PROSTAR Trousers to match the club jacket.
We have one pair of the above in x/s which we ordered for Suzanne. They are a little too short for her but i;m sure they will fit someone else. Carole and Brenda wear the x/s and seem perfect for them. if you need a pair to go with your jacket, please e-mail me asap.
We also have a few Prostar club jackets at the old price £26.50. New prices will be £30 which is the cost price to us! This includes the printing and represents great value for a quality jacket which is wind proof and very warm!
The new A+T lightweight running jackets should be with us soon, they are £15 to include printing and £1 extra for your initial/name printed on.
If you require any other club kit please let me know and i will bring it to the AGM on Sunday.

A Double Marathon weekend by Malc Collins
I entered my first Endurance Life Coastal marathon on Saturday in Anglesey. It was a fantastic event, the views along the coast were stunning. I wish I had taken my camera with me. There were high cliffs and quaint little beaches. The run was the hardest run I’ve ever done. Sections were basically fell, some were very undulating trails and some parts were thick heavy mud or water logged fields like the worst bits of a cross country race. The run used every bit of energy out of my body and then at 26 miles I had to climb up Holyhead mountain before descending into the finish. My Garmin read 27.8 miles, a bit long for a marathon, at least you could say I got value for money! Finishing time 5 hours 2 mins 43 secs. The time says it all! If Paul Jackson or Mark Ruscoe read this, these events might really suit you guys. Well done to Bev Tickle for doing her first half here, sorry I missed you. What ever half Bev picks next will definitely be easier.
Anyhow the next morning I drove down to Gloucester to compete in the Gloucester Marathon, my body felt tired but the legs were ok after a bit of stretching. Gloucester is basically a 3 lap course on fairly flat tarmac lanes, which were very welcome after yesterday. The run went well but at 24 miles I seemed to run out of energy but after another runner gave me an energy gel and I got some water from the last water station I got going again to finish in 3 hours 56 mins 7 secs. I’m pleased to have completed another double marathon weekend and still be running the marathon distance in under 4 hours.

Anglesey Coastal Trail Run - 22 Jan 2010 by Bev Tickle
I took part in my first trail run and first half marathon distance on Saturday as part of the Endurance Life Coastal Trail Series in Anglesey. I say 'half' marathon, what they really meant was 14 and a quarter miles...
Despite the fact I am currently hobbling around and unable to get up and down stairs without gritting my teeth while my calf muscles scream their objection, I have to say I did enjoy the experience overall! The event was well organised and everyone along the way was friendly and encouraging. The course itself varied from ankle deep mud, to narrow rocky paths, to flooded fields, to a couple of killer climbs - one of which being in the last 2 miles just to completely sap any remaining scrap of energy - all with a backdrop of amazing coastal views. I expected a time of around 3 hrs 15 mins but completed the course in a time of 3 hrs 39 mins which now gives me something to beat next time! Or I could always attempt the marathon or ultra run options offered...

A&T cross-country – Townley Park Burnley 22/01/11 by Mark Riches
Last year Townley Park was covered in snow, this year there was no snow but it was still very cold
Not only was it my first Club race of the cross-country season but it was also a first outing for our new Club flag – see below
Our 2 ladies were the first to tackle the frozen course which consisted of 1 medium & 1 large lap (approx 6K) Brenda Wane was first A&T lady finishing 28th followed a couple of minutes later by Michaela Shaw. Both Brenda & Michaela ran really well but It would have been nice to see 1 or 2 more A&T ladies out there
Next it was the turn of the men, this time 3 large laps (approx. 10K). 14 A&T men set off with Simon Ford finishing a very respectable 26th Gary Atherton & Alex Foster (debut) had a good battle to finish 2nd & 3rd A&T runner respectively. Meanwhile further down the field Alan Hilton was setting the pace with Gary Stevens, yours truly (Mark Riches) Shaun Moran & Troy Topping in pursuit. During the second lap Shaun & Troy pushed on with Shaun, who had a great run, eventually beating Troy by 40 seconds. Alan, Gary & I had a great battle with me & Gary, who also had a great run, pulling away on the last lap. I finished 14 seconds in front of Gary with Alan 29 seconds behind Gary. Next to finish were Jonathan Hyde & Terry Gardiner followed home by Steve Foster & Mark Lysycia; nice to see Mark turning out on the country. Completing the line-up were Paul Basnett & Barry Allman; the new spikes paid off Paul!
We were all grateful, once again, for the warm drinks & chocolate supplied by Brenda’s Café after the race
Remember you need to keep your number (& veteran label if appropriate) for the remaining Mid Lancs races - next race Lawsons Ground Blackpool 12/02/11

Membership Update..Mark Lysycia
Hi Everyone,
It was good to meet potential new member 17 year old Lewis Eccleston who trained again with us last night. He told me he will bring his membership form next week. I believe he went running again with Gary Atherton and Alex Foster and the feedback I have received is very positive. Anyone who can run with those two must be good(or mad)!!
I collected money from another new member Paul, who used to train with us 18 months ago. He didn't train last night and I never got his surname but will return next week with his form and his profile form.
I have received 13 orders for the new very lightweight training club jacket. See blog and my face book profile for all the details on the new jacket.
We still have over 35 anniversary tops to give out. I brought them ALL to training last night but only two were snatched up on the night.Contrary to rumours I do not offer a personal door to door delivery service.(Joke)Hopefully you all like the new tops.
I promised to myself I wouldn't mention the "P" word again...(profiles) but as we have 61 in so far,34 men,27 ladies. It seems such a shame we cannot try hit the 100 mark...but I will leave that one with you,you know who you are.
Don't forget the AGM next Sunday 30th Jan 8pm at the Welfare Miners Club.
Thanks
Mark

New A+T lightweight Running Jacket by Mark Lysycia
New A+T lightweight Running Jacket.
Hi Everyone,
Over the last few weeks Suzanne and I have been trying out a new lightweight running jacket. The club used to do one but unfortunately the printing didn't last too long on them. They are blue(of course)and come in all sizes, in both men(sizes xs to x/l and Ladies styles(sizes 8 to 16, pictures are enclosed and will also be on face book soon.
These new jackets are very well made and the zips/pockets seem as good as I've seen on other brands. All the committee have seen the jacket and are keen for us to move forward.
The RRP of the new running/training jacket is £30 and printing "Astley and Tyldesley Road Runners" on the front right breast would normally be extra.
However as a special introductory price to our club and for a quantity order we can supply them to all club members for only £15 to include the printing! This is fabulous value for a very lightweight running jacket and also promotes our club. The next batch we order will be slightly more. The existing heavier style A+t jacket which 65 of you already wear are now £30. We still have 2 left at the old price £26.50
If you feel you would like one but not yet please let me know anyway as soon as possible as I wanted to put in an order very soon. We wont hold you to it if you decide you do not want it once ordered but I need to gauge some reaction from the club.
Unlike the other blue club jacket these are to be worn whilst training and feel sure you will be impressed with them.
Any questions feel free to ask myself or Suzanne.
I will NOT be ordering any if I do not get any fairly quick feedback from the club.I can only assume on that basis that no one is interested.
I will be at the club this evening Thursday 20th with the sample jacket and also to give out the rest of the anniversary tops so please let me know if you intend to be there. If anyone wants to collect theirs from my house that's another option.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Just send me a quick reply to marklysycia@yahoo.co.uk

Gin Pit "Marathon" Volunteers Wanted by Malc Collins
Hi everyone at A&T
I think most of you know I’m arranging a Double Marathon event starting and finishing at the Gin Pit on Saturday and Sunday 12th & 13th March 2011. There will be about 25 entrants each day. These range from multiple marathon runners, Ultra runners, Ironman Tri-athletes, including Steve Coleman and myself.
The course is one large loop and consists mainly of the local trails and canal towpaths. I plan the course to be a self guiding race and I will be offering maps and directions to runners at the beginning of the day. I am hoping to get some volunteers to help put signs up round the course and man at least 3 check points.
There are still a few places left if any members fancy a go. You don’t have to do both days. You can do Saturday and have a drink Saturday night or Sunday and be fresh when most of us will be on our second day.
Clare Unsworth has offered to be Social Events Organiser for a Pasta Party arranged for the Saturday night at Ruffus’ Bistro in Leigh. I’m sure Clare will blog & Facebook something when she is ready.
I am looking to build a team to help run the marathon each day. Some A&T members have already offered their services on one or both days but there are several roles that still need filling:
1. Race Day Coordinator.
Andy Coates has offered to do Saturday and Gary Stevens has offered to do Sunday.
To be based at the Gin Pit, oversee the race and any problems that may occur. To keep track on how the runners are doing at each of the check points.
2. Time Keeper.
I suppose this role is self explanatory
Don’t worry its not too hard a job as there will only be around 25 runners per day, spread over a couple of hours. It won’t be as hectic as the Gin Pit 5.
3. A couple of people to help set out the course markers on the trails Friday afternoon would be best, probably someone with a mountain bike and a ruck-sack would be useful.
4. I hope to provide 3 manned (or womanned) water stations along the canal.
At Monton
At Marsland Green Bridge, Astley
At Bamforlong, Platt Bridge
I would also like to make them check points to make sure the runners are OK. Hopefully liaise with the “Race Day Coordinator” when all runners have completed each stage.
5. If possible additional marshals for around the Gin Pit trails and through Astley to the Garrett for the first few miles. I also would like a marshal point in Hindley Green at the 22.25 mile point to guide runners from the road back onto the trails.
My wife, Yuk-Lam is planning on running the kitchen at the Gin Pit to provide hot drinks, pasties and cakes to finishers and any A&T members who are about on the day. I’m sure she would welcome any offers of assistance.
My children are currently offering to help give out the medals but they are only 5 and 8 years old and might change their minds if it’s cold or wet!
Please contact me by any of the following methods if you are able to help in anyway on either day. The more helpers the easier and more fun this special event will be. Also members helping with this event might find it an opportunity to meet some interesting and experienced long distance runners and tri-athletes.
Let’s show what a great marathon event A&T can host!

Grand National by Paul Basnett
As I am supposed to be one the events organisers and not done anything yet I thought I would try and organise a club outing to this years Grand National.
This years Grand National is on Saturday 9th April.
I have been a couple of times myself and thoroughly enjoyed it on both occasions.
The first time was in 2006 where I went in the Tatterstalls Enclosure. It rained that day but in this enclosure there is a big tent full of bars, entertainment and a big screen. Of course you can also watch from the races from the rails close to the finish post. This year this enclosure costs £43 for adults £14 for children.
In 2008 I watched from the Steeplechase Enclosure which is right near the first fence. This area is a lot more basic where they sell cans of beer out of a smaller tent and guys walk round serving beer via a backpack. However I enojoyed it here just as much as the other enclosure as it was baking sunshine so beer and sun made a great combination. Am not sure it would have been as good a day had it rained though as there is not much in the way of shelter. This enclosure cost £19 for adults and children go free.
I thought I would organise the day out for members of the club, friends and family. So really at this stage I am looking for feedback on who is interested and what enclosure they would prefer. Of course I would also need to organise transport upto the event but the transport depends on the numbers interested. If enough people are interested I would need to book by early next month to ensure we get tickets.

Double Trouble Gin Pit Marathon – 12th & 13th March by Garry Baines
Double Trouble Gin Pit Marathon – 12th & 13th March
Malc Collins informs me that pre-entry numbers for this event are encouraging with runners from as far afield as Swansea & Edinburgh already signed up.
As you probably know the event is not marshalled and in order to assist and keep an eye on participants, as well as getting in a bit of distance training for ourselves, a number of A&T members have expressed an interest in running the course in pairs, one runner taking on the first half, then handing over to their partner to complete the course. The handover point will be at Marsden Green Bridge on the canal.
If we can get enough members interested, we can set the first runner from each pair off at different times to ensure, that A&T members are spread throughout the field and within shouting distance of the majority of participants. It’s even been suggested that if interest if high enough, we could organise pacers.
As Malc already got his hands full with the organisation of the race, I have agreed to gauge the interest and to arrange who goes off when and on what date.
Please let me know by e-mail if you’d be interested in helping and if so on which date. This won’t form part of the main race; you won’t be wearing numbers, and should be treated as a training run – what pace you run at is entirely up to you.
Thanks

RAB Mini Mountain Marathon by Lyndsey Carter
RAB Mini Mountain Marathon - 9th January 2011
After a dubious forecast of snow, wind and ice, myself, Sarah Jackson & Mark set off to Derbyshire for the 2nd RAB mini mountain marathon. As with the last mini mountain marathon, there was a 3 hour time limit, with teams receiving the map with the check points marked on once the clock starts and trying to get as many checkpoints as possible and back to the finish within the time. Different check points are worth different values depending on the distance to travel and the navigational difficulty in locating them.
Sarah and I were a team, the event was full so Mark decided to have a good run out over the fells, managing to find us to take some snaps along the way!
The hardest part of these events is getting out of the town in which you start (which can be a bit embarrassing!!) Once we were on the open fell we were off and it wasn’t long before we picked up our first points! In total we collected points at 7 checkpoints, some not so easy to find (underneath a boulder on a steep fell) and others involved scrambling alongside a river to ensure we didn’t miss it!
We only took a few detours, but we soon corrected ourselves (although both detours involved steep hills...our legs were not thanking us!) and we got back on track. No major falls or incidents, just Sarah trying out cow pat as a new facial cream at one stage (talk about multi tasking!)
We were back with 8 minutes to spare (in hindsight we could have gone for another checkpoint on the way back, but we didn’t want to risk it and get points deducted for being late.) We totalled 110 points, coming 133 out of 152 - which we are very pleased with, as we have little navigational experience between us. But the main aim was to have fun and enjoy it - which we definitely did!

Membership update-Mark Lysycia
All,
I am pleased to announce that Andrew Neary who was a second claim runner for our club has now officially resigned from Horwich RMI after giving them 8 good years. We are now in the process of sorting out the paperwork making Andrew a first claim runner for us.
Andrew is not only an outstanding runner but is also a fabulous cyclists and I am delighted that he will be putting all his efforts into Astley and Tyldesley. Andrew is also a bit of a whizz on Apple Mac computers, Iphones and probably most electronic gadgets (which I'm not)!
Mark
