Eddie's Revenge Fell Race- By Paul Jackso
Middleton Harriers were the hosts for this race which supports and raises money for Deaf/Blind awareness week.
The conditions were great, late evening sunshine and dry underfoot. The race is only a lung bursting 3.8 miles long and is runnable for pretty much the whole route.
The start was fast with it being a short race and 116 competitors took to the surrounding hills. Alot of dust was kicked up drying out throats which would later need quenching in the pub.
Four A&T fell runners turned out to race and the results are as follows;
1st Ben Fish Blackburn Harriers 23.25
12th Mark Ruscoe 28.01
37th Paul Jackson 30.53
48th Marcus Taylor 32.46
110th Tracy Parry 43.38
Janet Grint also ran in her East Cheshire colours coming 62nd in 34.13.
Run of the day goes to Tracy Parry who took 9 minutes off last year's race and had a sprint finish to the line.
Next up in the Grand Prix is Bull Hill Fell Race (5.5m/1100') hosted by Radcliffe AC on Thursday 14th July at 7.30pm from Boardmans farm, Hawkshaw. £3.50 on the day. A reminder will be posted nearer the time.
Social Secretary
Clare has resigned as Social Secretary.
We are now looking to recruit a new member to fill this position. We are looking for someone to suggest and arrange nights/days out for the club whether it be meals out, drinks nights, day trips and also to organise the Halloween and Christmas Do. Clare is very happy to help out with organising these larger events so you wouldn't be on your own for those!
Anyone interested in this position please contact the committee.
In the meantime, if anyone in the club wants to arrange a night out, feel free to contact Gary Stevens who will help blog it for you and spread the word!
The committee would like to thank Clare for all her hard work.

AOB
Next meeting is planned for late September
6 A&T members made the short journey to Amberswood, Wigan to compete in a brand new trail race which was being organized by Springview football club with all proceeds going to help the junior football club, each runner had the choice to run 5k (1 loop) or 10k (2 loops) on the scenic paths and bridleways around a local nature reserve.
Due to lack of Marshall's on the course most of the runners at some point got lost and probably all ran further than expected.
I (Gary Stevens) was first runner home in the 5k 'plus a bit' in a time of approx 20 Min's.
There are no official results but in the 10k Shaun Moran was 4th (40.30 ish) and Suzanne was first lady home just pipping Ian Hamilton. David Crowe was next in followed by Clare Unsworth.
The organizers i think have to make lots of small improvements to take this race to the next level however the A&T members had a great time and had lots of laughs on a glorious day in the sun!

Sotos 10k by Paul Basnett
On Sunday morning 3 A&T members made their way upto Fleetwood for the Sotos 10k. The weather was very warm but at the start of the race I didn't begin to think how warm it would get. Up until about 3.5 miles I was travelling well and went through the first 5k in about 23 minutes. I could also see Nasser at this stage about 2-300 metres ahead of me. It was on the turn for the way back to the finish that things really started to hot up. I thought the Salford 10k was hot but that day was cool compared to today. The sun was beating down on you and with hardly a breath of wind on your back in what felt like a heat trap. I tried hugging the side wall to try and get some shade but this didn't seem to help. At just before 4 miles the oasis of a water station appeared were I stopped to take on water and throw some over me which refreshed me for another mile or so but in reality it was probably a lot less. From then on in I limped home going from walking to slowly running. There were 298 entrants in the race of which Mathew Pierson of Holmfirth Harriers was the overall winner in 31.55. First back for A&T was Nasser Isman-Egal in 99th position with 46.50. Next came myself, with Nasser giving me a most welcome cheer over the finish line in a time of 49.38 and taking 132nd position. And third on the day for A&T was Barry Allman in 179th position with 53.08. It was then try and cool off, which took a couple of hours! Then it was a few of cups of coffeee and a bacon, egg and sausage barm in the cafe across the road from race HQ whilst soaking up the sun. I may not have come away with the time I would have liked but I improved on my tan and it was a good day out. Also next time I should remember to take my racing peak cap!!
Lymm 5k by Paul Basnett
On Saturday afternoon 4 A&T members made there way to the last race of North Cheshire 5k Grand Prix series. Some of you maybe remember this undulating course from last years club champs when it was very hot. Thankfully this year, whilst muggy, the sun was not beating down on us and it had just rained. The race was run by 274 runners with the overall winner being Damian Nicholls of Wilmslow RC in 15.23. First back for A&T once again was Scott Christey in 18.04 taking 30th place. He was again followed home by Colin Kay in 67th place with 19.12 and both were pleased with their times. Next came myself and laying last years poor race to rest with a PB equalling time of 22.14 and 133rd place. Again our only female entrant on the day Bev Tickle ran in her 2nd best time of the series with 27.19. Manchester to Blackpool Bike Ride -10th July 2011
Some of you may know that Garry and I are doing the Manchester to Blackpool bike ride this year on the 10th July. We are doing it in aid of Wigan and Leigh hospice because it’s such a well-deserving charity. Sadly my dad died there earlier this year but I can’t speak highly enough of the care and dedication shown to him or of the peaceful environment that it affords patients and families.
If you could sponsor us, any amount would be gratefully received.
Donations can be made via the following web-site:

Thursday Training by Paul Basnett
This weeks Thursday training session we had a few new faces Jacket Mark, Andy Coates and Mark Crowley, as well the now regular Vanessa Thomson and Steve Underwood. The runs were starting again up Newbrook Road, you know the "easy" run! The 2 Marks and Andy did the Atherton loop whilst the rest of us did to Chequerbent and back. On my way back from the Chequerbent I bumped into Bacon Mon who had turned up slightly late to boost the numbers to a record 7 turnout since I took over the session. Next week I also hope to have a 3-4 mile run planned so those that do not fancy the slog up Newbrook Road or a longer run can come along. Thanks to Matt Crompton for providing the training routes and also thanks to Mark Lysycia for providing this weeks training run picture. Hope to see a few more faces in the coming weeks. Cheers, Paul

A&T/Swinton/Burnden Challenge
A stunning turnout of over 80 runners competed in the first leg of this year’s challenge match with Burnden (not Bolton) making a welcome debut. This level of participation is much higher than many mid-week races which are held at this time of year and shows how all 3 clubs are continuing to develop but also how much they like each other’s company.
Once again we were blessed with the weather as the Gin Pit course was bathed in bright evening sunshine. The 2-loop relay course added to the atmosphere of the event and gave everyone the opportunity to cheer on their colleagues as they passed the start/finish area after the first loop.
There were some great tussles at the head of the field. A &T were the first team home in 28:56 after Burnden had taken an early lead through Steve Nolan with Pete Chan, eyeballs out, desperately trying to catch him. 18-year old Lewis Eccleston’s final leg proved decisive in the end for A&T after Shaun Moran had put them in the lead.
The next 3 teams home were involved in a photo-finish with Burnden (29:34), Swinton (29:36) and Burnden again (29:38) all crossing the line within yards of each other. With A&T teams 2 & 3 finishing 5th and 7th respectively, Swinton kept up the pressure with 6th and 9th placed finishes after Burnden had come in 8th.
Perhaps the race of the night involved A&T and Burnden’s Ladies teams, who proved to be very well matched. With Josie Maley and Jean Mann producing strong runs, A&T’s Carole Baines just sneaked over the line ahead of Burnden’s excellent Izzy Hughes on this occasion but on another night it could easily have gone the other way. For future challenges we should ensure that the Ladies are always grouped together in the same team where possible and award separate prizes for them, such was the intensity in this event.
The newer runners from all three clubs really benefited from the spirit and encouragement given to them by the more experienced competitors and hopefully they will look forward to entering races on a regular basis in future.
On the night, as host club, A&T probably had too much strength in depth and came away with the trophy with Swinton 2nd and Burnden a close 3rd. The result is almost irrelevant and in this case it is the participation in the event which is more important.

A&T v. Swinton v Burnden Challenge Wednesday 22nd June 2011
Wednesday 22nd June sees the 1st Leg of the second A&T/ Swinton/Burnden Challenge Match. A&T will host this first event at Gin Pit - meeting at 6.45pm for the run which will start at 7.30p.m.
This is intended to be a light-hearted, fun challenge and is designed to involve runners of all abilities in all three Clubs.
The competition on this particular evening will be run as a 3-runner per team relay event. The distance covered by each runner equates to approximately 2 miles.
- Runners will be selected into teams of 3 of equal abilities.
- Each time captain will select who runs in each of their teams.
- When the race has been completed, each team will be allocated a race position number i.e. the team finishing first scores 1, the 2nd team scores 2 etc. The club with the lowest number of points wins the challenge.
- If, for example, A&T enter 10 teams and Swinton & Burnden enter 8 teams, only A&T’s best 8 scores will count but if A&T’s team 9 beat Swinton and Burnden’s team 8s, this will be reflected in the scoring.
- A minimum of 5 teams per club is required for scoring the competition. So if one club only fields 4 teams, they will incur a penalty for the non-competing 5th team. This team will take the next position in the field after the last of competing teams.
There is no pressure on anyone to produce spectacular times. It really is a social gathering interspersed with a bit of leisurely running.
If anyone needs more information, please e-mail me on: garrybaines@aol.com

A&T win bronze medal in 5k North of England Champs
ARTICLE WRITTEN BY Northern Athletics - 5k Road Champs 2011
The 2011 Northern Athletics 5k road championship returned to Horwich, for their Festival 5k, held on closed town centre roads, this tough 5k cou
rse is just over 3 lap which this year had the added difficulty of a strong head wind against them on the long straight. From the gun Danny Parkinson (Kendal) took up the running, with Dave Archer,
(Hallamshire) second. Local athlete, Anthony Valentine in 3rd place. Tipton’s Mick Hill was chasing hard to reduce the gap as they completed the first lap.
On the second lap Parkinson and Archer pulled away from a tiring Valentine but as they hit the bell it was still unclear who would prove the stronger on the final lap. As the athletes came into sight of the finish it was Parkinson just ahead of hard chasing Archer, however the climb to the finish took more out of the chasing Dave Archer, leaving Parkinson to win by just 1 second in 15.09 minutes.

Local athlete Anthony Valentine, and you cannot get more local than living on the course, was third 15.27, he headed the 3 man Bolton team into the silver team medal position.
With only two finishers Hallamshire failed to close a team which left the door open for Horwich in the shape of Alastair Murray, Gareth Booth and Dave Hunter to claim the team title. ahead of Bolton ahead of Bolton Anthony Valentine, Andy Parker and Paul Rankin. The third team position was taken by the popular Ashley & Tyldesley Road Runners, Gary Stevens, Stuart Adamson, and Marcus Taylor.
In the women race Nichola Squires (Hallamshire), led through the first lap closely followed by Alexandrea Gosting (Leeds City), with the third Northern Athlete being Amy Talbut (Warrington), some way back..

Derwent Water Open Water Swim - by Clare Unsworth
A few weeks ago, Terry Hughes, Craig Bradbury, myself and my husband, Neil, made our way to Coniston for what would be mine and Neil's first open water swim race. Unfortunately, that race was cancelled at the last minute, Craig and Terry being dragged out of the water 3 laps in, due to dangerous weather conditions!
So, having failed at the first hurdle, our 2nd attempt found us at Derwent Water on an equally wet but thankfully not very windy day!
Terry and Craig were doing the 3.8K (2.4mile) race so went off first at 10am. Neil and I weren't due to get in the water until 12pm and we bumped into Terry and Craig as they'd finished. They both looked tired but really happy and reassured me that the water was nowhere near as cold as the Quays or as choppy as Coniston and that we'd 'love it'!
We made our way down to a pen where we listened to the safety and route instructions and then everyone in the water to swim to the deep water start. The deep water start consisted of the starter boat instructing us all to sing and do actions to 'heads, shoulders, knees and toes' - that's quite difficult whilst treading water 20ft deep but did help to steady the nerves! Then hooter sounded and we were off!
I immediately got kicked in the face by someone which is not something you are used to in road races but apparently is part of the course in the open water! Was quite hard to get going and find your pace with 250 other swimmers around you, there was lots of crashing into each other, people pulling your arms (by accident), kicking you in head, banging into your feet etc etc but fortunately after first 75m the race spread out and it all calmed down a bit.
Neil and I have done a lot of training and have found ourselves within seconds of each other in the pool and during training so it was real Unsworth battle today over who would win - loser has to make tea! Neil shot off ahead of me within seconds of starting and I didn't see him again during whole race - however, it is pretty much impossible to recognise anyone in the mass of black wetsuits, goggles and red swimhats.
The water was lovely, nowhere near as cold as the Quays or 3 Sisters where we've been training and the views were just gorgeous as we swam around the island in the middle of Derwent Water. I found it tough going, swimming in open water means that you often feel like you are swimming and swimming and not making much distance - those buoys just never seemed to get any closer! I was convinced that Neil was way ahead and that once again I was right at the back of the pack and would be one of the last ones in. This was quite disheartening but I kept then thinking 'wow, check me out, swimming in a big lake in the middle of the hills, how great is this?' - soon cheered me up and kept me going!
The finish couldn't have come soon enough for me, it felt much longer than a mile in the pool! I stumbled over the rocks to run over the chip timing matt only to find Neil finishing just a few seconds in front of me! (32 secs to be exact!) Looks like I'm going to be on tea duty for rest of the week! However, was very pleased to find that I was nowhere near the back, nearly 80 still swimmers behind me!
I have been totally exhausted all day, really wiped out BUT I absolutely loved it! It was such a buzz finishing, very exhilarating being out in that beautiful water and I will definitely be doing another one! In fact, Neil and I have already entered Coniston 1 mile race in August for a rematch!

Freckleton Half Marathon by Steve Coleman
Well Freckleton half marathon, after the non stop rain last week of Potters alf marathon I hoped for a less wet race. Got that, but as it was due to start 2 PM thought I could visit a gym first. Wandered into circuts, than found out it was cadio circuts so that was sweaty, followed by body pump. Sulked to the race at 1.12 as been printed to pick up time chip 1 15. Had burger 30 mins before race, ( not good idea ) swinton there in force, should have put red top on. Windy but cold, until start, got hot during race and two stitches made me lose time, did 1 27 27. Came 36th but two ahead of me are down as disqualified. Everyone I spoke to was on a transfer number!
Horwich 5 by Gary Stevens
Three A&T members travelled the short distance to Horwich to compete in the Blue Mantle 5k (formerly carnival 5k)
The open 5k is one of many races during the day which included penny farthings, road bike races, orienteering and running races.
The course itself is 3 loops around the town centre which includes a good 1/3 mile undulating climb on each lap and due to the blustery conditions meant the climb bit was in a pretty strong headwind.
I was first club finisher 17th in 18.30 with Stuart Adamson 23rd in 20.03 just in front of Marcus Taylor 24th 20.27
Unknowingly we got 3rd team but only Marcus was there to receive our medals, i on the other hand was trying to be interviewed ... think the fancy trainers made me look like a proper pro!!
Afterwards the faster lads who clocked in the low 15's all seemed to be complaining of the windy conditions, what we would give to be disappointed with these kind of times!

Horwich - Two Lads Fell race 5.25m/900 ft. 16th June by Marcus Taylor
This event attracted an amazing 210 runners from inside and outside of the County. It demonstrates that the hillside climbs, rocky ground and steep downhills is appealing. Along with Jonathan Hyde, Marjorie Leigh and Michelle Fuller our runners started by The Bridge Pub, opposite Horwich Leisure Centre. The race starts on a narrow road, pass a few cottages with a steady slow trek to Factory Lane. It was a slow start for many as we headed on a narrow track to meet factory Lane, a 3/4 mile very steep road section. I clearly had some quality around me and it was a struggle to keep pace. Jonathan easily came on my shoulder and passed as the hill was climbed, and we headed left then right to meet a forest section. The forest section is slow over tree roots and soft ground, but is a pleasant and interesting trek.
Leaving the forest and most of the climb we entered Wilder's Moor, across the Belmont road on top, then left before the final and short climb to the highest point, Two Lads Monument. I was smiling here, knowing that I was in for a treat on the 2 mile fast downhill. It is fun going down the hillside, but you have to master the effects of gravity. Strength leg training in the gym is beneficial to build confidence and increase speed. Tip of the day!
A really enjoyable evening. Runner of the day has to be Jonathan in 40:00. Marcus 43:06. Marjorie (1st Vet 60) and Michelle in 57:50. Well done and hope to see most at Wednesday's inter-club challenge vs Burnden. Marjorie you have won 'more' vouchers that I brought home and will hand over.
Excellent marshaling by volunteers of Horwich RMI.
Lllandudno Sea Swim by Helen Minshall
Hi A&T members
I wanted to report back to you how much I really enjoyed today’s Lllandudno Sea Swim. It was a really big challenge for me, and one I’d recommend to anyone who wants to try something different. After getting the “Tri” bug recently, I wanted to try an open water swim – it was my first competitive open water swim for 30 years, and it was a fantastic experience! The event was really well organised, into 3 waves of swimmers. The first wave started at 11am. I was in the middle wave, starting at 11.40. This was perfect, as I was able to watch the first wave go out, and see what happened. The sea was really murky and I couldn’t see much, but I was surprised not to feel cold in my new wetsuit. The hardest part of the race was sticking to the course and trying not to get kicked in the face and bashed to a pulp by other swimmers, especially at the start. I was really surprised by my time – 38.44! This was a lot faster than I was expecting, especially in open water. (I’m used to swimming a gentle mile each morning in 40 minutes at David Lloyd…). The only downside was that my wetsuit rubbed my neck so bad that it’s blistered to hell now – I need to get some of that body lube stuff I think! However, I was delighted when I looked at the full results and saw that I was 23rd overall in the women’s event, but I came 3rd in my age group! It’s given me a real lift, and I’ve now entered for the Llandudno Sea Triathlon on 17th July, and the Coniston Lake Swim on 14th August. Bring em on!!! Are any other club members doing these? Helen x

Dunham Massey 5k by Paul Basnett
On Friday evening 5 A&T members took part in the penultimate race of North Cheshire 5k Grand Prix series at Dunham Massey. This venue was the second running in this series and I billed it in my last report that it was a great course for anyone looking to attain a PB. I got to the venue and started to strip down into my racing gear when I opened the boot of my car to realise I had left my bag with my series number and garmin at work! So I quickly made my way to the organisers and explained that I had been a dumb ass and left my number in work. They were very good about it and quickly gave me an emergency number for the race which was aptly 999. They then told me to make sure I sure I did not put it on upside down, which some may think is a more appropriate number for me.
The race itself consisted of 194 runners with the first back being Ian Grime of Newham and Essex Beagles in a time of 15.51. The first back for A&T was Scott Christey in 19th place with 17.43. He was followed home by Colin Kay with 19.02 and 50th position. Next home was Nasser Isman-Egal with a PB time of 21.14 and 91st place. I seem to recall him saying, well shouting, that it had taken him 14 months to get that PB and it was by 3 seconds man. He then proceeded to shout it to all and sundry so you could tell he was very pleased with his time! I came in exactly one minute behind Nasser shaving 2 seconds off my PB with 22.14 and 112th place. Again our only female A&T entrant Bev Tickle ran in with an improvement of almost a minute on the last race on this course in the series.
The last race in the series is next Saturday 25th June at Lymm.

Thursday Training
A big thanks to the 5 A&T members turning up for my first Thursday run as session leader. At least I was not swearing on my own. Would be great to have a few more members turn up in the coming weeks as I can see a little more space for people on the Thursday training run piccy. Cheers Paul

It is with great sadness that I have to anounce the untimely death of Adrian Selby in his early 40's. Adrian ran for Horwich RMI and up until his recent illness was a regular competitor and winner of events. He was well known to a lot of local runners and will be sadly missed. Our thoughts go out to his family, from everyone involved at A&T.
