Liver Hill Fell Race 5mile/820ft

Four A&T runners ventured out for the 1st fell race of the season. Terry Gardiner, Marjorie Lee, Louise Hampton and myself.
The race started on time from the rugby pitch this year due to work be carried out on the grounds.  We headed of straight up the first hill usually descended at the finish in cross country (which was quite nice and dry), then a continuous climb for the first mile and half, eventually flattening out which made negotiating the bogs and numerous stiles a little easier before the last climb to the Marshall's and turning around to follow the same route back to the finish.  I managed to pass all my fellow A&T runners, but unfortunately they was heading the other way back to the finish I still had to get to the marshal at the top.
Terry Gardiner came in 1st with a time of 43.56 despite his injury, Marjorie Leigh with 53.54 followed very closely by Louise Hampton at 53.58, well done to Louise with her first fell race and I don't think it will be her last, then myself with 57.37.
Next A&T fell race is
Sat April 14th Wardle Skyline  2pm
7.2 m/1250’
Wardle Square, off A58 Rochdale/Halifax Rd.
Entry on day fee:£5.00
Meet at train station @ 1pm

Gin Pit Double Marathon 2012

Well what a weekend, I feel totally shattered!

The first thing I want to mention is the weather.  What were the odds on us seeing unbroken sunshine and temperatures of 19 degrees at the end of March in rainy Manchester? Utterly unbelievable!

Now to talk about the running, the event is in its second year and created a lot of interest, reaching the entry limit before Christmas. It attracted endurance athletes from across the country with entrants coming from as far as Kent, Devon, Cornwall and Scotland. There were a mix of Iron men and 100 marathon club members, as well as other ultra and multiple marathon runners. We were also joined by runners from more local clubs, including Leigh Harriers, Horwich, Radcliffe and Stockport who wanted to take part in this challenge.

On the race weekend we had 38 runners on the Saturday & 35 runners on the Sunday with 30 of them completing both days. Superb performances from the winner Rogers Hayes (from Devon) completing the 2 days in 6 hours 40 minutes and 33 seconds and Caroline Hemming (from Glazebrook) for the ladies in 7 hours 2 minutes and 56 seconds. There was a new course record set on the Saturday by Allister Goulding from Leigh Harriers in 3 hours and 10 seconds, shame he didn’t break the 3 hours, maybe next year. Great effort from all the runners whether they completed 1 or both days.

On the Saturday Steve Coleman, Paul Basnett, Craig Bradbury, Stuart Adamson & myself represented Astley & Tyldesley Road Runners with Stuart Adamson & myself completing the Sunday as well. This is a fantastic first time achievement for Stuart. Sadly Craig had to pull out at half way due to stomach problems but Steve Coleman had an impressive finish on the Saturday and took 2nd place in 3 hours 24 minutes 22 seconds.

Thanks go out to…
Yuk-Lam, for letting me arrange the event, holding the fort at the Gin Pit and looking after the refreshments & the kids while I ran it!
Gary & Clare, for time keeping.
Manning the water stations were Neil, Emma, Anne, Mark, Clare, Craig, Dave & Soozy with their dog Bob and Barry on the Sunday after running on the Saturday!
The marshals, John, Christine & Anne.
Helpers at the finish, Cath, Anne & my mum, Irene.
My dad Bill, for helping me put up the signs.
Spencer, for cycling the course early on the Saturday morning before the start of the first day to make sure there were no last minute problems.
Phil, for the photos.
Jackie, for getting the 420 bottles of water.
Pat & Joe at the Welfare club, for letting us use their facilities.
And everyone else that came down to support.

Many of the runners have emailed or Facebooked me saying how much they have enjoyed the event and to pass on their thanks to all the helpers.

I’ve not had a chance yet to tot up exactly how much we have raised but it will be in the region of £750.00. The money will be going to the Brathay Trust from Ambleside near Windermere to help them with the great work they do with disadvantaged young people.

The runners all seemed to enjoy the event and have given very positive feedback, to such an extent that some have already decided to come back again next year. I haven’t even contemplated next year but it’s highly likely there will be a Gin Pit double in 2013.

Group Bike Ride

On the 31st March there is a group bike ride which involves a 10mile time trial which will be handicapped on ability so we can all finish at a similar time, this is good training for the triathlon season and also a good way of combining different abilities. The start of the TT is at the bottom of Belmont rd at Astley Bridge in Bolton and is a straight route to the m65 roundabout with no traffic lights or junctions. The ride over to the start will just be a gentle warm up of approx 8 miles from Westhoughton roundabout then there's different route options we can take coming home. I suggest that we see who's interested and sort a meet up time from there.
Cheers, Alex Foster

Open Water Swimming at Salford Quays - Sat 14 April

The first open water swim will be taking part at USwim Salford Quays on Sat 14th April. Everyone welcome, more the merrier as moral support will be needed before we jump in the cold, murky waters of the Quays!

Manchester Live Tri Challenge - Sat 4th August

We have been invited to take part in the Triathlon England Live Site on Sat 4th August. The day is set up to celebrate and promote triathlons as a sport and also give people a chance to take part in a mini challenge.

If you didn’t take part last year or you need a reminder, teams of three will race over five minutes. One will cycle, one run as far as they can over five minutes. What does the swimmer do? Well they swim in the Endless pool for five minutes with flow of the water increasing, should they touch the back wall before the five minutes then that teams race is over.

The women’s and men’s races will be shown live on the big screen in the square so no one will miss any of the action from Hyde Park. Teams can be all men/women or mixed but must be 18 or over.
(Sat 4th is the Women's Olympic Tri, Tue 7th Aug is the Men's Olympic Tri on the big screen)

A few of us took part in this last year and it was really good. Our women's team won! You don't have to be brilliant at any of the events, it was more a bit of fun, nice afternoon out and a way to promote the club (as a running and tri club). If anyone is interested in putting their name down please can you let me know. The closing date for entries is at the end of May so I will need to know by then.

Liverpool Half Marathon by Paul Basnett

On Sunday 13 A&T members made their way down the A580 for the 2012 Liverpool Half Marathon. The convoy started, after toilet relays, at 7.30 from the Baron's Palace before we went onto the pick up more for the convoy in Pennington. The journey down was pretty uneventful except for me unwittingly trying to lose the other 2 cars in the convoy for which I am sure they were most pleased.

We arrived with plenty of time to spare which turned out to be a good call as we obtained a parking spot without issue. Then it was off to check out the public conveniences for the event before stripping down into our race gear. The start area was rather congested and this year none of us got an ideal spot. The race started at 9.30 but the queue to get into the start funnel was rather busy to say the least. Bacon Mon said the race will be starting soon to which I replied it started 5 minutes ago, pointing to people running in the distance, and that I had no chance of now winning this race!

It took us over 10 minutes to finally get across the start line, by which time the leader would have been at least 2 miles into the race. The first 2 miles had uphill climb where it then undulated for the next 7 miles before flattening out onto the waterfront for the final 4 miles. For the whole race the path in front you was rather busy and having to frustratingly dodge in and out of people or check your stride. Not ideal and even I got a bit of race rage.

Meanwhile back at the start\finish area the A&T cheerleaders, Michaela and Christine,  were trying to be poached by someone saying he was famous. I have tried that line myself upon occasion to no avail but it seemed to work for him. I think they said his name was Kriss Akabusi. Thankfully his so called agent pulled him away. Joking aside though the ladies said he was really nice about having his picture taken even though his agent was trying to drag him away. He always comes across as a jolly decent chap on TV so it's good to hear it's not just for the cameras.

Steve Coleman, who also had his own fair share of race rage, was first across the line for A&T with a time of 1.27.59. Chris Scholes had another good run on the back of his Trimpell 20 effort recording 1.41.02. Then it was Ian "Bacon Mon" Hamilton putting the marathon training to good use with 1.41.57. The Baron followed Bacon Mon on in a few minutes later with 1.45.28. Anthony Hart, who had been working the night before in Liverpool until 2.30am, came next with 1.47.14. KellyAnne Towns had a very good run to be our first lady home with 1.47.52. Louise Hampton also had a good race finishing not far behind KellyAnne with 1.51.14. Anne Garvey and Kim ONeil both running their maiden half marathons came next with 2.04.22 and 2.05.17 respectively. I don't think Kim enjoyed the experience but I'm sure she will be back to give one another go. And completing the A&T line up were Tracy Waterfall-Chadwick and Joan Cooke who both ran the course together but must have decided to race each other in a sprint finish. This time Joan was outsprinted by Tracy with Tracy recording 2.20.36 and Joan 2.20.45.

For our troubles we all received a finishers medal and a decent technical tshirt. Then it was time to pose for a few pictures and a bit of post race analysis before making our way back up the A580 for home. Also thanks to Tracy for the post race cake and Bacon Mon for the chocolate.

Amberswood 10k Nr.Wigan - Sunday 1st July

Its Dave Collins at Wigan Harriers.

I wonder if you could do us a favour please and publicise a trail race within your club – link below, flyer attached.

A local football club organised a 5k / 10k version last year – Gary won the 5k J, and Shaun Moran ran in the 10k. However, the football club didn’t want to be involved this year and it looked as though the event would die. We thought it was too good a race to just let go and so we’ve taken over its organisation.

We’ve decided to target a 10k trail race, to appeal more to the club runners, but have also brought in a 2.5k race for youngsters and people who fancy giving a race a go.

Any support that you can muster would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks

Dave

Gin Pit marathon‏

Gin Pit Marathon
Thanks to everyone that has offered to help with the Gin Pit Double marathon on 24th & 25th March. The plans are coming together very nicely.
I'm just looking for a couple more marshals to cover a spot on Ellenbrook Road between 10am & 10:45am where the runners turn onto the trails towards Worsley. This spot is not far from the Red Lion pub.
I am also looking for a volunteer for the 2nd water station at Marsland Green Bridge on the Canal in Astley on the Saturday between 10:50am & 12:45pm.
Lastly I would like to have I more helper at the finish on the Saturday to help give out finisher’s medals, between noon & 2:30pm.
If you can help with any of these please contact me either on Facebook, Tel 07739 393 393 or email: malc26.2@gmail.com
Should any members wish to run (as a training run) part of the course you are welcome to come along and keep the competitors company either day. The start is 9:30am both days. The only thing I must ask is you don't take the water from the water stations as this might mean there isn't enough for the entered runners.
You are all welcome at the Gin Pit to watch the start of the race 9:30am each day or watch the runners finish which will be from Noon onwards. We have Stuart Adamson, Steve Coleman, Barry Allman, Paul Basnett, Craig Bradbury and myself from A&T who I'm sure would love an A&T Cheer.

Bent & Bongs 10k Update

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help, it looks like we have filled all the roles and we can now move on with organising the race.

Entries are now coming in thick and fast, i'd be surprised if we didn't get a record entry in the race.  Clubs such as Radcliffe, Belle Vue and Todmorden have put this race on their fixture list, so expect a large turn out from these clubs.

There should also be articles going in the local papers next week.

Ron Hill is 50/50 about doing the race as he is suffering from sore knees!

We will be shortly be posting the marshalling points, the marshals who are going to be near Millers/Beefold may want to go directly there instead of coming to the Gin Pit.

For anyone who is racing, keep your eyes out for our very own Mark Lysycia who will be taking photo's on the day.

I'll keep you all updated.

Silverstone Half Marathon by Paul Basnett

On Sunday morning The Baron, Libby Watson and cheerleaders for the day Michaela Shaw and Christine Farnworth made their way to Silverstone for the annual half marathon. The weather at the outset from Leigh was a bright morning with a rather chilly temperature. We set off around 8.30 aiming to arrive at Silverstone for 11am as per the race guide instructions. The trip down proved to be fairly uneventful except for the cheerleaders giggling away whilst causing mischief on their mobile phones! The Baron was wondering what the little minxes were upto!
At approximately 6k from Silverstone, at just before 11, the traffic came to a standstill and it was obvious we was not going to arrive at 11 as planned. Getting ever so slowly closer to the venue and the 12 noon race start time approaching ever so quickly, Libby decided to strip off on the back seat. No I had not turned the heating up full in an effort to get all the girls taking their clothes off but she wanted to save time by stripping down to her race gear. After parking up we followed the steady stream of people we guessed were making their way to the start. The weather here was sunny with warm temperatures and thus did not require my A&T jacket.

The cheerleaders said their good luck to Libby and myself as we made our way to the start using a short cut via climbing a gate. We made the starting grid with a good 10 minutes to spare mostly by virtue of the fact that the race was delayed for 10 minutes due to the traffic problems and people still arriving. We both moved forward as we got on the start area at the 2 hour finishers marker. Libby moved a bit further ahead than me. Approximately 6500 runners took part in the race.

At not long passed 12 noon the race was off and by this time the sun was already shining bright. At the time I didn't think anything of it but as the race went on it would play on my mind more and more. The half marathon course was basically run on the Silverstone circuit with zig-zagging through the centre of the circuit and down the pit lane. There was very little shelter from the sun with only about 1/2 mile of the race in the shade! At about 8 miles I was feeling dehydrated and was begging a water station to appear only for the next best thing to appear a Lucozade station. I stopped to take on board refreshments and never really got going again. I then ended up run\walking the last 5 miles. During the last 2 miles I saw 2 ambulances with sirens on moving inbetween runners and a few people laid out at the side of track in the recovery position being attended to by ambulance crew.

I managed to cross the line in a disappointing 1.49.23 and 1410th place but upon later reflection was fairly satisfied with the time given the conditions and the amount of walking that I did. Also I was not one of the ones laid out in the recovery position so that was a bonus! After collecting my goody bag I decided to find the water and crash out in the shade for a bit but not before being spotted by the cheerleaders for some non flattering pictures.

After coming round a bit and making my way to out of the finish area Michaela kindly went and bought me a pint of guinness which went down a treat. Not long after that Libby found us and she was sporting her new tshirt from the goody bag or should I say new nightie as the extra large tshirt buried her. Not sure what percentage of runner is extra large but apparently all the goody bags contained the one size! Libby whilst not having as good a run as she had wanted, still ran a very good race in the conditions finishing 28th female in a time of 1.37.32.

We then stayed around a little longer soaking up the first real rays of sun of 2012 whilst I devoured anything I could find in my goody bag. However I did not eat the tshirt and I still have not tried it on for size but judging by the lucozade\beer belly pictures it may well fit! A few more pictures were then taken sporting our finishers medal before we made our way back up the M1 and M6 for home.
The race was well organised with my only gripe being some lucozade only stations on a hot day when I just wanted water! Oh and only extra large tshirts in the goody bag! With better running weather the course is definitely pretty fast but I doubt I will make the return next year merely because of the travelling to and from the venue. However I did enjoy the day out and even though I did not run as well as I would have liked I'm still glad we made the trip, and I think the ladies would agree.

Retford half marathon by Steve Coleman

Six half marathons this year so far. PB with Great NorthWest two weeks ago at 1h 22m 54s, last week was the Hawewater half with enough hill work but improved time to 1h 28m 8s and cold. Temperature very different today for Retford half marathon. Blue skys with 19c let people picnic without coats on and runners sweating away around the course. Could have been June! First half flat but hills after that! Came in 1h 26m 22s.

Dambuster Alex!

Big well done to Alex Foster who took part in the Dambuster Duathlon, Leicester on Saturday.

This was the first duathlon of the British Championships and also part of the GE Great Britain Age Group Team World Championships. The event consisted of a 10K run, 42K bike, 5 K run.

Alex had a great results coming in 19th with cracking times of:
36.39/1.11.59/17.29

Well done Alex - great start to the tri year!

Please make sure you put your correct t-shirt size on as well.

There is also a training day which we are asked to attend on Saturday 7th April (please make sure you tick the correct day) .. not everyone needs to attend but i'd suggest most of us do.

Please follow the link below.

I have set up a code for all your members to use when they register online.

The code is: ""AandT2012""

When registering go to the link below and select the Drink station marshal option, you will then be prompted to enter the code.
