On the 1st September, Mark Ruscoe took part in the Lake District Mountain Trail this year from Mungrisdale. Mark had a great day out, getting a very respectable 43rd place in 5:08:09 in the classic category.
Rab Mountain Marathon 2011
Over the weekend of 23/24th September, two teams competed in the 5th Rab MM, this time in Snowdonia, based from Bethesda. This was a two-day navigational event over the Carneddau mountain range, carrying all you need for the overnight camp.
Paul Jackson and Mark Ruscoe teamed up for the third successive year, and their “other halves”, Sarah Jackson and Lyndsey Carter, also teamed up.
Paul and Mark had their best placing so far coming on 60th from 297 teams. Sarah and Lynds did exceptionally well in their first full MM, navigating and moving well over some tough ground to finish 225th overall. Well done girls!!
Langdale Horseshoe Fell Race
On Saturday 8th October 2011, Marcus Taylor, Mark Ruscoe and Paul Jackson competed in this 14m/4000’ ascent fell race from the Old Dungeon Ghyll in Langdale valley. It turned out a bit of a nightmare all round for all in the wet, slippy conditions.
Mark was having a storming run until he came across a casualty on Pike o’Blisco who has ripped open his leg and had bone exposed. Mark gave some first aid then ran to get assistance from some walkers nearby who thankfully both turned out to be doctors. Mountain Rescue and ambulance were alerted and the casualty was safely evacuated from the mountains.
Paul and Marcus were both having good strong runs, but both independently of each other, went ‘walkabout in the mist on the Crinkle Crags, before bumping into each other and navigating back to the right track. Paul then took an awful line off the summit of Blisco losing even more time.
In summary, a Lakeland Classic that we managed to turn into an epic.
Carl Bell of Howgill Harriers was the race winner.
Shepherd’s Skyline Fell Race
No A&T attended the Good Shepherd Fell Race due to other commitments. That leaves just the one Grand Prix/Champs race to go which is the Shepherd Skyline Fell Race on the 5th November, at 1pm from the Shepherd’s Rest Inn, Lumbutts Road, Todmorden. This race is 6 miles/1150’ ascent. £5.00 entry on the day.
