Amberswood “Spooky Woods” 4 Mile Trail Run 30th October 2011 by Cath Hodgetts
I decided that it was time to have a break from cross country and the Amberswood “Spooky Woods” Trail Run sounded like just my thing me being a lover of horrors, thrillers etc. As it turned out this was more cross country than any of the cross country so far this season with all the mud.
The race was due to start at 11 am, but actually started about 15 minutes late. It was a small turn out of around 32 runners. Some were running in fancy dress, skeletons, Dracula, vampires, witches etc. Me? I decided to dazzle people in the sun with my bright A&T top (I am scary enough to look at when I am running as it is without dressing up!).
The start was a bit muddy, but nothing to worry about. We had to go through a field of weeds, nettles and grass to get to the proper trail route.
The actual route itself was two laps in the woods. In places the mud was ankle deep, sloppy and very, very slippery, cold and squelchy (new technical term).
The organisers had put a lot of thought into it and put out pumpkins, graves with trainers hanging off or race numbers. There was music in places and Freddie Kruger turned out to do a bit of marshalling, telling us to run faster (got no arguments off me!).
If this wasn’t enough to contend with there was also slippery logs across the path and some wooden bridges which were slippery, made worse by my muddy trail shoes.
I finished in 38 mins 36 seconds, 15th overall and 4th out of 14 women, which I am happy with considering all the mud and having various monsters after me and Freddie out there too. At the end of the race everyone got a plate of Pie and Peas.
Anyone who is thinking of this next year who wants to have a bit of fun, doesn’t mind getting covered in mud and fancies a laugh then go for it. It’s a small but fun and very friendly race, seems to be well organised, despite the late start.

A&T cross-country Townley Park Saturday 29/10/11 – by Mark Riches
Another good turnout of A&T runners (25) for the third cross-country of the year
By the time I arrived the tent was almost up & then it was a case of ensuring everyone had a number (ladies first.) There were a few late entries but only Steve Foster was special enough to have a handwritten number (not sure what happened to the original number 1000) & “Gardiner, Terry Gardiner” ended up with 1007 this year (think James Bond!)
Once the ladies had set off to tackle the 5K course, I kept the crowd entertained by trying no less than 3 times to put on my running vest before realising that I had safety pinned the front & back together!
Next it was the turn of the 16 A&T men to tackle this very runable course; 10K this time
Not surprisingly 1st A&T finisher again was Lewis Eccleston with an excellent 40th position & a time of 37.10. Alex Foster finished 48 seconds behind Lewis & was pursued by Simon Ford (38.35.) A little further down the field, yours truly (Mark Riches) after catching Scott Christie on the 1st lap was trying to catch up with Alan Hilton but with the last lap approaching I was beginning to think I wouldn’t catch him this time when he pulled up with a stitch! I took my chance & pressed on then my thoughts turned to how far behind Shaun Moran was as he likes this course & always finishes quickly. I managed to hold on (just) finishing in 39.17 to Shaun’s 39.41, Alan battled on finishing in 41.49 followed by Scott (41.56) & Jon Hyde (42.00.) John Lee had a great run finishing in 43.30. Next Derek Coop & Terry Gardiner finished within 1 second of each other (44.12 & 44.13) followed by Dale Kenyon (44.51) & Mark Lysycia (46.01.) Ian Hamilton also had a great run finishing in 48.00 with Paul Basnett (50.41) Dave Crowe (51.35) & Barry Allman (1.01.53) completed the line up
We all enjoyed the delights of Brenda’s cafĂ© while discussing the race (hills / mud / tree routes etc.) & again we were one of the last clubs to leave!
Next race Saturday 12/11/11 at Leverhulme Park, Bolton (Red Rose)

Palma 2011 - by Paul Basnett
On the weekend of Sunday 16th October 9 A&T members made their way to Palma for the 10k, half marathon or support. We landed on the Friday to be greeted by fantastic weather with temperatures in the mid 20s celsius. This sunny weather and high temperatures lasted for the whole of the time for the people who were just there until the Monday\Tuesday. On the Friday we decided to collect our race numbers so we could then relax and have a few beers whilst taking in the sights around the city of Palma before the race on Sunday.
On race day it was an early morning start and free regular buses were provided down to the race. The sun was already shining and the temperature in the early 20s for the 9am start. The atmosphere was fantastic as thousands of runners milled around getting their kit bag ready which could be handed in for later pick up. I'd liken the atmosphere to the one at the Manchester 10k but with better weather, better surroundings and the obvious international feel.
There were 3 races taking place the 10k, the half marathon and marathon. All three races started at the same time but each turned off at their respective places before proceeding to the finish to get your chipped time. In the 10k was Alan Hilton who finished a brilliant 20th overall with 37.06. I think he must have had some jet propelled help! Next was Troy Topping in 39th overall with 38.53. I followed them home jogging in a good few minutes later with 50.20 after starting toward the back and getting severely boxed in so just enjoyed the run for what it was. Clare had a good run with 67.32 and that may have been helped by the A&T encouragement on the way. I saw her on my way back to the finish and I swear she was on her final running step before going to walk when I shouted come on Clare keep it going. She muttered some oaths but did carry on running. At about the 9k mark the half marathon runners turned off into the central Palma streets. The half marathon specialist Steve Coleman was first back for A&T with 89.36 and 143rd place. Following Steve home was Derek Coop with 98.38 with Terry Hughes finishing in 104.46. I'm sure Terry got as boxed in as I did as he started not far from me but I'm sure enjoyed the run out anyway. Completing the A&T half marathon line up was Barry "Pops" Allman who managed to obtain a free half of beer at one of our favourite bars near C&A. He finished in 2.04.39 but still good miles in the bank for Pops, k-ching! Liz Ellicot and her friend Vicky assured us that they were supporting us even though they were still in bed sleeping off the night before!
After the race we were all given medals and there were plenty of freebies to be had from alcohol free beer, coke, bananas, energy drinks, donuts etc. Then it was off to the tents for a cold shower but at least it refreshed you slightly. At one point whilst I was in the tent a woman walked in and had a good look around the mens tent for about 30 seconds before deciding it was the wrong tent! Thankfully I had already smuggled my budgie so avoided the embarrassment after a cold shower. I then wondered if I could pull the same trick in the female tent but I didn't fancy a night in the police cells! Later on Clare mentioned how many budgies she had seen so far, as blokes decided to get changed outside the tent! I think the last count was 9. She also added that she had also seen someone lubricating a spherical object before the race. I said I would do this in the hotel room before leaving next time!
Once we'd cleared the race area finish and having met up with the girls and boys from Wesham and Burnden we thought it would be rude not to sample some of the local hospitality. This turned out to be all day session albeit at a fairly sedate pace averaging 1 pint per hour and intake of food whilst exchanging conversation, banter, jokes etc. The rest of the weekend and for me the week entailed a combination of relaxing, soaking up the sun, drinking beer and taking in the sights. Myself and Pops did the Palma bus tour and took a look around the castle as well as take the 100 year old train to Soller for the day. On the days we were not sight seeing we just relaxed at a secluded beach cove that had a bar that also served excellent food as well as the obvious beer.
After Torremolinos in February I wasn't sure that trip could be matched but I have to say that this trip matched that if not surpassed it. I for one will be one of the first on the list for going next year but will instead partake in the half marathon to soak up more of the atmosphere on race day and the run through the city street and who knows I may even try and get myself a free beer. And finally a special mention goes to Mark "Jacket Mon" Lysycia who first advertised the trip to the A&T members and organised the hotel but due to unfortunate and unhappy personal circumstances beyond his control could not make the trip. I can say that he was there in spirit and in our thoughts as he was mentioned on a daily basis whilst we sank a beer or two. Cheers and roll on Palma 2012

CLGP Presentation Night
OK everyone.
Just reminding you about the CLGP presentation at Wigan Rugby Union Club on 18th November. We have 2 team trophies to collect and a number of individual awards as well.
I have had quite a number of affirmative replies already, but I'd really like confirmation from anyone who's not been in touch yet if they are going to attend. Should be a good night and another good turnout from the club will look good.
Cheers
Garry

A&T cross-country Hynburn Saturday 22/10/11 – by Mark Riches
Paul Basnett arrived with the tent despite only landing at Manchester airport in the early hours of Saturday morning & confessed that if it hadn’t been for the tent he would have stayed in bed! However, I am sure he is glad he came because he had another great run but more of that later.
The tent was erected very quickly by Neil Christie & Terry Gardiner then it was time for the 8 A&T ladies to tackle the 4K course (1 x small lap + 1 x large lap)
First A&T lady home (again) was Carole Baines with an excellent 31st position (23.21) Next it was Michaela Shaw (25.59) & 17 seconds later Louise Dobson. Marjorie Leigh was next A&T finisher with another great run (27.23) followed home by Michelle Fairclough (28.08) & Cath Hodgetts (29.32.) Next, making her debut on the country, was Joan Cooke (31.01) followed home by Emma Higgins (31.23) – well done ladies!
Next it was the turn of the 16 A&T men to tackle this challenging course; 1 x small lap + 2 x large laps (10K) this time
Not surprisingly 1st A&T finisher again was Lewis Eccleston with an excellent 22nd position & a time of 36.22. Alex Foster finished 44 seconds behind Lewis & just managed to hold off fast finishing Colin Rigby (37.12)
Next A&T finisher was Simon Ford (38.50) making his 1st outing on the country this year following his excellent 2.50.16 at the Chester marathon a couple of weeks ago. A little further down the field, new member Ian Newcombe was leading the charge along with Jon Hyde. Yours truly (Mark Riches) ran the small lap with Troy Topping, who had also just returned from Majorca, before pulling away on the 1st large lap. I passed Jon towards the end of this lap & passed Ian towards the end of the last lap; I finished in 39.39 followed by Ian (40.28) Jon (41.48) & Troy (42.27) Neil Christie who was making his debut on the country, finished in 43.52 followed by Steve Foster (45.05) Terry Gardiner (45.20) Craig Bradbury (46.10) & Neil Hodgson (47.57) – well done lads. As previously mentioned, Paul Basnett (50.15) had another good run just missing out to fast finishing Ian Hamilton (49.34) with Glyn Thomson (56.34) completing the line-up
We all enjoyed the delights of Brenda’s cafĂ© while discussing the race (hills / mud / tree routes etc.) & again we were one of the last clubs to leave!

Palma 10k and Half Marathon by Steve Coleman
Sunday saw a mix of runs in Palma, a 10k, half marathon and marathon, starting at the same time. The three runs did the same way for the first 9ks the 10k then going to the finnish, a fast course if it had not been so hot and out and back. Troy and Alan H did amazing run in this with Clare and Paul doing well in the heat, 24c already.
The half marathon then went into the city with many a turn and climb, I was hot and had to keep hiding in the shade. Terry, myself and Derek doing good times in the heat and confusing course. Barry went to enjoy, with a couple of confort breaks and talking himself into a free beer en run. Happy with my 1h29, 36s. Beer and social meal with A&T and other running clubs afterwards made for a good day.

Green Drive 5 – 16th October 2011 by Cath Hodgetts
While some of A&T were sunning themselves in Palma, 4 A&Ters went over to Lytham for the Green Drive 5.
We had cloud, threats of rain, cool temperatures and a slight breeze while I am guessing those in Palma had sun, sea, sand and fairly warm (if not hot) temperatures. I know which race I would rather have done!
As I was finding somewhere to park, I saw Mark Lysycia warming up. It was great to see Mark out racing after the couple of weeks that he has had.
I got myself all parked up and, in my usual unorganised way, aimlessly wandered about and finally found the start.
At the start I took up my familiar place, near the back of 350 runners, where I thought I had seen Cheryl Wainwright in a pink A&T shirt. Whilst deliberating if it was Cheryl or not the horn went off to set us off so no time to find out for sure.
There was a slow start for us at the back with a bit of walking rather than the mad pushing and shoving dash that you get at some races. I decided at this point that I had gone a little to close to the back and maybe should have been a bit further forward to give me a good start.
The course is fairly flat, just the odd little gradual slope here and there, barely noticeable really. It’s a good PB course (although not for me this year!). There was part of the route though the park and also some road running with one big loop taking us back to the park.
The race was won by Stuart Stokes of Sale Harriers in a time of 24.09. The first A&Ter to finish was Arnold Melling in 54th position with a time of 32.15, followed by Mark Lysycia in 91st position with 34.41. Next over the finish line was myself (Cath Hodgetts) in 243rd position with a time of 44.44 (5 seconds slower than last year and how I kicked myself for that) followed by Cheryl Wainwright who claimed 283rd position with 47.08 and, I think, knocked nearly 10 minutes of last year’s time. Well done Cheryl, brilliant running.
There weren’t as many A&T there as last year, but I think that we still did the club proud. Well done Arnold, Mark and (again) Cheryl. Great performances from all.

Gin Pit Miners Welfare Club .. Doors Open 7.30 to Late
The next social event is our Xmas Do / Awards Night at the Miners Welfare Club.
This is our main event of the year and we expect the room to be full.
We have printed off 120 tickets which we will be starting to distribute them 'free of charge' amongst our members at the meeting on Sunday 6th November and at the training sessions after that until they have all gone.
Each member will be allowed to bring their partner but due to expected high demand for tickets please only take a ticket if you are definitely coming.
If in the unlikely event that tickets are left over we will blog this at a later date.
This should be a brilliant night and we would obviously like the room to be full and hope everyone will let their hair down to make it a great night!
Smart dress is recommended but not compulsory.

CLGP Trophy Winners 2011
Below is a list of Team and Trophy Winners for the 2011 CLGP season.
The Presentation Evening will be held at Wigan Rugby Union on Friday 18th November at 7.30pm. Admission will be no more than £3 per head.
Can those members who wish to attend please send me an e-mail, FB message or call me when you get the chance, as I have to inform Wigan Phoenix of the numbers so that they can make adequate arrangements for the evening? It should be a good do, giving us a chance to socialise amongst ourselves (not that we need any encouragement to do this) and with our friends and opponents from the CLGP. We also have a few Team and Individual trophies to collect, so celebration is in order.

A&T cross-country LSV Saturday 08/10/11 – by Mark Riches
A magnificent turnout of 35 A&T runners descended on LSV & it would have been an even greater turnout but for Chester marathon the day after; only Coach Moran was brave/daft enough to do both!
We pitched the tent, erected the A&T flag, posed for a few photos & it was soon time for the 13 A&T ladies to tackle the 5K course (1 x small lap + 1 x large lap)
First A&T lady home was Carole Baines with an excellent 33rd position & just dipping under 23 minutes. Just over 1 minute later came Suzanne Gregory (24:18) & Michaela Shaw (24:24). Next was two of a number of 1st timers on the country, Kim O’Neil (tbc) & Louise Dobson (26:31) followed closely by Marjorie Leigh (26:59), who is no stranger to cross-country; Kim is missing from the results & I am looking into this. Just over 1 minute later came Michelle Fairclough (28:07), followed by Bev Tickle (28:39) & Cath Hodgetts (28:46). Next we had another three 1st timers; Jane Eccleston (28:55), Sarah Wood (29:19) & Emma Higgins (29:50), followed by Clare Unsworth (32:46) – well done ladies!
Next it was the turn of the 22 A&T men to tackle the muddy but reasonable flat course; 3 x large laps (10K) this time
Not surprisingly 1st A&T finisher was Lewis Eccleston with an excellent 20th position & a time of 35:17. Colon Rigby finished 27 seconds behind Lewis & Alex Foster finished 35 seconds behind Colin (excellent running by 3 of A&T’s finest.) A little further down the field Alan Hilton was leading the charge with yours truly (Mark Riches) & Scott Christie, who was doing a very passable impression of Bambi due to wearing racing flats, trying in vein to keep up with him. After the 1st lap Scott had slipped (literally!) back & I set off after Alan. It took me just over a lap to catch him & in the end I finished in 37:16 to Alan’s 37:51. Gary Stevens (39:18) & Troy Topping (39:27) were next A&T finishers followed by Jon Hyde (39:47) & Scott Christie (40:06) John Lee, making a welcome return to the country, finished in 41:04 followed by Derek Coop (41:47) Craig Little (42:08) & Terry Gardiner (43:15.) Dale Kenyon out sprinted a very surprise Chorley runner to finish in 43:33 just in front of Craig Bradbury (43:40.) Next it was Steve Foster (44:14) & Neil Hodgson (45:20) followed by Dave Crowe (48:28) & Shaun Moran (48:28) who was using this as a warm-up for the Chester marathon the next day! Paul Basnett continues his improvement with an excellent 49:12 with Barry Allman (53:49) & Glyn Thomson (54:07) completing the line-up
The course was very muddy & we had a few fallers so a brief discussion about length of spikes etc followed before a short warm down followed by the delights of Brenda’s cafĂ©
As always, a good time was had by all & we were one of the last clubs to leave; Joe from Leigh Harriers told me he was considering charging us camping fees!
Next race Saturday 22/10/11 at Hynburn – put it in your diary!
Fell Snippets by Paul Jackson
Lake District Mountain Trail
On the 1st September, Mark Ruscoe took part in the Lake District Mountain Trail this year from Mungrisdale. Mark had a great day out, getting a very respectable 43rd place in 5:08:09 in the classic category.
Rab Mountain Marathon 2011
Over the weekend of 23/24th September, two teams competed in the 5th Rab MM, this time in Snowdonia, based from Bethesda. This was a two-day navigational event over the Carneddau mountain range, carrying all you need for the overnight camp.
Paul Jackson and Mark Ruscoe teamed up for the third successive year, and their “other halves”, Sarah Jackson and Lyndsey Carter, also teamed up.
Paul and Mark had their best placing so far coming on 60th from 297 teams. Sarah and Lynds did exceptionally well in their first full MM, navigating and moving well over some tough ground to finish 225th overall. Well done girls!!
Langdale Horseshoe Fell Race
On Saturday 8th October 2011, Marcus Taylor, Mark Ruscoe and Paul Jackson competed in this 14m/4000’ ascent fell race from the Old Dungeon Ghyll in Langdale valley. It turned out a bit of a nightmare all round for all in the wet, slippy conditions.
Mark was having a storming run until he came across a casualty on Pike o’Blisco who has ripped open his leg and had bone exposed. Mark gave some first aid then ran to get assistance from some walkers nearby who thankfully both turned out to be doctors. Mountain Rescue and ambulance were alerted and the casualty was safely evacuated from the mountains.
Paul and Marcus were both having good strong runs, but both independently of each other, went ‘walkabout in the mist on the Crinkle Crags, before bumping into each other and navigating back to the right track. Paul then took an awful line off the summit of Blisco losing even more time.
In summary, a Lakeland Classic that we managed to turn into an epic.
Carl Bell of Howgill Harriers was the race winner.
Shepherd’s Skyline Fell Race
No A&T attended the Good Shepherd Fell Race due to other commitments. That leaves just the one Grand Prix/Champs race to go which is the Shepherd Skyline Fell Race on the 5th November, at 1pm from the Shepherd’s Rest Inn, Lumbutts Road, Todmorden. This race is 6 miles/1150’ ascent. £5.00 entry on the day.

A&T X-country – by Mark Riches
In my earlier posting on 2nd August, I mentioned that this year we are also proposing to have a second (independent) club champs based on 3 races on the Gin Pit x-country course, which was used for the first time last year & I suggested the following dates
Date (Sunday) League Venue
16/10/11 A&T Gin Pit
06/11/11 A&T Gin Pit
20/11/11 A&T Gin Pit
16/10/11 A&T Gin Pit
06/11/11 A&T Gin Pit
20/11/11 A&T Gin Pit
In view of the rather congested timetable, it has been suggested that I schedule these after Xmas, so revised "provisional" dates below
Date (Sunday) League Venue
22/01/11 A&T Gin Pit
05/02/11 A&T Gin Pit
19/02/11 A&T Gin Pit
05/02/11 A&T Gin Pit
19/02/11 A&T Gin Pit

Thursday Training by Paul Basnett
At training tonight 3 hardcore A&T athletes and myself turned up on a cold, wet and windy evening. After Emma cheekily asked a passer by to take the team photo we were off. Apart from a toilet stop at a passing pub we did well, so well I cheekily suggested (not like me) half way up Hamilton Street that we perhaps run down Millers and back up! *&^* off was the reply. How about a detour to Dougie then? B*ll*cks to that! I won't let drop who made those replies and let you decide. However could have done with the magic glooves tonight as Winter is definitely approaching but was still a good run and enjoyed by all. Well done to the hardcore four. I have to include myself in that as three doesn't rhyme with hardcore. Remember Thursdays are now from Gin Pit at the same time and Tuesday is remaining the same from Atherton Station car park until further notice.

Thursday Training Routes by Paul Basnett
Here is Octobers Thursday training schedule. To try and drum up a bit more support for the Thursday session we are going to be doing training runs from Gin Pit as of next Thursday October 13th until further notice. We'll be meeting as usual at between 6.15 - 6.30 for a 6.30 start. This move is to vary the training runs in an effort to tempt more people to support the session. Also if anyone as any routes they'd like adding, or other possible meeting points or ideas for the future then please let me know. And a big thanks to Matt Crompton for mapping out the various routes from both Atherton Station and Gin Pit. Cheers Paul

Great Cumbrian Run by Steve Coleman
Did the Great Cumbrian half marathon on Sunday, warm and humid, not helped because not reading those instructions they send I parked in the wrong place. Found I had to run to the castle to get chip, run back to get changed, run back to start, sweat, do the race, hilly and then got a stitch at 11 miles so finnished at 1h 32m like last year.
