Last Sunday 6 A& T swimmers headed up to Coniston for
the first race of the Epic Lakes Swim Series. It was a beautiful sunny day, and
with temperatures were soaring into the high 20’s, the lake was looking more and
more appealing.
First up was the 3.8k event at 10.15am, with myself and
Terry Hughes taking part. There were 190 swimmers in total. Terry finished in
01:17:32, and I rolled in at 01:26:35, although I wasted a good 3 or 4 minutes
due to several unsuccessful attempts at standing up to get out of the lake –
fell flat on my face twice and then backwards!! The world was spinning for about
half an hour, but after a lie down and a bite to eat, I was back down at the
lakeside to cheer on the rest of the team.
The 1 mile event started at 1pm, with 247 swimmers. Alex
Foster came 8th overall with an admirable time of 23:24. Jonathan
Hyde came in at 29:25, followed by Craig Bradbury at 36:08 and Clare Unsworth at
40:08.
There are 3 events in total, at Coniston, Derwentwater
(17th June) and Ullswater (15th July), and there are 3
distances on offer; 500m for the less experienced swimmers, 1 mile, and 3.8k for
those who fancy their chances at the Ironman distance. It’s a really great
event, and I would encourage anyone who enjoys swimming to give it a go! See
