I've just run round the 10k course and at the moment it's definitely runnable in road shoes, however should it rain much more trail shoes may be the best option. On line entries open till Friday evening, entries will be taken on the day at no extra cost to our CLGP members as agreed.

Urgent Volunteers needed for Tuesday/Thursday
The club are looking for a few volunteers who can assist the committee with the Tuesday / Thursday training.
All that is required is for someone to turn up on a regular basis and tell the other members the routes.
Ideally we would like one volunteer for each distance who can be group leader.
Tuesday night training is switching to the trails meeting at Beefold Lane so the routes will be different, hence why we need volunteers who know the area.
Thursday night will still be on the roads meeting at Atherton Train Station.
All the routes are now blogged if you click on the relevant day on the training days section to the right.
If you are a regular T/T trainer and can help please email Mark Lyscia marklysycia@yahoo.co.uk

Midgley Moor Fell Race (a.k.a. Alex Foster’s Tour of Calderdale) by Paul Jackson
Midgley Moor Fell Race (a.k.a. Alex Foster’s Tour of Calderdale)
On Saturday the second Grand Prix/champs race was held at Midgley near Halifax. A small village with farmland, rolling hills and a cricket pavilion as the registration. The convoy arrived nice and early and even Marcus managed to keep up with us.
This was Jon Hyde’s debut on the fells and he was joined by 9 other A&T on what promised to be a good day for the club.
Most of us went for a warm up near the start line whilst Marcus, Lynds and Michelle polished off the WI’s tea and biscuit stall in the pavillion.
On the hour the start was called, all concern’s over navigation were forgotten as we ran off up the farmer’s field and onto the moors. 124 runners of all abilities.
As the field stretched out Alex Foster, Simon Ford and Mark Ruscoe were in great positions, I was slowing down after my sprint up the first hill, and it wasn’t long before Jon Hyde was past me.
Over Crow Hill then onto the trig point then a more level run over the rough heather on the moorland.
It was about this point that the runners in front of Alex split. One runner went one way, two others went a different way. Safety in numbers thought Alex, and went with the two. Some time later after a detour around the Calder Valley he popped up in front of me! “Bloody Hell, I’m ‘avin a good ‘un” I thought before the penny dropped, but Alex had lost a lot of places and was going to struggle to get back up with the leaders.
Marcus pushed on strongly followed by David Ruscoe and John Foulds all leaving me in their trail. For the girls, Lynds, energised by custard creams, was moving strongly on the hills and making good progress. Michelle was digging in, in only her second fell race.
At the finish, Mark Ruscoe stormed home to finish 10th. When you consider the first two beat the race record, that’s not bad going. Simon came in a very respectable 18th followed by Alex, who was looking at a very good top ten finish before going astray.
Jon Hyde had a great debut run followed by Marcus, David and John Foulds who managed to hold off my kamikaze downhill sprint.
Lynds next powering past a fellow runner in the finisher’s funnel (not cricket lyndsJ) Then Michelle.
Now if Grandstand had been covering the race, Ray Stubbs post race interview immediately after with Michelle would have been something like this:
Ray Stubbs- “Well Michelle, how do think you ran today?”
Michelle- “F***??g H%%l Stubbsy you F%%?g P###k”
Ray Stubbs- “Will we be seeing more of you on the fells soon?”
Michelle- “Will you F@@*** ‘LL”
(Muffled sounds and screams as microphone inserted where sun doesn’t shine).
Having said that, all back in safely, we got back in the cars found a pub and had a pint. Even Michelle said she’d be back for more.
1st Karl Gray V40 Calder Valley 36.39 (new record)
10th Mark Ruscoe 43.27
18th Simon Ford 44.15
33rd Alex Foster 46.54
36th Jon Hyde (V40) 47.10
43rd Marcus Taylor (V40) 49.12
49th David Ruscoe 50.04
51st John Foulds (V50) 50.09
52nd Paul Jackson (V40) 50.10
90th Lyndsey Carter 58.05
115th Michelle Fuller (V40) 1:10.44
Although Mark had a stormer and Jon had a great debut, run of the day goes to Lyndsey Carter, in her first fell race since being carried off Wardle Skyline by the Mountain Rescue.
Thanks to all for a great turnout and all your efforts.
The next Champs race is Wardle Skyline on the 9th April, full details to follow. Pendle Cloughs in May has been swapped for another race later in the year due to a clash.
Anyone thinking of going to Liver Hill on Tuesday will need to make own arrangements as I am not running and might not be able to make it.

Liverpool Half Marathon by Paul Basnett
On the move into British Summer time a few members made their way to the 2011 Liverpool half marathon.
As the seasoned half marathon runner Steve Coleman, well I think it was Steve, was also running it I had arranged the previous week at the St Annes 10 to travel down together as he knew the script for destination parking etc having done it before.
However I was a little take aback when he suggested we should get there a little early which must have been the doing of his alter ego as he's renowed for turning up 10 seconds before gun and sometimes later!
I didn't have the best nights sleep prior to the race wondering whether my alarm clock would work properly, with time going forwards one hour but thankfully it did!
Anyway Steve having picked me up we travelled down the East Lancs to the venue without mishap and found a parking spot fairly close to the start without much bother.
It was walking down to the start the adrenalin started to kicked in and both myself and Steve wanted the little boys room!
No room at the Jurys Inn with a queue the like I had never seen before for the male toilets but I spotted some bushes a bit further up so we went to investigate!
The bushes turned out to be not tall enough and I didn't fancy dropping on my knees for a tinkle but Steve found the Castaway's sail propped up in the middle of Liverpool which was a stoke of luck but I didn't see poor Wilson!
Now we was close to the start and heard over the loud speaker 10 minutes to start! Damn I need to go again!
So a warm up sprint to some advertising hoardings for hopefully the last penny I spend before the race begins.
Then having hurdled the fence, almost injuring myself, to get into the start line and pretty near the front I got chatting to a nice young lady.
She said what time you hoping for? I thought I can't really say what I really wanted so I knocked off a few minutes and said under 1.40 as she retorted around 1.30!
Well I was near the front and I had to give cause for me to be there you understand, HONEST!
I'm not sure whether being near the front was good or bad because I set off a little too hot and did 7.30 for the first mile!
Then thought I had best slow down or I will burn out before half way so settled it down a little but still going at a fairly good pace, well for me!
Soon we were running through Princess Park and Sefton Park were I kept glancing at my Garmin to ensure my pace was there!
I went through 10k in just under 50 minutes which a year or so ago I would have been jumping for joy having got that in a 10k race let alone the mid-point in a longer race and still feeling good!
Then again it was at the 7.5-8.5 mark that my pace started to come off as we climbed out of Sefton Park and unfortunately the 1.45 pacer passed me!
Unperturbed I soldeired on and thankfully a downhill into Otterspool Park was very welcome and I made back some lost time!
Having got back onto the finishing straight at the Waterfront with just over 5k to go I thought how hard can this be, just over 12 laps of the track right!?
Although flat this was the toughest part of the race for me but I was determind to run the half marathon all the way, no stopping, no walking for the first time!
When I'm tired, whether right or wrong, am used to dipping my head and looking directly down at the path in front but the paving pattern was sending me dizzy so I had to look up!
This did not help, I was tired, my legs were tired partially thanks to the fill in instructor at circuit training on Friday evening.
It was then at around the 11.5 mile point that I saw ambulance crew taking care of a runner lying at the side of the road in obvious distress with their eyes rolled into their skull, hope he\she has recovered now and is ok!
The most welcome sight then hit me as I saw was the finish sign and even managed to pick up pace, or I think I did, and finally crossed the line for another PB and feeling better than I did in Blackpool after my last half marathon!
As I was crossing the line the race commentator was calling people in going off their numbers which I thought nothing of at the time
Apparently earlier on in the race Sarah had to cover her chest, or was it her number, as she ran through the finish just so the commentator would not mention her! I think she was maybe a bit shy!?
We got ourselves a medal, a goody bag filled with a t-shirt and healthy snacks which I devoured during the day! I didn't devour the t-shirt though I would if it had been edible!
All in all I'd say this is an event I would do again which is a fairly flat run through various parks and I may pencil this one in again for next year
A&T finishing times, positions from around 6250 finishers are
Sarah Martin 3rd lady! (aka Steve Coleman) 1.25.29 pos 156
Paul Basnett 1.47.17 pos 1533
Cliff Stanley 1.54.39 pos 3560
John Urpi 1.57.45 pos 3807

Belmont "10 Mile Time Trial" Bike Ride Report - by Gary Stevens
An 8.30am start and losing that 1 hour sleep made this bike ride an extra early start but never the less 5 hardy members made it for what is a tough ride by anyones standards.
We made our way to Belmont Road, Astley Village for the start of the 10 mile time trial which continuously climbs for the first 5 miles with a much faster 5 miles finish to the M65 roundabout near Brinscall.
John and Alex did reach speeds of 44mph at one point and averaged around 21mph for the entire ride which is a top quality time for a seasoned cyclist never mind a runner who does a bit of cycling!
Gary A was a bit braver on the downhills and just got the better of yours truly with averages of 18.5 and 18.2 mph respectively with the 'jacket mon' Mark L showing loads of guts to finish next even having time for a unplanned loop of the M65 roundabout.

F.R.A. NAVIGATION WEEKEND by Marcus Taylor
Last Friday a number of Astley & Tyldesley runners headed across to Kettlewell, North Yorkshire, to learn about navigation. Lyndsey, Michelle, Tracy and Birthday ‘boy’ were kitted out with our survival bags. There is a lot to pack and we had to be prepared with warm clothing for full days on the fells. It started with an introduction on the Friday meeting the instructors and everyone was placed in a group of 3/4 to have practice using the map and compass to find points on the Map. 1cm on the map is 250 metres on the ground - that sounds easy!
Saturday morning run 4 miles at a brisk pace through the village then up and down a steep hill. I was very jolly, despite the 6.30 am start, it was a beautiful day and most people were ready. The views looking out on top were fantastic and it’s what I love about the hills. Lyndsey had run hard to cover the ground to the top of the hill. After breakfast we went into our groups and looked over the map to recognise the points to find, and packed this with lunch into our backpacks. It was a full day and my instructor was very clear giving instructions, like orienting your map to follow the point of travel, and getting a bearing on the compass between two points on the map. What? I can hear. It’s not that complicated, first place the compass on the map between the positions of travel. Turn the compass to North on the map and take the bearing 0-360 degrees.
Dinner on the Saturday was an appetizing two course meal. The girls had brought in a cake with a single candle on for desert. After dinner we changed into our night gear on an orienteering exercise at 9.30 pm. thankfully I was paired with an experienced navigator to free my soul to be settled for the pub. We came back to the hostel within 46 minutes and quickly showered. Everyone it seemed turned out for drinks until close.
Sunday we went on a morning run. Then after breakfast all had a 10k solo navigation solo to find 8 cheque points. I took too many risks and did not use the advice to use hand rails – wall etc.
Thanks to all our members. Your commitment to support one another to organize such activity is most appreciated.

Liver Hill Fell Race (BS)- Tue 29th Mar 2011 by Paul Jackson
Liver Hill Fell Race (BS)- Tue 29th Mar 2011
The Harry Aspinall Liver Hill Fell Race is a 5m/800ft out and back fell race from Marl Pits Sports Centre, Rossendale.
This has been a champs race over the past few years as it is a relatively easy race with no kit requirements (although its worthwhile taking a jacket/cagoule after last years deluge) and navigational skills not essential. This year it's just for fun.
The race starts at 6.45 pm so please ensure you give enough time to get through rush hour traffic.
Entry is free! Minimum age:16.

Please sponsor me by Cath Hodgetts
I am doing two sponsored runs this year. I am asking people to pick just one to sponsor.
They are:-
Race for Life which is 10km at Heaton Park on 9th July. A colleague died a only a few short years ago from cancer. He was younger than me, and I will never forget how shocked I was when I found out. I can still remember the last conversation I had with him. My sponsorship page is www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/catherinehodgetts1066
and
I have decided to do the Potters 'Arf Marathon on 12th June for Sue Ryder Care. This was a decision I made recently. My mother-in-laws mum stayed at one of their homes until she passed away last year. Earlier this year was the anniversary and I wanted to do something to honour her and those that work so tirelessly and patiently at the homes. My sponsorship page for Sue Ryder is www.virginmoneygiving.com/catherinehodgetts
All I ask is that you pick just one of the above and give a few pounds, or a few pence if that's all you have spare.
I know times are hard at the moment, and every penny will make me train harder and, as always, I will do my best on the day.
Thanks
Cath Hodgetts

Once all cyclists have completed the time trial we will make our way to Chorley and come home along the A6 to Chequerbent then down the A58 towards Daisy Hill making the ride 40 miles in total.
Those who want to extend the ride are more than welcome.

Club Photo by Clare Unsworth
We thought it would be a nice idea to try and get a new mass club photo to celebrate A & T's 10th anniversary. A new photo to go up in the clubhouse, in the local paper and copies available for anyone who wants them.
We have over 100 members now and while it would be fantastic to get everyone on, that's a fairly impossible task!
However, we think a photo with 30+ members would still look great!
In order to organise the photo and book the photographer, we need to know enough of you will be willing to attend and have your photo taken wearing some A&T kit (if you're not running at GinPit, would be great if you could put a top or jacket on!).
Could you PLEASE let me know asap if you think you will be there or not.

Horwich Bike Ride Report by Gary Stevens
On a damp Sunday morning around 15 bikers made it out for the first club ride of the year which contained a mixture of A&T and our friends at Leigh Premier cycling club.
We cycled to Horwich and did the Ian Hesketh duathlon course as some members fancy giving it a go on Saturday 28th May.
I'm sure everyone who took part would agree its quite a challenge to run 5k / cycle 22k and then run 5k on that course!
Thanks to everyone who took part.
32 miles wasn't enough for some of our more insane members who did extra miles up big hills...they shall remain anonymous!
I will organize another ride next Sunday 27th but then we have the Radcliffe 10k on the 3/4 and the Gin Pit 10/4

St Annes 10 by Paul Basnett
On what was a wet but thankfully not so blustery morning 7 A&T members made their way upto Lytham to compete in the St Annes 10 mile road race.
Some of you maybe remember it from last year with the loops round the car park to start and trying to avoid people and road cones!
Anyway once out of the car park the path ahead was pretty clear and thankfully not half as windy as the last time I visited the same coast for a race!
As I headed up towards the turn at the windmill I first saw Shaun Moran, Alan Hilton, Steve Coleman and John Foulds on there way back to finish and I must say all 4 looked pretty comfortable at that stage.
I just remember thinking to myself wish I could run that fast for that long and still look comfortable! Something to strive for perhaps!?
First back for A&T was once again Shaun Moran (58.27) winning his category and also beating last years impressive time by 25 seconds so well done Shaun.
Next in was the ever improving Alan Hilton (62.46) who knocked almost 5 minutes off his PB gained at Swinton last year.
Then came the seemingly ever present duo at these longer events being Steve Coleman (63.28) and John Foulds (67.51)
I then followed in a little later with yet another PB for the year, and knocking over 8 minutes off it in the process with 79.53. The "T" word works!
Catherine Hodgetts (95.54) who seems to be enjoying her racing ran her PB very close came in next
Completing the A&T line up and with another PB was Helen Minshall (109.14) who dug in well in spite of recent injury problems.
All in all a trip worth taking with Shaun winning his category and 3 PB's. Well done all.

Gin Pit Double Marathon 12th & 13th March 2011
Now that I have gathered all the signs back in from the course, tidied things away, collated all the results and sorted the money out, I can finally sit down to write my report about this event.
We had 28 runners run on the Saturday and 20 on the Sunday. This included 3 from A&T on the Saturday Steve Coleman, Barry Allman and myself. On the Sunday Steve & myself returned for second helpings. We also had other local runners including Colin Wood from Horwich, Duncan Worth from Salford Metropolitan AC and Paul Ruston from Radcliff AC. It was great to see local runners not only running a marathon but 2 in 2 days. We also attracted runners from as far afield as London and Edinburgh. These were a mix Iron Man competitors, 100 marathons club members and runners chasing the goal of 100 marathons.
The Men’s races were both won by Paul Allen from Devon. A clean sweep of the trophies for him, well done Paul! It was interesting to note that the results of the first four places were the same both days, Paul Allen, Steve Coleman, Glen Hatrick and myself. I would like to say a special well done to Steve Coleman for having the guts to enter both days when he hasn’t done anything quite like it before and to come second with such consistent times is utterly brilliant.
The Ladies race was much more interesting albeit with less entries. Day 1 was won comfortably by Angela Ladkin from Leicester in 3 hours 40 minutes and 16 seconds. Day 2 was won by Susan Buckley in 5 hour 11 minutes and 23 seconds but the overall winner for the 2 days was Carol Reed in 9 hours 57 minutes and 55 seconds.
Some A&T Runners ran half the course each day as part of their individual training. It was nice to have you guys and girls along the route for company. I hope you enjoyed meeting the marathon entrants.
Although neither of the following were entered and therefore don’t feature in the official results I would like to mention a couple of A&T runners that did exceptionally well during the event. They had both only planned to only do part of the course. On Saturday, during the run Alex Foster decided to continue on and completed the whole course. He was actually the quickest runner over the 2 days with an unofficial, time of 3 hour 26 minutes and 42 Seconds. This was his first ever marathon, congratulations Alex! On the Sunday Ruffus Bennett ended up doing something similar albeit he didn’t quite get the course right. He was well ahead of me during the race but strangely I finished before him. Ten minutes later he turned up at the finish coming in from the wrong direction. I’m not sure where he went for the last few miles but I am sure he did at least 26 miles and probably a bit further. I’m afraid I have no time for Ruffus’s run but I’m convinced he ran at least a marathon that day.
I would like to thank all the people that volunteered their help before the event and over the two days. Without your help the event wouldn’t have been the success it was. Thanks to Gary Baines & Gary Stevens for holding the fort each day, allowing me to run the event. All the marshals at the water stations, Craig Little, Dan Reason, Paul Collins, Neil Unsworth, Craig Bradbury, Steve Foster, Barry Allman, Simon Ford, Stuart Adamson, Spencer Harrison and especially Suzanne Gregory who did both days at the 22.4 mile point with Dave and their dog Bob. Pasties and drinks in the Kitchen by Yuk-Lam Collins, her sister Han May and Bev Tickle. Photos by Mark Lysycia, Andy Coates and Bill Collins. Special thanks to Clare Unsworth for arranging the Pasta Party at Ruffus’s restaurant. It was a lovely evening great food and company. Clare was also the official time keeper for both days, she stood outside for hours!! A wonderful job Clare, thanks. Thanks to everyone who turned up to support runners over the weekend!
I would also like to pass on thanks from the runners to all the volunteers. I spoke to most of them and all were very complimentary about the event as a whole and the friendliness of everyone.
The event raised £718.03 and my nominated charity is the Brathay Trust, who work with vulnerable and disadvantaged young people to help them improve their lives and find their full potential.
Many runners were saying “see you next year” or asking was the event being held again next year. Even some of Astley & Tyldesley members have shown an interest. I must admit I hadn’t given any thoughts to a next time but with all the enthusiasm and positive feedback the event has generated it is looking more than likely that I’ll be arranging it all over again in 2012.
Thanks Everyone
Malc Collins

Membership update...Mark lysycia
Hi Everyone,
Just a quick update,we had four members started last night Ash and Lisa Eckersley(brother+sister). Whilst we are talking families,Jane Eccleston also joined last night, keeping son Lewis company.
Rachel Atkinson, who trained with us last week, also confirmed she is joining and took away a membership/profile form.
Welcome to the club to the four of you,I'm sure you will all get to know the others very soon.
Three more ladies have said they are also joining.
Thanks to the members who ran with Jane on a 3 mile route devised by Jane. I haven't been to the Tuesday session for a while but it was great to see so many faces, at least 25. There's many more of you we haven't seen down at training for a while whether it be through injury or just having a break from running, hope you don't leave it too long before we see you again.
You will all be able to see any new members joining us and some existing members by checking the membership profile section on the website.
Any questions or suggestions please feel to ring me 07912 481 607 or e-mail me marklysycia@yahoo.co.uk

Bike Ride - Sunday 20th March by Gary Stevens
Over the next couple of months i am organizing a number of bike rides starting this Sunday 20th March.
These rides are geared (pardon the pun) towards our members who are entering duathlons, triathlons and ironman.
We are meeting at Atherton Train Station at 9am prompt and cycling to Horwich lower barn and will all cycle together for "1 loop" of the Ian Hesketh Duathlon course before then doing another "2 loops" at our own speed, and then will cycle back to Atherton together along Chorley New Road / Belmont Road / Newbrook road making the ride 30 miles.
Please bear in mind that this course does involve a couple of tight turns so please be very careful and as always you cycle at your own risk.
Course map is

There will be another ride on Sunday 27th March which will probably be the Belmont Road ride and back..this ride involves a 20 mile time trialing course from Astley Village to the M65 (Brinscall) and back so ideal for anyone who wants to turn on the gas on a undulating course..keep posted to the blog.

A&T cross-country – Beacon Park Skelmersdale 12/03/11 by Mark Riches
We agreed to help out with the organization of this the final fixture. So yours truly Mark Riches my wife Joanne, Terry Gardiner & Troy Topping arrived at Beacon park just before 11:00 am (3 ½ hours before race time)
We were tasked with helping with car parking & we were joined a little later by Steve Foster, Brenda wane & Shaun Moran. Thanks in no small part to our help & the organizational skills of Head Marshall Paul Carroll from Wigan Phoenix, everyone got on & off the car park with the minimum of delay
Following my rallying call on the Blog, 6 A&T ladies set off to tackle 1 x small lap & 1 x large lap (approx 5.9k) which meant twice up the big hill. As usual Brenda was first A&T finisher despite carrying an injury. She has completed all 9 Club Champs x-country races this season – well done Brenda. Next was Michaela Shaw with another good run. Then with the female performance of the day, it was Marjorie Leigh – well done Marjorie. Ruth Ellicott, Michelle Fuller & Mandy Baxendale completed the line up with good strong runs
Next it was the turn of the men, this time 1 x small lap & 2 x large laps (3 times up the big hill). It was advertised as 10k but the runners with Garmins disputed this. Pity as it would have been a massive 10k PB for most of us! Pete Chan, responding to the rallying call & making his debut on the country this season, was first A&T runners from start to finish. Behind Pete there was quite a battle, as usual between yours truly, Troy Gary Stevens & Alan (Ryan) Hilton. Troy & Alan set off quite quick pursued by me & Gary. I pulled away from Gary towards the end of the 1st lap, caught Alan during the 2nd lap & then set off after Troy, who continued to push the pace along. I eventually finished about 25 seconds in front of Troy who had to work extremely hard to hold off Jon Hyde, who had an amazing run (male performance of the day – well done Jon.) like Brenda, Troy has completed all 9 Club Champs races – no mean feat. Next it was Gary who just got the better of Alan. Shaun, who had already run 13 miles that morning pacing the 1st half of the Gin Pit marathon, was next. Steve & Terry completed the line up
We all enjoyed the delight of Brenda’s Café for the last time this season before putting the x-country tent into storage until next year
Well done to everyone who raced on the country this year & hope to see you all, along with some new faces, next year
The final results will be posted on the x-country section of the website
