RAB Mini Mountain Marathon - 9th January 2011
After a dubious forecast of snow, wind and ice, myself, Sarah Jackson & Mark set off to Derbyshire for the 2nd RAB mini mountain marathon. As with the last mini mountain marathon, there was a 3 hour time limit, with teams receiving the map with the check points marked on once the clock starts and trying to get as many checkpoints as possible and back to the finish within the time. Different check points are worth different values depending on the distance to travel and the navigational difficulty in locating them.
Sarah and I were a team, the event was full so Mark decided to have a good run out over the fells, managing to find us to take some snaps along the way!
The hardest part of these events is getting out of the town in which you start (which can be a bit embarrassing!!) Once we were on the open fell we were off and it wasn’t long before we picked up our first points! In total we collected points at 7 checkpoints, some not so easy to find (underneath a boulder on a steep fell) and others involved scrambling alongside a river to ensure we didn’t miss it!
We only took a few detours, but we soon corrected ourselves (although both detours involved steep hills...our legs were not thanking us!) and we got back on track. No major falls or incidents, just Sarah trying out cow pat as a new facial cream at one stage (talk about multi tasking!)
We were back with 8 minutes to spare (in hindsight we could have gone for another checkpoint on the way back, but we didn’t want to risk it and get points deducted for being late.) We totalled 110 points, coming 133 out of 152 - which we are very pleased with, as we have little navigational experience between us. But the main aim was to have fun and enjoy it - which we definitely did!
