – 1st July 2012
Chester Deva Olympic Distance Triathlon – 1st July 2012
Written by Dale Kenyon
Written by Dale Kenyon
Sunday 1st
July saw the Chester Deva Olympic Distance Triathlon and World
Qualifier take place. The event was also the North West Standard
Distance Championship so a strong field was expected and 587 triathletes
were there for an early 8am start to take on the 1500m swim, 40km bike
and 10km run. Six of the A&T tri section entered the event with Mike
Reason, Paul Jackson, Chris Whittaker, Linda Whittaker, Helen Minshall
and myself (Dale) taking part. Terry Hughes son Elliot and Paul
Jackson's brother were also competing.
After
the erratic weather of late, we were relieved to wake up to a warm,
dry day with a toasty water temperature of 16ºc! The waves were set off
in age groups, swimming 350m upstream and 1150m downstream in the River
Dee, this produced some unbelievable swim splits – Mike Reason has since
confirmed that the event website states that there should be virtually
no current at this time of year, so we are all claiming these as PB’s!!
The
bike leg was relatively flat and fast with a few roundabouts and
turnaround points the only disruption for most of us (apart from myself
who had a few mechanical issues that I thought were going to end my day
early, but managed to avoid the dreaded DNF with the help of a Co2
canister!! I told anyone that would listen but on the off chance you
didn’t know, there is my excuse!!!).
Out onto the run and a well supported 2 laps of the park brought the triathlon to an end. Mike Reason was 1st
home in 2.12.50 followed by myself in 2.27.42, Chris Whittaker in
2.34.53, Paul Jackson 2.43.15, Linda Whittaker in 2.45.08and Helen
Minshall in 3.14.35. Great efforts by all especially considering the
Olympic distance which was a step up for some of us. The event was well
organised, well marshalled, well supported (thanks to the A&Ters who
got up early to come and support – Alex, John H, Terry and Neil and
Anthony who rode down!!). It was a great course and had a cracking goody
bag and lots of freebies to justify the entry fee, I would definitely
recommend it to anybody for next year. The only downside was the absence
of our Tri Capt Clare who missed out though injury after being knocked
off her bike the week before, get well soon Clare!!

Sale 5k Sizzler
On Thursday evening 10 A&T athletes made their way upto Sale for the first of 4 races in the Sale 5k Sizzler series. The weather was rather muggy which took the edge off this fast and flat course. A large field of 386 runners completed the race with Lewis Eccleston, returning from recent injury, first back for A&T with an excellent time of 16.51 to take 19th position. Colin Rigby putting in another consistent good run came in next with 17.26 for 36th place. Gary Stevens on a mission ran a good race to post a new 5k PB with 18.01 to take 54 position. Well done Gary! Scott Christey followed Gary in a few seconds later to take 70th place with 18.35. Robin Chan had a good race to finish just outside his PB with 19.10 and 94th place. Dale Kenyon followed up the super performance at The Three Sisters 5k with another 5k PB with 19.20 and 99th position. Well done Dale! Steve Foster ran in next to claim 163rd with 21.20. Another one to follow up a PB from The Three Sisters 5k was Carole Baines who posted another PB here with 21.22 and 169th position. Well done Carole! The Baron came next with 22.08 who just managed to outrun Ray Raylor in the closing stages who posted a pleasing 22.15 and they both finished 196th and 198th respectively. Some of the times were questioned by a few of us as we clocked times on our garmins a second or two quicker but the above are the official times. For our troubles we all got a goody bag with a runners water bottle, some oats and a cereal bar. Would also like to thank Pete Chan, Garry Baines and Jean Mann for support on route to help keep us going. The next race in the series is a week on Thursday being the 19th July were hopefully it will be a little less muggy.

Eddies Revenge Wednesday 27th June 3.8mile 1060'
I
was pleased to have a few more club members join me for Eddies
Revenge..Starting at the methodist church at Brushes Clough. A nice
warm night, which made a change after the last few very wet, windy
races.
We start climbing straight from the start upto the
mast where finally we get a bit of respite on a downhill back to the
carpark, only to start climbing up the same hill we started on.
Terry Gardner came
in first for A&T at 35.19 followed by Paul Basnett at 39.18,
Michaela Shaw was next on her only fell race of the year at 41.49,
followed by Louise Dobson at 44.29 with myself not far behind after
going the wrong
way and an extra hill at 45.15 and Tracey Parry coming in on her 1st
race this season at 51.34
A&T ladies won the
team prize, Michaela collected 2nd V35 and Louise got a prize just
because she deserved it..? Well done everyone, hopefully see you all at
the next race.

TOWN OF RUNNERS, Manchester film screening, 13th or 14th July
Retrak invites you to TOWN OF RUNNERS, Manchester film screening, 13th or 14th July
FAO: Astley & Tyldesley Road
Runners
Can you help me?
As a Manchester based running club I thought your members
would be interested in attending our one-off “Pop Up Cinema Event” screening
of the film 'Town of Runners'.
We are a Manchester based
children’s charity and all proceeds from the pop-up film screening will
go directly to our work with street children in Ethiopia.
‘Town of Runners’ is highly acclaimed
feature length documentary film about a remarkable running coach at an athletic
club in an impoverished Ethiopian village. With virtually no facilities he has
trained an incredible series of brilliant runners resulting in several Olympic
Gold Medals. All athletes are trained at the same tiny village club by the same
man. This is truly remarkable story and a very topical theme with the Olympics
coming up.
To see the film trailer, buy tickets or to find out about
Retrak please click here: http://town-of-runners.eventbrite.com/
Please help us to raise funds
by forwarding this email to your contacts and members.

Amberswood 10k
On Sunday morning 7 A&T road runners made the short journey to Spring View, Wigan for the Amberswood 10k. The weather was a bit dull with a drop or two of rain in the air. The race was a 2 lap circuit around the trails, woods and fields around Amberswood. The course in places had more than a feel of a cross country race because of the recent diluge of rain it got a little bit muddy in places.
The race was completed by 109 competitors in which Glyn Kay of Horwich RMI took the spoils with a time of 37.04. Scott Christey was first back for A&T with 40.59 and taking 11th overall. Colin Kay came next with 42.26 to take 16th position. Suzanne Gregory had an outstanding race to take the prize for second lady and 31st overall with a time of 47.38. Hot on her heels and running stride for stride with Suzanne for most of the race was KellyAnne Towns who took the FV35 prize and was 3rd lady with a time of 48.12. Well done ladies. Ray Taylor came in next clocking 49.26 with Dave Crowe not far behind him finishing in 49.54. The Baron had a race he'd rather forget and completed the A&T line with a time of 51.46.
After the race it was time for the free pie and peas for the people who had pre-entered and then the presentation. Thanks to Emma Owen for the photo.
