Northern Cross-Country Championships Saturday 28/01/12 – by Mark Riches

Lewis Eccleston finished a fantastic 37th against the best U20 men in the North & beat a couple of the Greater Manchester lads who beat him at Woodbank Park earlier this month
This excellent run should have secured his selection to represent Greater Manchester at the Inter-counties cross country in Birmingham on 10/03/12

He covered the 8K Pontefract Park course in 30.38

Well done Lewis!

Blackpool Triathlon 10 June 2012

We have had an email from the organiser of Blackpool Triathlon, offering us a free place in the triathlon and £10 off entry for anyone else who would like to do it. It looks a good course (but includes a sea swim so I'm out!). It's a good option if you can't make any of the Fylde Trilogy dates and cheap too!  If anyone fancies doing it, let me know and I'll book you in!

Some course details below:
We have an open Water Sea swim, closed course for the Bike around the lower

pier and the Run goes along the prom front and finishes in front of the

Tower, it should be a great course.

All the details are on the website www.BlackpoolTriathlon.co.uk

We are also supporting Local Charity Donnas Dream house and any volunteers

to marshal would be greatly appreciated too.

A&T CONISTON WEEKEND- 26/27 May by Alex Foster

A&T CONISTON WEEKEND- 26/27 May
There will be a few people entering the Coniston open water swim which takes place on the 27th May. This weekend is a bank holiday and a few of us have discussed camping over and going up on the morning of the 26th May to do a day of cycling on the Coniston Old Man triathlon route which is a very testing course with inclines of up to 30%.
The campsite is positioned at the swim registration so would save getting up early that morning to travel and i am sure the bike ride will get you nicely warmed up for the cold swim in the crystal clear water of coniston. I will attach some photo's of the ride and a link to a video just to give you a idea of the challenge ahead.
 cheers, Alex Foster

Spin Class Anyone?

This Monday 30th January a few of us are doing a spinning bike workout at Fitness Exchage Gym (formerly Cosgroves) next to Atherton Train Station.

It will just be A&T'ers only (max 6 people) doing a 45 min class to a DVD.

Great low impact workout and ideal for people who are currently injured.

We are meeting at 5.30pm inside the gym but plan to do some core exercises first so will probably start the class at 5.45pm.

Bring a towel and plenty of water!

If you would like to come please email me so i can keep a note of numbers.

The cost is £6.00 payable on the door but you are free to use the full gym facilities and showers during your visit

We are very short of volunteers for parkrun in February so if anyone can help at all please see the attached link for dates and contact Bill Bradley on PenningtonFlashHelpers@parkrun.com
The event has been a great success over the past year and it would be a great shame to have to cancel an event.
Many Thanks

A&T cross-country – by Mark Riches

In an earlier posting in October I put forward revised provisional dates for the series of 3 races on the Gin Pit x-country course, as below:
·       22/01/12
·       05/02/12
·       19/02/12
It as now be decided, in view of the very congressed timetable, that we will have a one-off race on Saturday 04/02/12
The race, which will start at 13:30, will be 5K for ladies & 10K for men

Wednesday, 25 January 2012

Great turnout at training last night with 23 runners tackling the various routes. We welcomed 4 new-comers and all of them found someone who they could comfortably run with. Great to see some old faces on the comeback trail as well.
Let's keep the numbers up because the steady runs are just as important as the track and stamina sessions.

AGM Sunday 29th January

A final reminder that this Sunday is our club AGM at the Gin Pit starting at 8pm.

Lots of items on the agenda and a chance for everyone to pay their subs for the year once we have agreed the fee.

It would be great to see as many people as possible.

Tri Hoodies - would you like one?

If anyone in the club would like a tri hoody, I will be ordering some in the next 2 weeks. The cost will be £12.50 (thanks to Neil Hodgson for printing!) I will be buying these personally from the supplier so won't be using the club accounts. Therefore, I will need money off anyone who would like one by Fri 10th Feb. If you would like one please let me know. I will be at the AGM on Sunday night if you would like to pay me then.

(Hoodies are available to any club member, not just tri team.)

The hoodies are royal blue and come in sizes S,M,L,XL - they are quite big sizes so go down a size if you are unsure or ask one of the tri team if you can try theirs on!

Thanks, Clare

Club Open Evening - Tuesday 24th January 2012

Don't forget it's our "open evening" on Tuesday 24th January.
There were articles in this week's local papers so hopefully we can attract some new faces to the club.
If you know any family or friends who might want to join us then invite them down.
Would also be great to see a big turn out from current members.
Meeting at Atherton Train Station at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm prompt start

Leigh Sports Village Cross Country‏ by Paul Basnett

On Saturday the Baron and Bacon Mon decided to race the LSV cross country as it was local. After registering we sheltered from the wind and rain whereupon another A&T member came to register armed with a fistful of silver coins, it was Lewis Eccleston. This week we dispensed with the tent and the changing area was the boot of my car. We left this until the last minute as the wind chilled you to the bone standing around in shorts and vest.

At 2.30 the race was off. This entailed a small lap followed by 3 large laps totalling approximately 10k. Lewis was quickly off in the distance not to be seen by me again. Bacon Mon was a little way in front of me after the small loop and I set about keeping in sight of him with some encouragement on the way from Brenda, Mark and Jo Riches and a little further into the course by Suzanne and Dave. Suzanne's words of encouragement had been pinched, I believe, from a rather encouraging marshall at the Pennington Flash park run she had done that morning, only 2 laps to go! They'd picked a vantage point so they could get us twice on the same lap without moving.

At the end of the first lap I started to get a stitch probably as a result of the pursuit of Bacon Mon so backed off the pace a bit and took some advice of Pops, who was also supporting, upon how to run it out. This meant on lap 2 Bacon Mon got out of sight and I was passed by a few older runners but by the end of the 2nd lap the stitch had gone and I set off in pursuit of them. I was quickly closing in on them by the time we finished but alas didn't quite manage to catch them. Lewis was first home for A&T with another good run in a time of 37.15 and taking 12th overall. Ian "Bacon Mon" Hamilton came in next with a time of 48.32 and the Baron closely followed him home, well closer than normal, in a time of 50.48. It was then time for Barry Allman to take our picture, along with some of our support, but unfortunately without Lewis being on it as he was probably at home in the bath by the time I had finished.

Tri Team Meeting Report by Clare Unsworth

The Tri Team had a meeting last night to get a league up and running , sort out fixtures and discuss training plans. Thanks to all that attended.

The following was decided by those at the meeting:

Present at meeting: Clare, Alex, Dan, Mike, Terry H, Helen, Neil H, Paul, Colin, John Lee, Jon Hyde

1. League

After some discussion we decided to keep things very simple for our first season as a tri club and our first club league.

  • The league will consist of 4 triathlons. We decided it would be better if we could get as many members as possible to do the same events to create a bit of team spirit and competition.

  • Members have to complete 3 of these triathlons to qualify for an award. The best 3 results will count towards the final points total.

  • Points will be allocated in the same way as the road and x country club leagues work. Eg: first place A&Ter receives 30 points, 2nd place receives 29 points etc etc

  • There will be seperate male/female leagues

  • 1 bonus point will be awarded to members doing all 4 triathlons

The triathlons we selected are:
22 April  - Ribby Hall (sprint)
20 May  - St Annes Tri (sprint)
1 July  - Chester Tri (Olympic)
25 Sept  - Fleetwood Tri (sprint)

(these races were selected as they appeared to be most popular and most people were going to enter them anyway. To be fair we decided to go with the majority vote)

  • Mike Reason will take charge of  the league table and allocating points
For any more Tri Info you can contact me claroj@hotmail.com

A&T cross-country Hyndburn 14/01/12 – by Mark Riches

Despite the ground frost, 10 brave A&T runners made the 2nd trip of this cross-country season to Hyndburn (there was a Red Rose fixture here in October) This time it was a Mid Lancs fixture & as such the quality of the competition is slightly higher but despite this the A&T men are ‘holding their own’ & are currently top of Division 3
Only 2 A&T ladies this time Anne Garvey & Emma Higgins; both in different age categories so both gain maximum points; Anne covered the 6K course in 34.52 to Emma’s 39.16
Next it was the turn of the men (10k this time) Simon Ford said just before the start that he was just going to jog round as he had a bit of a cold. As soon as the gun went Alex Foster & Alan Hilton disappeared into the distance pursued by Troy Topping. I found myself running with Simon for the first lap until he decided that his jogging pace was much quicker than my flat out pace & set off after Troy. Alex was first A&T finisher in 53rd place (38.19) with the new favourite to take the vets title Alan next in 39.29. Simon did catch Troy just 40.40 to 40.54. Yours truly finished just over 1 ½ minutes later (42.35) followed by Craig Bradbury (48.43) & Ian Hamilton, who had another great run finishing in 48.52. Paul Basnett (52.08) completed the line up
There was no Brenda’s cafe so we were soon on our way back to our warm cars!
Only 2 Club races left Barrow (11/02/12) & Leyland (03/03/12) – see you all there

Club "Open Evening" - Tuesday 24th January 2012

We are hosting an 'open evening' on Tuesday 24th January which will incorporate our usual Tuesday run from Atherton Train Station.

The main aim is to attract local joggers / runners to the club who feel they would love to run with other people but maybe scared of joining a running club.

We would like as many of our members to support the evening and show potential members what A&T is all about.

If you know any friends who fancy coming down then feel free to invite them.

On that evening we have choices of 3.5, 5.5 and 8.5 mile runs.

Haigh Hall Relays - Saturday 10th March

This year the Haigh Hall relays are back on the calender.

We would like to put in 2 male teams and 1 ladies team to compete against the top teams in the area over 4 legs x 3.75 miles on a very undulating course .. similar to Haigh Hall 4

There are prizes available for 1st 3 male teams, 1st 2 ladies teams, 1st 2 vets teams and 1 mixed team.

Ideally we need our fastest runners in the event to make us competitive but i would not put anyone off putting their name forward .. if we get lots of volunteers we would be willing to put in an extra team.

If you would like to take part please could you email me on stevensgary@hotmail.com

The event takes place on Saturday 10th March start time 12 noon.
