Amberswood “Spooky Woods” 4 Mile Trail Run 30th October 2011 by Cath Hodgetts

I decided that it was time to have a break from cross country and the Amberswood “Spooky Woods” Trail Run sounded like just my thing me being a lover of horrors, thrillers etc. As it turned out this was more cross country than any of the cross country so far this season with all the mud.

The race was due to start at 11 am, but actually started about 15 minutes late. It was a small turn out of around 32 runners. Some were running in fancy dress, skeletons, Dracula, vampires, witches etc. Me? I decided to dazzle people in the sun with my bright A&T top (I am scary enough to look at when I am running as it is without dressing up!).

The start was a bit muddy, but nothing to worry about. We had to go through a field of weeds, nettles and grass to get to the proper trail route.

The actual route itself was two laps in the woods. In places the mud was ankle deep, sloppy and very, very slippery, cold and squelchy (new technical term).

The organisers had put a lot of thought into it and put out pumpkins, graves with trainers hanging off or race numbers. There was music in places and Freddie Kruger turned out to do a bit of marshalling, telling us to run faster (got no arguments off me!).

If this wasn’t enough to contend with there was also slippery logs across the path and some wooden bridges which were slippery, made worse by my muddy trail shoes.

I finished in 38 mins 36 seconds, 15th overall and 4th out of 14 women, which I am happy with considering all the mud and having various monsters after me and Freddie out there too. At the end of the race everyone got a plate of Pie and Peas.
Anyone who is thinking of this next year who wants to have a bit of fun, doesn’t mind getting covered in mud and fancies a laugh then go for it. It’s a small but fun and very friendly race, seems to be well organised, despite the late start.
