Marathon Training by Michaela Shaw

Hi everyone

Matt Crompton has kindly organised some longer weekend runs for all the spring Marathon hopefuls (shown on the blog). Starting early January, Carole and I will be increasing our Tuesday and Thursday runs.  Tuesdays will be 8-9 miles and 10 miles on Thursdays, gradually pushing Thursdays run to 13 miles and using it as the mid week long run.  We will be looking to start at 6:15pm prompt to finish at a similar time to the main group. You don’t have to be doing a marathon to take part, if you just fancy a longer run come along.

I wasn’t training for a marathon this year but I tagged along with the Marathon group (obviously I missed out on the 18-21 milers!).  I really enjoyed the good crack, enthusiasm, motivation and determination of the Marathon group and those who completed Blackpool Marathon, London Marathon and Edinburgh Marathon did fantastic times.  It made me proud to be part of Astley and Tyldesley Road Runners.

I hope to see a welcome return of Matt at A&T soon.

Cheers
Michaela

Turkey Trot Results

Well done to everyone who took part in today's Turkey Trot.

Due to the trails being frozen we switched the course to 6 laps of the large field plus a bit of trail around the speedway track.

The course measured 2.95 miles but with the grass and surface water i think you can safely call it a good 3 miler!!

Some fantastic performances below but I'd like to say 'well done' to Mark Riches on his first race for over 6 months and great to see him back.

It was also good to see some new faces at the club who we hope will one day join the club.

Anniversary tops

Hi Everyone,
I am pleased to announce that the 10 year anniversary tops arrived  a few days ago. As we were planning to give them  out at the AGM 30th January it would make sense to give them out immediately. The new top is  part of the 10 year anniversary celebrations/renewal fee for the 2011/2012 season. As we have not set  the 2011/2012 fees until the AGM, anyone who wants their top straight away can do so and pay £5. when the fees are set at the end of January, the £5 you pay now will be deducted from your annual fee.
If anyone is keen to get their tops please e-mail me asap. I am planning to be at the GP Turkey Trot for around 10.30am , not to run(had man flu since the 22nd)and would like to give out as many as possible.
I am also available today from 5.30- 6.30- pm if anyone wants to come to my house to collect theirs.
Thanks
Mark

Membership Update.

On behalf of A+T, I would like to welcome to the club Elizabeth Swart who joined us last week. Thanks

Mark.

Whinberry Naze Fell Race - BS (4 miles/ 750 feet ascent) by Mark Ruscoe

Boxing Day sees the annual running of the Whinberry Naze fell race from Marl Pitts sports centre in Rawtenstall.
This is a race like no other as those who took part in last years event will testify. Often thick with snow, but with a great atmosphere as competitors don fancy dress, in such forms as last year’s Amy Winehouse, Freddie Kruger, Borat and lots of men in drag (you know who you are!!) With a classification of BS, it is a relatively short and not too steep race that anyone at the club could complete and with free chocolates handed out at the top by Santa to tempt you, there’s no excuse! Having said this, it is a race run under FRA rules and especially with the current weather basic kit requirements will be wise and possibly compulsory (full body cover a condition of last year’s entry) - see the fell section for details.

The race costs £3 and starts at 1130, a 10 minute walk from registration at Marl Pitts sports centre, Newchurch road, Rawtenstsall, Rossendale, BB4 7SN.

Xmas Runs

We are meeting on Sunday 26th at 9.30am at the Gin Pit for Shaun's 10 miler and also
Monday 27th for Carole's 8 miler.

Lets see good turn outs and work off those xmas calories!

Blog

The blog is currently having its yearly xmas makeover so there may be some disruption over the next few days as i work on it.

Turkey Trot - Wednesday 29th December

Final call for all Turkey Trotters!

So far i have 20 names down via email and facebook

I have decided to change the distance from 4 miles to 5k to help some of the newer runners to the club who might find 4 miles a bit of a challenge.

If you still want to take part I'd appreciate it if you can email me prior so i can sort out your handicap.

If you have told me your are taking part and no longer wish to do so again please email me so i can cancel you off.

All we ask is each runner bring a gift i/e bottle, chocolates etc for the prize raffle afterwards, if you fail to bring a prize i can not put you in the raffle...

I will blog all the starters and handicap times here on the blog around the 27th December.

If there is any of our members who would like to help out I'd appreciate a timekeeper, failing that I'll drag Mrs S out of bed!!

Cheers, Gary    (stevensgary@hotmail.com)

Message from Mark Lysycia

I just wanted to say a massive thanks to all of you  for making Saturday such a memorable evening. I think it is fair to say we all had a great time and well done to Gary Stevens and Clare for working behind the scenes to pull it off.
Both Clare and myself are absolutely chuffed to bits to have won the 'Spirit of A&T Award' and a big well done to all the other winners of the club awards! Pictures of all the winners are on the blog!
I also wanted to acknowledge other members of A+T whom without their help and support, the club would  not function as well:
Shaun Moran  for his coaching, encouragement and support to many members.
I know that Clare and Emma would like to say a special thanks to John Lee for giving up his own runs at training to get them round many a hard efforts session!
Simon Ford for helping early in the year with the coaching on the track
Matt Crompton for his help is organizing marathon training early in the year and planning the Tuesday/Thursday routes.
Suzanne for helping me in selling the club kit, she often asks when am I next on holiday so she can "get a break"..she isn't joking!
Andrew and Michelle Coates, even though Michelle is  not a member she still "mucks in" and it's very much appreciated. They gave out over a hundred pasties on Saturday!
Terry Gardiner for doing an excellent job on  the A+T web site.
Brenda for organising "Brenda's Cafe"
Gary Stevens, who  does a remarkable job in dealing with the blog, which is commented on by everyone, he also organises all the club races....and much much  more!
Last but not least, the rest of the committee, Garry Baines,Malcolm Collins,Mark Riches,Paul Jackson,Pete Chan.
These roles require more time and effort than I'm sure many people realise. I'm sure there are more I have not mentioned but you know who you are.
A club cannot run by itself so the more help and support from members we have, the smoother the running!
Despite the slight knock back at the start of this year where we lost a few members to another running club, A&T seems to be going from strength to strength,  we've got a great team spirit going and the support for each other within the club is something we should be very proud of!
Pictures from Saturday are filtering their way to the web site and face book. We had several photographers that night(keeping me company)so hopefully, they will be on the web site photo section in due course.
On behalf of the committee I  hope everyone in the club have a great Christmas and keep up the training!
Thanks
Mark

Tuesday Training

Tuesday training is still on.

There is a 5 mile or 7 mile route planned.

As ever its at your own risk.

A&T cross-country – Witton Park, Blackburn 18/12/10 by Mark Riches

This was the second visit to Witton Park this season as there was also a Mid Lancs race here in November. However, it was a very different Witton Park due to heavy snow fall overnight. It fact I only got confirmation that the race was going ahead as planned after a course inspection at 08:30 am
Most people chose not to travel due to the treacherous driving conditions but  4 intrepid A&T runners did brave the elements – see below

Brenda continued in her rich vein of form finishing an excellent 11th overall & 5th veteran. As this was the last Red Rose race the series results have also been published & Brenda finished 3rd in the veterans category. Red Rose presentation night is Friday 11 February 2011 (date for the diary)
Next it was the turn of the men with Simon leading home the A&T men with an excellent 13th place. Next it was Troy, who complained about the slippery conditions every time he passed me & it was 4 laps! Terry Hughes completed the line-up with another good run, which takes him into 3rd pace in the veteran category in the Club Champs with 3 races to go
Following the cancellation of the Bolton fixture on 04/12/10, it is now up to the best 5 races to count in the Club Champs & latest standings are on the X-country section of the website

Monday / Wednesday Training

Tonights session is off due to snow and Wednesday will also be off unless the weather improves dramatically.

It is considered dangerous to do speedwork
