Noon Stone Fell Race (AM) Sat 26th Feb by Paul Jackson

On Saturday Marcus Taylor and I ventured to Calderdale to run this 9m/2300' fell race organised by Todmorden Harriers. The start was at the Top Brink Inn, Lumbutts near Todmorden which is surrounded by hills and overlooked by the Stoodley Pike monument.
Heavy rain the previous night left us knowing that the ground would be soft but surely not quite as bad as Winter Hill a fortnight ago?
The race started with a steady couple of climbs up Heeley Hill and Coldwell Hill before a left turn which brought the runners back contouring downhill to Mankinholes. A run along a track took us to the start of the long climb up to the monument and as soon as the Pike is reached the ground flattens out and a long descent across the moors to Withens Clough Reservoir, before continuing to climb up onto the open moorland. This is where the rain the previous couple of days took it's toll on you as the peat bogs on the tops made running a bit of a lottery as to how deep in mud you could sink with every step. As soon as you got into a rhythm, you'd be in upto your thigh, having to pull yourself out then start to build a rhythm again, and so the cycle continued until after a seemingly endless slog, past the trig point at Little Holder Stones and down to Warland Reservoir ready for the race home. Well nothing's quite that simple in fell running because as soon as you get to Langfield Edge and you think you are home and dry, the course takes you right back up Jeremy Hill on a steep last climb. That done, nothing left now but to throw yourself down the last two grassy descents towards the finish. This is where you can really pass some of the more cautious runners to improve your placing or where you can be overtaken by other reckless nutters as you tippy toe downhill, the choice is yours. I chose a mix of the two and then raced down the track to the welcome sight of the finish line.
Marcus came home a short time later, suitably covered in mud, having had a similar trod, trod, sink, trod, trod, sink over the moors. He lost his shoe in the mud at one point and lost valuable time dragging it out.
After catching up with the family, time for a wash down/ice bath  in the local stream.
All in all a really good, tough race. Unfortunately missed the pint and chip butties in the pub after but I'll make up for it next time round.

My Great North West Half Marathon‏ by Helen Minshall

Hi A&T members and friends

I did the Great North West Half Marathon today, for the 2nd year running. I didn't get a PB - in fact I was last out of all the A&T runners (nothing unusual there). The sun was shining all the way round, and I enjoyed nearly every minute of the race. I was 20 mins slower than last year, but I ran with a painful groin injury - on Thursday I had to give up on a training run after 3 miles, so this was a real challenge. It took everything I had just to finish the course, and it was a personal triumph for me to be there at all. As someone who runs every day, I've been out of action for the best part of a month as I've tried to get the injury sorted, and it's been totally frustrating, especially as there have been other major stresses in my life recently as well. I came 1103rd out of 1140 runners which is nothing to shout about, but it's still better than the result of my last race, when I came last in the A& T Turkey Trot!!! I must thank my great running buddy, Fiona Saunders, for sticking with me while I've been out of action, and only been able to run slowly, and for listening to me moan on and on............ I'm hoping this will be the start of the climb back up to full fitness. Onwards and upwards!!!

Great North Western Half Marathon by Paul Basnett

Not much of a story to tell.

On a very blustery but thankfully dry Sunday morning 7 A&T runners made there way upto Blackpool for the 21st Great North West Half Marathon.
With a strong wind in your face for almost half the race, including the last 2-3 miles, this made running a little tougher than normal.

Steve Coleman 1.28.37
John Foulds 1.33.34
Steve Eldridge 1.46.53
Paul Basnett 1.52.01 (PB for me whoop)
Ana Quintana 1.57.15
Fiona Saunders 2.11.11
Helen Minshall 2.31.32

Lostock 6 - by Gary Stevens

On a busy day for races the club still turned out in force to support this local 6 mile undulating road race organised by Lostock AC.
The rain and wind greeted us on arrival at Lostock which made conditions far from ideal for runners looking for quick times although the rain did stop in time for the start of the race.

Peter Chan 10th (34.56) and Shaun Moran 11th (35.06) had their usual battle with Pete just coming on top. Another on going battle was the one between myself (Gary Stevens 15th 37.14) and Alan Hilton (19th 37.46), another tit for tat battle but this time i came on top giving the club 4 runners in the first 20 finishers.

John Lee (38.31) continued his return to form with another improved performance.

Mark Lysycia (41.34)  back from a weeks skiing was next with Stuart Adamson (41.52), Derek Coop (46.08), David Crowe (48.51) with his first proper run out since November and Nasser Isman-Ejal (48.01) completing the men's line up..Nasser's showing some improved fitness after some recent appearances in the speed sessions.

The men pushed Horwich RMI all the way for 2nd overall but we came up top in the vets category to win with the team of Pete,Shaun, Alan and John..."well done lads".

Maria Lowe (38.21) once showed her quality even with marathon training in her legs to finish 1st lady with Josie Maley 2nd (40.18), Suzanne Gregory (46.21) and Vanessa Thompson (49.03) all having great runs to  make up the ladies team who came 1st in the team event, fantastic to see and hopefully a sign of things to come.'well done girls'...and especially great to see Suzanne and Vanessa part of a winning team.

Regular racer Cath Hodgetts stuck to the task well to finish in 55mins 24.

London Ultra by Malc Collins

On Sunday 20th Feb I run my first Ultra, the London 50K Ultra.

I stayed at a hotel near Wembley which was also the race finish and on the morning of the race 2 coaches were laid on to take the runners to the start in south London. It was up to us to then us maps to guide us along a route round London called the Capital Ring. The run was much harder than I expected with lots of hills and very muddy paths. Reading the maps and trying not to get lost was also very time consuming.

I can’t complain about the weather it was good conditions for running, 9 degrees, dry, cloudy and fairly calm. I had hoped to complete the race inside 5 hours but finished in 5 hours 8 minutes and 7 seconds. If it had not have been for the mud, hills and navigation I think I would have comfortably achieved my target time, so all in all I’m happy with the time. As it was my first 50km race it is automatically a PB, my first in years!

Two days on and my muscles are aching and sore, no training for a day or two, I’m having an enforced rest. I’ll be quite happy if I never see another Ultra but heck, I said something similar after my first marathon in 1996 and that’s now 37 marathons ago!

CLGP Race Report by Bolton Harriers

Central Lancashire 5K at Leverhulme Park
Sunday 20th February saw Bolton United Harriers & A.C. host the first race of the Central Lancashire Grand Prix series with a new 5K event. With 245 entries, the race featured good representation from all our local CLGP clubs.
The race started on the athletics track at Leverhulme Park , Bolton , in bright but cold conditions. Taking in parkland trails and roads, the route featured a steep downhill section in the first kilometre, paid for with a tough uphill slog in the second. Bolton United Harriers’ Tony Valentine set a strong early pace, closely watched by his junior teammate, Tom Carson. The second half’s flattish terrain led to a dramatic turnabout in the race, as Bolton ’s Marc Tillotson, returning after injury, took the lead with 400m to go. In the Grandstand setting of the athletics track, he powered to the finish line, winning in an impressive 15m 47s. Tony Valentine finished second in 16m 03s and Tom Carson third in 16m 19s.  Bolton UH  won the men’s team prize, Astley & Tyldesley were second and Horwich RMI third.
In the women’s race, Astley & Tyldesley’s Bolton-based Maria Lowe led unchallenged from the start. Her winning time of 18m 57s was followed by Jo Goorney’s 19m 25s and Horwich RMI’s Suzanne Budgett in third (20m 05s). Astley & Tyldesley won the women’s team prize, with a strong performance by Burnden Road Runners placing them second to Bolton ’s third.
The championship is already off to a flyer and the competing clubs will be looking ahead to series’ next race at Smithills Coaching House. The Trotters Five is being staged by Burnden Road Runners on Sunday 6th March.
Organiser Nick Howarth was pleased with morning’s events.

Loughrigg-Silver Howe Fell Race by Paul Jackson

This Sunday I took advantage of a break in the Lakes to run in this 8m/2500' out and back fell race from Ambleside. A cracking run over the snow covered tops of Loughrigg and Silver Howe, and back via a checkpoint at Lily Tarn before the finish in Rothay Park. The snow made the descents very slippy but great fun. Visibility was fine for the race but mist blocked out the views if the surrounding fells.
I finished 32nd in a field of 60 in 1:39 something.

Next Saturday is the Noon Stone Fell Race from Lumbutts, Todmorden. It is a 9m/2300' AM race. Not a champs race but if anyone fancies joining me, give me a shout. Full safety kit required.

Race Report for Liversage Half Marathon 13th Feb‏

I ran Liversage Half Marathon on Sunday 13th February.  I managed to stagger over the finish line with a very respectable (in my opinion) time of 2 hrs 12 mins 28 secs, which I am very pleased with and  I finished 355 out of about 420.  This was my first Half Marathon, so probably not the best choice for my first one (I have been told this several times by various people).

It was a windy and wet day, but that wasn't the worst of it as those of you who have run it will know.  There was a steep hill at around 6 miles and another long but not as steep hill at around 10 miles.  I will admit to having to walk at parts but I knew I would, no shame there.

At around 12 miles my legs wanted to give up but I kept on going.  I wasn't going to let it beat me and give up, no way!  I was going to run over the finish line if it was the last thing I did.  I dug deep and managed to run over the line with only one thought in my head - never again!! (famous last words)

Winter Hill Fell Race 11m/2750’ – By Paul Jackson

This time last year there were 3 A&T runners in this race. This Sunday in far worse conditions there was double that as 6 hardly souls braved the very wet, heavy conditions on Winter Hill for the opening Championship race of the season.
A 200 strong field set off at 10am, and straight into the climb to the stream junction, NE of Rivington Pike (CP1). The ground was very boggy and when you mix that with the tussocky ground it meant it was going to be a very tiring 11 mile run. The next checkpoint is the Shooting Hut, before a slog across Counting Hill to the fence line at the Belmont side of Rivington (CP3). From here it is a long track that takes you to the top of Winter Hill (CP 4) before you are sent back down the north side of the hill to a small knoll at the edge of Rivington Road (CP5). After summiting the knoll it’s straight back up to the trig point on Winter Hill (CP6) the hard way with a direct approach up the steep bank to the summit. Then back down an undulating trod to a bridge on the other side of Noon Hill (CP7). Once there you head across the moors back to the stream junction near the Pike (CP8).  The Pike is in sight from here and you think the end is near, but this was a really hard stretch as the moors were really boggy and every step was energy sapping.
After the stream junction you head to the path for the run in back towards the start. A real sting in the tail long steady climb towards the Chinese gardens before a fast rocky descent to the finish line.
The winner Rob Hope claimed first place after a tremendous battle with Graham Pearce (Both Pudsey & Bramley) to finish an excellent 1:34:50 bearing the conditions in mind.
For A&T first finisher was Simon Ford with a cracking run finishing 15th in what is always a strong field.
Next in was Alex Foster finishing 28th with a great run in his first competitive fell race in A&T colours. Alex showing great potential and will certainly challenge for honours in the Club and Grand Prix Fell Champs this year.
Me next closely followed by David Ruscoe who is getting fitter all the time. It would be great to see more of David on the fells this year leave depending.
John Foulds, no stranger to this race, was next in, great to see you back John. Soon after Marcus came in putting in a great effort despite not feeling the love for the race conditions.
All in all a great day out for our club and a real statement of intent with regards the Grand Prix with Simon and Alex starting the season top two in the Open category. This is very promising with Mark Ruscoe still to return from his broken hand.
I’m sure that we will put in a good challenge on the Vets front too as the season progresses.
Thanks to all for your great effort in a tough start to the season, and particular to those who turned out on a grim day to support us. It was much appreciated.

15th   Simon Ford                 01:46:38
28th   Alex Foster                 01:53:47
85th   Paul Jackson (V40)    02:10:33
98th   David Ruscoe             02:14:40
150th John Foulds (V50)     02:30:20
153rd Marcus Taylor (V40)  02:31:17

Next up is Midgley Moor (AS) on Saturday 26th March, from Booth, Halifax, W.Yorks. This is a 5mile race with 1250’ ascent so it’s good opportunity for anyone wanting to give fell racing a try for the first time. Also it would be great to have some ladies turning out for this event to get our challenge going on all fronts, so c’mon girls, get your fell shoes out and give it a go.

Torremolinos 11.8K Race Report by Mark Lysycia

On Sunday 6th February,Wayne and Denise Babynec,Paul Bassnett,Barry Allman and myself  completed the annual Torremolinos road race.

This year however  was a bit  different  in that the usual half marathon was cancelled and they made the race a 11.8K instead. Not to be deterred from this as we had booked our cheap flights and cheapish  accommodation (£23pp HB per night) months in advance.I also thought a 10am start as opposed to a 9am start, half the usual distance glorious blue skies for three days, early finish  meant we had more relaxation time  soaking up the sun with  more beers!
What I didn't account for was that this was a  seriously tough race. The temperature was 17 degrees at the start and the first km is always  tough. The route was exactly as its always been apart from the organisers took us off the sea front at around 6K and that's when  the fun started .
It was  hill after hill with a lot of runners struggling in the heat. I cannot speak for the rest but I was seriously dehydrated and I can only blame "Mr  Miguel" for that, which started at around 2pm the day before.
Sea,sand, beers(too many before a race!)football on the beach, running up 250 steps(mini race) blue skies, hot sunshine, does not bode well for race preparation which went completely out of the window.
The field was 789 and the organisation was pretty much the same as previous years with the event being professionally videoed, TV crew. large stage with plenty  of trophies. The only difference being the start and finish. No chip timing and I went over the start  line  38 seconds after the gun went off. We reached the finish where we waited at least 2 minutes to proceed to the point where an official took our  number and it was recorded. Up to that point no one had  read our number.
Finishing times are therefore a little out but the times posted on the Spanish web site are
Mark    53.41     242nd
Wayne  57.53     388
Barry     58.16     422
Paul    1.01.53   560
Denise   1.07.11   673
As ever,a brilliant trip and good to share a few drinks abroad with my fellow team members who were great company. Another 21 other club runners from various  Northwest Running clubs also  stayed  at the same hotel. Everyone from all the clubs seemed to get on well and with the weather being as nice as it was, just capped it off nicely.
It was the fifth time in a row for my trip here and I do not see that finishing just yet.
Just over two hours flight time  into  Malaga's newly built terminal, a 200 yard walk to the new train station,4 stops on the train,3 minute walk to the hotel. The best bit is the start of the race is, yes you've guessed it, 2 minutes  away. Happy days!
A lot easier and much less hassle than the majority of local races that we all do in the UK.
There must have been over 50  trophies and three out of the 26 of us picked up trophies.
Certainly one for your diary if you fancy a race abroad
The other good Spanish race is the Palma one in October which is a 10k,Half and full all starting at the same time. Perhaps a club event for 2012?
Pictures of the event  on my face book profile, however, not many race shots i'm afraid! but shots of a different type.

A&T cross-country – Lawson’s Ground Blackpool 12/02/11 by Mark Riches

The tent was already assembled when I arrived & several A&T runners were looking forward to a running on what was a very mild day

Barry Allman was there in his capacity of official photography as he was racing on the fells the next day.

Before the race we had to return the veterans trophy we won last year

Our 2 ladies were the first to tackle the muddy course which consisted of 1 small & 2 large lap (approx 6K) Brenda Wane was first A&T lady finishing 23rd followed just over a couple of minutes later by Michaela Shaw. Both Brenda & Michaela ran really well but, once again, it would have been nice to see 1 or 2 more A&T ladies out there

Next it was the turn of the men, this time 4 large laps (approx. 10K). Before the 11 A&T men set off we noticed a lot of “speedy looking” Southport & Waterloo runners (they must be worried!) Alex Foster had another great run in only his second outing on the country & finishing 1st A&T runner (Simon Ford resting just like Barry before Sunday’s fell race) Next it was Gary Atherton followed home by Shaun Moran who really seems to like this course. Next in with the run of the day was Alan Hilton who saw off the challenge of Troy Topping, Gary Stevens & yours truly (Mark Riches) and he still had time to smile at the camera – see below

I finished 8 seconds behind Alan with Troy 22 seconds behind me. Gary S faded a little on the last lap & finished 36 seconds behind Troy

Next home was Jonathan Hyde followed by Terry Gardiners & Steve Foster, who all ran well. Paul Basnett completed the line up & continues to improve; it’s all that “T” word he has been doing!

The men’s team were still in the running (pardon the pun) for promotion prior to this race (not seen the series to date results yet) & it was Brenda that pointed out that every last one of them gave their all – thanks lads
We were all grateful, once again, for the warm drinks & chocolate supplied by Brenda’s Café after the race
Remember you need to keep your number (& veteran label if appropriate) for the remaining Mid Lancs race - Beacon Park, Skelmersdale 12/03/11

Sunday Runs by Garry Baines

For those not planning to do the marathon training, we're still planning to run the 2nd half of Malc's marathon from Gin Pit on Sunday at 9.30pm. Having experienced the 1st half last Sunday trail shoes may be the best option.
We understand that the "Marathon Man" himself will be making an appearance to guide us round the course.
See you all there.

The next race in this year’s cross-country champs is this Saturday (12th) at Lawson’s Ground, Blackpool
Sat Nav: FY3 9RT
This is a Mid Lancs so you need to wear the same number as Barrow, Blackburn & Burnley
If you did not race at Barrow, Blackburn or Burnley, I will let you have a number on the day
Start times - ladies 2:00 pm & men 2:30 pm
For those of you wanting to travel in convoy please be at Atherton train station ready to leave at 12:30
Important information about parking - I have been asked to communicate the flowing:
“Parking will be on one side of a track that leads off Lawson Road and runs along beside the competition area.  Because of this proximity to runners, car drivers and pedestrians need to be particularly careful and considerate.
The barrier into the area will open at 10:30am.  Those arriving before 10:30 am and after the area is full, will need to park in the residential roads off Lawson Road to the south.
Parking along the track will entail driving in on the left, turning at the point indicated and driving back to the next available space close in to your left hand side.  Please follow the marshal’s instructions.
There will be no parking at the Model Village and please don't use the De Vere Hotel car park.”
Directions & course map are on the website www.midlancs.org.uk

12 & 6 Stage Relays by Garry Baines

The Northern Athletics 12 & 6 Stage Road Relays will take place at Catterick in Yorkshire on 20th March.

I'd like to enter a Male & Female team from A&T. Unfortunately we can't include some members who only recently have become 1st claimers as they have to serve a suspension.

For the Men, I'm initially looking at who is available from a 20-man squad. The final team of 12 will be selected from this squad after the Trotters 5 race on 6th March. For the Ladies, the final team consist of 6 runners.
In the meantime, can each of you let me know if you would or would not be available for this event - a simple yes or no will do.

Thanks
Garry

P.S. For those of you into marathon training, there will be plenty of time to get a longish run in, after you've raced and I will try to accomodate you by putting you in an early leg.

Pennine Bridleway Relay- by Paul Jackson

Pennine Bridleway Relay- by Paul Jackson

Last Sunday saw A&T first ever entry into this 47 mile relay around the Mary Towneley loop of the Pennine Bridleway.
We entered a Mixed team consisting of 5 male 5 female runners, split into pairs to run legs varying in distance from 5.5m to 12.5m.
This event attracts all the top fell running clubs and other renowned road clubs and is very popular.

Leg 1- Jean Mann/Maria Lowe
At the mass 8.30am start from the Fearns Community sports Centre in Waterfoot, Jean and Maria set off on their 8.5 mile/1361’ ascent leg. The leg culminates with a climb from Holme Chapel to Long Causeway road at Blackshaw. Both ran into the change over point having put the club in a very respectable 50th place out of the 101 starters.

Leg 2- Mark Ruscoe/Paul Jackson
Maria handed over the dibber, and off we went on the longest leg of the route, 12.5 mile/1560’ ascent around Gorple and Widdop reservoirs. We had a reasonably strong run and picked off more runners than passed us, despite having being nearly run over by a tractor. We were happy to be running into a chaotic changeover at Callis Bridge to hand over to ….

Leg 3- Craig Little/John Foulds
This leg is 8.5 mile/1570’, so the hilliest of all the legs. Nevertheless, Cragsy and John put in a really strong run, picking off 5 more teams and letting no one past. Cragsy’s bike training paid dividends on the climbs, and John has returned to A&T in fine form ready for this year’s fell season. The final run in is to the Summit pub, Littleborough where the next team were waiting.

Leg 4- Lyndsey Carter/Sarah Jackson
At 5.5 mile/753’ascent, this is the shortest of the legs, but one which some clubs put the ‘racing snakes’ in as it also has the least ascent. So the girls were up against some good athletes. They dug in hard and put in a fantastic effort to get to the hand over at Whitworth Golf Course with the club still in a great position.

Leg 5- Brenda Wane/Marcus Taylor
The final leg is 9.5mile/1390’ ascent , so it’s no easy run-in. Brenda was carrying a niggle, but put that to the back of her mind and ran hard. Marcus’ hill training is paying off too. Both ran in strongly back to the Community Sports centre where we were waiting and was only a matter of time before we were having a ‘team debrief’ in the café over a brew and a hot pie.

Having spoken to all the competitors from A&T, it is clear that was a really worthwhile day out. A cracking event, superbly organised by our Run The Moors friends at Rossendale Harriers.
Considering the quality field of competitors that run in the event, we can all feel proud of our team effort which gave us 50th team out of 101 overall, and the 8th team out of 19 in the Mixed team categories.

Thanks to all who took part for being in the right place at time, with the right kit. Well done to all.
