Why the name Bent & Bongs?

Why Bent & Bongs?

In the 17th Century, the town of Atherton was then known as Chowbent, or 'Bent' by locals. This name was used for the area for over 300 yrs. Neighbouring town, Tyldesley is known locally as 'Bongs' after the original name of the town 'Tyldesley Banks', 'banks' referring to the hill upon which the town was established.  In local dialect 'Banks' became corrupted to 'Bongs'. The names 'Bent' and 'Bongs' are still regularly used by locals today.

You may have heard of the Bent & Bongs Beer Festival which is a annual
event where money is raised for local charities and attracts thousands
of drinkers from all over the North West to sample some of the finest home brewed beer. Of course as the finely tuned athletic runners we are, we stay away from alcohol! :)
The course takes in the trails around Astley, Tyldesley, Hindsford, Atherton
and Howe Bridge, well used tracks which are frequented regularly by walkers, horse riders and cyclists and runners! Come and join us and enjoy a run around the area and enjoy these great trails!

We are sure every competitor will enjoy the race.
