Membership update...Mark Lysycia
Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to keep you all informed of our recent new members and other items.
Bev Tickle
Vanessa Marsden
Ana Quintana
Marjorie Leigh..... e-mailed me 2 weeks ago to say she is rejoining us. Another member not been down for long time. Be good to see you back on the scene Marjorie.
Janet Grint
Jodie Wagstaff has told me she will re join in the new year.
Sean Roocroft
Alex Foster
John Foulds telephoned me last night to say he would be re joining us this week. That's great news and be good to see John back with A+T.
This brings our total members to 107 which is 42 ladies and 65 men.
No one else has yet requested a club jacket(despite the Arctic weather) and the trousers to match. 65 members now have the jackets so the rest who have not please let me know as soon as you can. They will take 3 weeks approximately to come in then get printed. The extra small trousers are expected early January. They are super jackets, hence the 65 sales, cost £30, trousers cost £17.50. That's your crimbo presents sorted! (Hope Pete Chan see this!)
New Anniversary tops have been ordered and I have ordered the colour and size you all specified.
It wouldn't be me if I did not mention member profiles again. We are getting there,55 in so far, 31 men,24 ladies, so over the halfway mark.
I was thinking of making a start to increase this and try to get to the 80th mark by Xmas. Most of us have pictures taken at various events and races where pictures are taken from numerous sources, I would try to get the pictures of the ones still to go on and put them on the profile section. We can add the times, goals, interests etc another time. HOWEVER,if anyone would object to this, just e-mail me and we will not put a picture on the blog if you do not want us to.
Clare will chase the remaining ladies and I will do the same with the men.
Thanks
Mark

Benidorm Half Marathon by Maria Lowe
Im reporting live from Benidorm had a great run,the weather was just like being back in the UK, pouring with rain and windy, but really enjoyed it.After setting off at 6pm in the evening and hijacked with fireworks at the start 2000 runners set off running through flooded streets, I caught two femles at 5k and just ran hard back to finish 2nd place, After standing around wrapped up in tin foil looking like a baked potato, we eventually had the presentation..
It was such a great feeling to go up at the presentation and stand on the podium, bet they thought i was a pixie compared to the other athletes.
The trophy is awesome im going to look like ive won the Champions League bringing it back home! Look forward to seeing everyone at the christmas do, keep running x
Sunday 5th December - 3rd Duathlon
After studying the 7 day weather forecast we have decided to cancel the 3rd race of the duathlon series as we feel it would be dangerous to do the bike...better to do it now rather than the last minute so people can organize to do something else.
We will take your fastest time from race 1 or race 2 as your overall finishing time.
We will distribute the prizes at our awards night on 18/12/10.
We will organize another 'free of charge' duathlon early next year once the weather approves.
Sorry to anyone who was planning to race but we can't beat the weather.
Any problems please email me.
Gary

A&T x-country – Liverpool 27 November 2010 by Mark Riches
The second Mid Lancs race was also the first McCain Cross Challenge race, which incorporated the European Cross Country Trials so there were a lot of class athletes on show like Andy Vernon pictured above who won the senior men’s race
A&T managed to turnout 14 runners despite the freezing temperatures. However, only 13 of them managed to finish
5 of our 6 ladies set off at 13:20 to tackle 1 small & 2 large laps (8.1k). Amanda didn’t make it & joined in just as the leaders completed the small lap (I will make a manual adjustment to the Club Champs results!) Our ladies all did themselves proud in a very strong field. Josie Maley (34.56) was first A&T lady (just inside the top 100) with Amanda (35.55) 1 minute behind having joined in part way through. Brenda Wane (37.25), who currently leads the veteran standings in the Club Champs, was next followed just under 2 minutes later by Michaela Shaw (38.59). Michelle Fuller (43.27) & Abbie Eckersley (44.05) finished strongly completing the line-up
No sooner had she finished, Brenda was heading home to go swimming! Where does she get the energy?
Next it was the turn of the men with 3 large laps (9.8k); first A&T finisher (as usual) was Simon Ford (36.05) with another impressive run. Gary Atherton (37.32), in his debut season on the country, finished next with another good run. Troy Topping (38.12) was next A&T finisher despite ‘misplacing’ the envelope containing his number & timing chip in the 20 minutes since I gave it to him & having to stop at the registration desk on his way to the start to get another number! Gary Stevens (40.32) & Jonathan Hyde (40.33) had a terrific battle. Terry Gardiner (41.04) & Steve Foster (44.14) both ran well
Next race Leverhulme Park, Bolton Saturday 4th December – see you all there
Wesham 10k by Paul Basnett
On what was a sunny but freezing Saturday morning 6 hardy A&T runners, oh and myself, turned out for the 25th Wesham 10k. However a few of us did not manage to make the start by getting lost on route. For my part I can only thank the unnamed lady in the butchers shop and the very well sign posted roads saying Wesham 10k this way! Perhaps I should invest in a better memory, as I forgot to bring the instructions, or failing that a SatNav. Anyway having collected our number and timing chip we did our customary good luck handshakes before being guided to the start. The course was undulating but no hills steep or long enough to really eat into your energy. First home for A&T was the ever consistent Shaun Moran in a time I can only dream of being 35.57. Followed in second by John Lee 41.43 who was closely followed by Garry Baines in 42.46 with Mark Lysycia, back from injury, in 42.57. Next came Carol Baines doing her first run in a number of weeks after illness in 47.34 followed by myself in 50.08, which I was pleased with considering the lack of "T" word over the last few weeks! Finally, but by no means least, was Laura Babynec who came in with what I believe is a PB time of 52.45. At one point I thought she was going to kill me as she ran past me at the half mile point. A nice 25th Anniversary running top came with the run and this is certainly a race pencilled in for my calender next year. Some pictures to follow courtesy of cameraman Mark Lysycia.Monday Track Session
Monday's track session is 8 x 800 Mtr's @ 5-10k pace with 90 seconds recovery.
I am in Birmingham but hope to be back.

Marls Pits X-Country Report
15 members turned up to compete in the latest installment of this year's x-country season which was the notorious Marls Pits course at Rossendale, and with all the recent rain the conditions where as tough as it gets.
In the ladies race Brenda Wane showed her quality on the tough terrain as she finished 1st lady with Josie Maley who fell a number of times finishing 2nd with Michaela Shaw 3rd. Mandy Baxendale 4th just finished in front of Michelle Fuller 5th.
Simon Ford took to the course like a duck to water to storm home 1st male A&T finisher with Gary Atherton 2nd winning his weekly battle with Troy Topping 3rd. Alan Hilton 4th just beat me (Gary Stevens) 5th on a photo finish with John Hyde 6th, Terry Hughes 7th, Terry G 8th and Steve Foster 9th.
'Run of the day' (for all the wrong reasons) was Shaun Moran 10th who somehow managed to get round the course still hungover from his 12 pints (YES 12 PINTS) session at the CLGP presentation night.

Mini Mountain Marathon by Lyndsey Carter
Mini Mountain Marathon
6 months ago when my training was going well, I decided to book onto my 1st mini Mountain Marathon, and roped Mark into being my team mate (lucky mark!). Unfortunately since then my training went downhill due to injury, but decided to just go for it, using it more as navigational training with a lot of walking and maybe a tiny bit of running!!! Famous last words!
Mark had given me one basic lesson in navigation and map reading the week before, so I had a vague idea of which way round to hold a map and take a bearing, no problem (!)
The venue was Edale, which was a beautiful little village in Derbyshire, it was a dry crisp morning and I was feeling raring to go! The event was made up of teams and solo’s and the aim was to visit as many check points in 3 hours, collecting points, the harder checkpoints are worth more scores.
We got registered, put my fell shoes on for the 1st time in 7 months, checked our ‘dibbers’ in the start point and off we went. Well not quite, we had a look at the map, worked out which check points would be easy enough for me to get with fitness and injury still playing a part. Before we knew it we were going for ones we hadn’t originally planned on, getting a bit caught up in the competition (maybe mark more than me!)
The time passed so quick, not to many mishaps, just a couple of comedy falls by me ( I look up to find mark laughing his head off!) went over on the ankle a few too many times, so was a bit wary after that. Time was ticking and we were at the top of a fell with quite a way to go with 10 minutes left on the clock – uh oh! So we legged it down, staying on my feet and just tried to keep moving. If you are late back you get points taken off you, so the sooner we got back the better, we got checked at the finish in 3.02.05, so we were deducted 3 points.
Our total points was 147, and we came 66th out of 143. I loved every minute of it, and surprised myself at how well we did, but I think that’s down to Mark’s navigation, I was tired on the second half, so mark took over navigation and I kept moving in the right direction.
I can’t wait for January for the next one!
10 Year Anniversary Commemorative T-Shirts
To commemorate our '10 Year Anniversary' in 2011 we have decided to buy 100 quality long sleeve running tops worth £14.99.
The committee would like to offer these t-shirts as part of your 2011 renewal subject to the members agreeing to raise subscriptions at the AGM, however if this raise cannot be agreed we will sell them for £5.00 each.
It is important to email Mark Lysycia marklysycia@yahoo.co.uk asap with your size (S,M,L,XL for men and 8,10,12,14 and 16 for ladies) and colour preference (black, blue or pink)
Mark would like to order next Monday 22nd November and will post some pictures on the blog later this week showing the different colours available.
If you fail to email Mark he will have to guess your size and colour preference.

Tour of Pendle Fell Race (AL)- Sat 13th November by Paul Jackson
Tour of Pendle Fell Race (AL)- Sat 13th November
This race was without doubt the toughest of the A&T fell champs this year. It is 16.8 miles and 4850' ascent in conditions that ranged from sunshine to drizzle to hailstone.
Although many believe it to be a contrived route over the Pendle Hills, it is a cracking event with at least three brutal climbs and a downhill nicknamed 'Geronimo' because of the steepness and speed you can run (tumble) down!
Me, Mark Ruscoe and Marcus Taylor were the A&T contenders in what was the final race of our fell champs.
Regardless of how tough it is, it is thoroughly enjoyable and if the mist clears, offers some great views of the Pennine Moors.
The three toughest climbs are in the last third of the race, so the creator obviously had a sense of humour.
Mark was first blue vest back in about 03:07, a quicker time than last year. Me next in just under 03:40, which was over an hour better than last year when I 'died' half way round, and Marcus next in around 03:50 which was an excellent effort in his first Long fell race.
Marcus has completed 9 of the 10 club races this year and has been a great competitor. He will definately be one to watch next year. Thanks Marcus for your contribution to the champs this year!
The final A&T Fell Championships Table is attached, please take time out to see the efforts everyone has put in. Thanks to everyone who has come along and given it a go and Well Done! to our 2010 Fell Champions, Mark Ruscoe and Tracy Parry.
Witton Park X-Country - Saturday 13th November by Gary S
17 turned up for the latest installment of the x-country season at Witton Park, Blackburn. On arrival it was clear that the conditions were going to make this a right slog and to top it off they included the tea spoon to go along with the notorious saucer! which meant 4 big climbs for the ladies and 8 for the blokes...
In the ladies race Brenda Wane was 1st finisher for us with Micheala Shaw and Mandy Baxendale, the race itself was won by Great Britain International Hattie Dean.
Simon Ford was 1st finisher in the men's race, next was Gary Atherton just edging out Troy Topping. Shaun Moran came through the field to finish strong with Gary Stevens winning his tussle with Gary Cassidy.
Alan Hilton, John Hyde, Craig Little, Terry G, Steve Foster, Terry Hughes and Craig Bradbury all stuck to the task well with Barry Allman bringing the team home.
In the words of Fred Norris this was a proper x-country...like the old days!

Update from 'Marathon Mon'!
I bet you all thought i had been resting!
Well no, on 30th Oct I ran the Snowdonia marathon.
The weather was pretty awful, lots of rain and a bit of hail but the scenery was still very nice.
No chance of getting a PB on this very hilly course, unless it is your first marathon!
I would recommend this race to anyone that likes a challenging course, lovely scenery but do expect rain.
I finished in 3 hours 45 mins 22 secs.
On Sunday 7th November I had a very early start to get to the Rutland Water marathon (which is the other side of Leicester) for a 9am start.
The race is set round the reservoir of Rutland Water. It reminded me of a very large Pennington Flash.
It was very picturesque with the tree’s autumn colours. There were lots of little undulations that made it not the easiest of courses.
The weather was cold but the sun shone most of the time.
I finished in 3 hours 31 mins 46 secs.
More on my blog if you are interested
Keep on running

HELL UP NORTH by Tracy Parry
This morning I discovered the delights of the 'Hell Up North' run in Delamere Forest. Having completed my first season of local fell runs and the Rivington Half Marathon I thought I would be well prepared! Hell Up North is different. After the first hill the route took us into the forest. There were winding tracks, lots of ups and downs then I went through the first bog and got stuck in the deep mud (temporarily). The next bog was even deeper with mud/sludge up to my waist. Then came the 'Hills of Hell' which took you up and down nearly vertical slopes (thanks to the fellow runner who gave me a gentle push up at one poin)t. Then came the 'Bog of Doom' which every one should experience at least once. Having completed the 10 mile route (it is not measured accurately) in 2 hours, got muddy from head-to-toe and a few bruises I will definitely be entering in 2011. A definite date in the calendar for any mud/thrill seekers.
Thank you
Tracy.
Thank you
Tracy.

Though the Villages by Maria Lowe
Hi everyone, had a great race this morning, came 2nd at "Through the villages" very hilly 8.75 miles, lovely weather too. Really good turn out, great to race well, especially when i've struggled with a virus for a few weeks, so people dont get too negative when you race badly, as every good race makes up for it!!!

Heaton Park Run by Paul Basnett
As there was no cross country this weekend I thought I would do the Heaton Park run accompanied by Christine Farnworth.
We thought we wasn't going to make the run at first as there was an accident on the M62 and then I took a wrong turn!
Anyway got to Heaton Park car park for 8.59 and the race started at 9.00 so we had to do an enforced warm up (I don't normally do em!)
The warm up entailed doing a Wednesday night half mile effort like run!
Christine kept up and even managed to question whether we needed to sprint so she was not too much out of breath!
That got me worried that she'll be another one killing me in races soon!
Turns out we got lucky as the race start was a few minutes late and we even managed to kind of get our breath back!
I ran the course in 24.54 (86th/189) and didn't stop to pose for a picture, or even walk, so the cross country captain would have a bit happier with my effort on this occasion!
Christine ran well and came in with a PB of 28.58 (127th/189) so the warm up must have worked!

Perpetual Shields
Message to all 2009 perpetual shield winners.
Please can the winners of the 2009 'Runner of the Year' 'Road', 'Fell' and 'X-Country' winners please bring the perpetual shields back to the respective team captains so we can get them engraved for the awards night.
If you are coming to the meeting that would be a good time to return them.

Pennine Bridleway Relay 30 Jan 2011 by Paul Jackson
Pennine Bridleway Relay 30 Jan 2011 by Paul Jackson
A&T have entered a team into this event for the first time ever. It promises to be a cracking team event. We have entered an Open team so male and female runners can join in.
The Mary Towneley Loop is part of the new Pennine Bridleway in the South Pennines area and was opened in May 2002.The route is 47 miles in length with 6300ft of ascent , is fully waymarked with mainly off road running on paths and tracks , some of them newly created and resurfaced .The Mary Towneley Loop takes in some of the best scenery the South Pennines have to offer , traversing the hillsides and crossing the valleys between Rossendale , Burnley , Hebden Bridge , Todmorden and Rochdale and crosses at least 13 Fell Race routes. The Pennine Bridleway Relay race will consist of 5 legs run in pairs in a clockwise circuit around the Mary Towneley Loop.Entries invited from open,Ladies,Vets, mixed (5 men and 5 ladies) or composite teams.
This event is a good winter get together for your club,is very similar in format to the popular Calderdale Way Relay organised by Halifax Harriers although this is 5 legs rather than 6 and the logistics are a bit simpler.
Full details of the event can be found here http://www.penninebridlewayrelay.co.uk/index.htm
I am now looking to recruit a team of 10, plus a couple of reserves, to compete in the event.
In accordance with FRA rules and having regard to the nature of the route and the time of year, it is mandatory that every competitor must wear or carry windroof ( preferably waterproof ) whole body cover i.e. cagoule and overtrousers, other body cover appropriate for the weather conditions, map suitable for safely navigating the course, compass, whistle plus hat and gloves. Emergency food should also be considered and competitors should bring such additional equipment in the event that it is required.
Bum bags must not be passed on at leg changeovers from one runner to another.
All I ask is that anyone who is interested in competing should be prepared to carry full safety kit as outlined above and once decided which leg you are running, be prepared to recce the leg prior to the event, preferably with your team mate.

Worksop Half Marathon by Steve Coleman
A large run, much of it in a NT park and mostly hills. For a change I got there late, to find all the car parks full, making it a bit near the time when I found somewhere to park, had to pick up my number before the run and wasn`t sure where that was. It was then that the evil imp showed it had struck. I opened the car boot to find that instead of my running shoes there was only a pair of old gym shoes that should have been put in the bin that morning. Somehow, it had changed the shoes around. Well, no choice had to use them and had no time for a warm up unless you count the desperate run to get the number and get to the start. Came in 1h 31m 47s. Bin as a reward for the old shoes where I found a pair of running shoes hidingand waiting for the next race.
