I’ve been at it again! I completed the Fleetwood marathon on Sunday 29th August in 3 hours 41 minutes and 2 seconds.
It’s my 5th of the year and brings my grand total to 25.
I gave a lift to David Bayley a friend of mine and seasoned marathon runner. We got to Fleetwood to be greeted with thick cloud and a very strong wind. About half an hour before the start there was even a horrible shower and things didn’t look good. The weather improved shortly into the run and the sun came out giving me sun burn on my forehead. The wind didn’t calm down and for long periods along the sea front it made running forward almost impossible. The wind whipped up the sand from the beach and it was like being sand blasted. We had to cover up our nose and mouth to stop inhaling the sand and run with one eye closed and the other half open to keep the stinging sand out. I have never experienced anything like it and would have preferred to run in hail!
Running down towards Blackpool the wind was mainly behind us but at 16 miles when we turned back towards Fleetwood it was like hitting a wall. David left me and I soldiered on mile after mile into this relentless wind.
The last mile and a half coming back into Fleetwood the coast curves to the east making the wind once again favorable. I picked up my pace and over took several runners including David , who likened me to a Gazelle when we met at the finish (a much appreciated comment, thanks Dave). I was pleased with the marathon, I took it at a comfortable steady pace and felt good even at the finish.
Kind Regards
Malcolm Collins

Superman Night Out - The Aftermath!
Just a big thanks to everyone that turned out last night for the Superman/curry night. Think there were 40+ A & T'ers in the pub and 37 came for the curry!
This such a big turn out shows how much we love our club!
Was a great night and am sure there are a few nasty hangovers this morning (including mine!)

12 in 12 by Stuart Adamson
12 in 12
I have set myself the challenge of doing a 12 in 12 next year. That is, to do 12 marathons in 12 months between January and December 2011. I haven't done a marathon before and I always knew I would have to do one at some point before I hung up the running shoes and was put out to pasture. However, I've seen a lot of people over the years doing a lot of challenges and thought I need to set myself one.
My initial intention was to find a marathon for each month somewhere in the country. I though this would be the easy bit. How wrong I was... I have revised my thinking and I'm still doing 12 in 12 but some months are fairly busy !!
Anyway, getting to the point. Would anybody else be interested in joining me on my quest? Below is a list of the races and dates I have come up with but will be subject to change depending on if I discover any to make the schedule easier. I'm also thinking that people will be doing London and some marathons overseas who may want to do a 12 in 12 also. So in effect as long as people do 12 in 12 then we could ineffect have support groups on races that weren't part of their schedule.
My current list is
Gloucester 23 Jan
Blackpool 10 Apr
Shakespeare 8 May
Windermere 22 May
Fleetwood 28 Aug (approx)
Wolverhampton 4 Sep (approx)
Great Langdale 24 Sep (approx)
Anglesey 25 Sep (approx)
MBNA Chester 9 Oct
Snowdonia 29 Oct (approx)
Newcastle Town 20 Nov (approx)
Luton 4 Dec (approx)
There are others that may come in but I'm struggling for anything local Feb, Mar, June and July which would take off the pressure - especially with Great Langdale and Anglesey on the same weekend. Does anybodyknow of any?
Anybody else daft enough to join in? email me Stuart.Adamson@volkerfitzpatrick.co.uk

Southport Bike Ride - by Helen Minshall
Hi everyone.
My son and I would like to do the bike ride to Southport and back on Sunday 5th September. Are there any other budding cyclists who might like to join us? I've recently bought a road bike and I've been doing a lot of cycling lately including the Manchester - Blackpool and Manchester - Chester bike rides, and I want to start training for triathlons (swimming is my best sport). The main group who are cycling to Southport will be averaging 17mph, and I reckon my son and I will probably be doing more like 14mph. Would any slower cyclists like to join us? We could set off at 8.30am and meet with the others in Southport?
Please email me on tubalady@blueyonder.co.uk

'Superman' Bank Holiday Drink - by Clare Unsworth
Hello all
We're thinking of having a night out this Sunday 29th August (Bank Holiday on Mon so you can get drunk!). It's just a club gathering and also a bit of a celebration of the achievements of Paul, Mark and Terry (supermen!)
The suggestion is drinky pub crawl round Atherton meeting in the Atherton Arms at 7.30pm and then a curry at Far Pav for those that want to later on.
We need to get an idea of numbers so please can you sign below if you fancy it?
If you fancy coming, even if it's just for a drink, please could you email me claroj@hotmail.com or text me 07753 618809 or let Liz or Paul B know! We won't commit you to anything!

Leek Half Marathon - Written by Alan Hilton
9 intrepid A & T runners made the trip to Leek for the latest Road Champs race. It was billed as a tough, undulating course where expected finishing times would be at least 5 mins outside PBs. With this in mind and the accompanying hot and sunny weather I think we were all pleased to have some support, especially when, amongst others, it came in the shape of Mark Ruscoe, Terry Hughes and Paul Bohannon, who had completed their Bob Graham or Iron Man challenges in recent weeks. A special thanks to the kids with sponges (water, not syrup) at each of the stops as well!
There were around 250 starters and it wasn't long before I began to question Steve Coleman's (a Leek veteran) definition of an undulating start. Proper hilly being more appropriate!
With Pete Chan leading the A & T challenge, the rest of us followed with me keeping an eye on Steve Coleman, The Runner with No Name (TRWNN) keeping an eye on me, Terry G keeping an eye on TRWNN and so on ..... Unfortunately, the hills were unrelenting and it was very sad to see Steve pull up with what looked like a serious knee injury at around 6 miles. He managed to get a lift in the ambulance back to the start once he had convinced the paramedics that Lyndsay wouldn't be needing it today.
I unfortunately cracked a short while later and broke the cardinal rule of road running and walked, not once, but twice. Thankfully after TRWNN caught me and we had a brief chat, his words " I am going to push on .... as I want to beat you" were incentive for me to pull my finger out. He was also later heard telling Terry to "sod off" when he got too close around 10 miles.
I know we all found the course tough, especially in the heat and unfortunately Mary-Anne retired on route.
Pete was the first A & T runner home in 10th overall with 1:25:27. I finished in 1:36:42 followed by TRWNN in an amazing PB of 1:37:20. Terry was happy with his sub 1:40 after his 3 week break cruising round the Eastern Med. Brenda looked very strong finishing 10th lady and second in the ladies L45 with a great time of 1:43:54, whilst Lyndsay finished 30th lady in 2:02:30. Helen came in still looking strong in 2:32:18.
All in all a very hard, scenic race but I think we were all in agreement that a nice PB half would be good on the race calendar next year.
P.S. The men came second in the team event but if there were any prizes to be had we missed them as the presentation seemed to be held a tad early

Birchwood 10km by Gary Stevens
9 A&T runners made the short journey to Birchwood to compete is this ever popular 10km event of just under 800 runners in what was warmer than expected conditions.
I (Gary) led the way with my fastest 10km for nearly 4 years and i think 4th fastest time ever in 38mins 13 to finish 65th. A rare outing by Jon Hyde was our next finisher in 40 mins 54 followed by Mark L who clocked a plucky 42 mins 52 running with a niggle.
'The Bacon Mon' Ian Hamilton knocked almost a minute off his 2009 effort with 44.35 with Wayne Babynec's next with a gutsy 46mins 52.
In our girls Laura Babynec led the way with 54mins23 with Mum Denise next 58mins 32 with the ever improving Cath Hodgetts getting under the magic hour in 59 mins52.
Clare Unsworth was our final finisher smiling as ever and with some much needed support by 'Mr Motivater Coates' as she managed to run the entire course without stopping and clock 1hr 8 mins 13.
The runners would like to thank the Coates family and also Derek Coop for their much needed support.
The pictures will be on the blog tomorrow, some of which are pretty x-rated !!!

Great Warford 10 Mile by Steve Coleman
A hot Sunday on the 15th saw this race of one small loop and two four mile loop take place. Not flat but all countryside. There was a good turn out from Swinton, after some training I think, for a upcoming race. I did 1h 4m 34s and Elliot Hughes 1h 42m 23s

Brick Session Cancelled
Due to the fact most of us are racing on Sunday either at Leek or Birchwood and because there are a few people on holiday Mondays brick session is cancelled.
Instead for those who fancy it we are meeting at Atherton Train Station at 6pm for a 20 mile tempo ride around the loops of North Road, Atherton.
If a few abilities turn up we'll split into groups

Evening Enigma Marathon - by Malc Collins
I returned to Milton Keynes for the second time in 24 days, to complete the Evening Enigma Marathon. My fourth marathon this year.
Last time it was a lovely sunny day 22 degrees and a bit too hot from marathon running. This time it didn’t start any better with the sun beaming and a very similar temperature. But by the time I was running the second half the sun was getting lower in the sky and the shadows longer, the temperature became slightly cooler so it wasn’t too bad.
It’s a lovely trail marathon, run around a lake and out and back along the grand union canal. It was a very low key event with 20 competitors and no course marshals (I had to remember the course from last month) and take my own water as the only drinks station was water left at the side of the canal at the 14 mile turn round point.
I was pleased with my time of 3 hours 40 minutes 10 seconds.
Kind Regards
Malcolm Collins

15th August 2010, Belper in Derbyshire
Alan Hilton and myself had a great day out this Sunday. The run had approx 400 entrants and the route is well marhalled. You can walk it, leaving at 8 am, returning at the latest 4 pm. Runners left at 9.30 leaving the roads for paths, bridleways and moorland in the beautiful countryside. If you enjoy running off road, are good over stiles with no fear of cattle, look for this to race in 2011. Absolutely great day with refreshments on the course and at the finish.

Good luck Paul & Mark
For those not in the know The Bob Graham round of 42 Lake District fells traversed within 24 hours is probably the most demanding test of physical fitness available to British Athletes or mountaineers. The rules for the Bob Graham 24 hour club state that the round can be attempted either clockwise or anti-clockwise. provided that the start and finish is at Moot Hall, Keswick.
Good luck guys from all A&T.

Newark Half - by Steve Coleman
On Sunday I did my 16th half marathon of this year at Newark. About the 5th time I have done this one. Warm, blue sky and no wind. Rather different from the weather here! Best time before was 1h 29m 38s so was pleased to do better at 1h 27m 37s. Has a hateful hill after 9 miles but a well supported race.
Why should i take part in brick sessions?
Well done to the A&T and ARC members who took part in Monday's brick session and nice to see a couple of new faces take part in Steve Foster and Michelle Fuller.
The next session is on Monday 23rd August.
Brick sessions are not just geared towards triathletes - see the article below taken from Runners World.
Building Bricks
Become a better runner by jumping on the saddle and heading for the pool
Triathlete Tim Don wiped the floor with more experienced runners at this year's Great Manchester Run 10K, coming in just a minute after Haile Gebrselassie at 28:56. So what's a triathlete's secret weapon? Brick sessions: more varied and more intense than your usual workout, these combine running with cycling or swimming. After your usual warm-up, hit the bike, pool or stationary cycle for a pre-run session to ramp up your workload and reap the rewards.
If you want to... Work your whole body
Build on this: Swim to run
For optimum running form, don't neglect your upper body. "Swimming increases mobility and flex in the arms, shoulders and back, which enhances running style and aerobic capacity," says triathlon coach Barry Jameson (tri4u.co.uk). Start with a couple of lengths, building up by one or two lengths a week. Incorporate a brief run after three to five weeks. You'll still feel the benefits even if you have to take time to dry off and get changed. When swimming isn't practical, try a gym-based brick session - this could be 25 minutes on the rowing machine followed by long session on the treadmill.
Training tip While you can use any stroke, Jameson says front crawl is fast, efficient and involves less aggressive kicking than other strokes, leaving legs fresh and ready to run.
If you want to... Increase endurance
Build on this: Long ride to long run
If long runs bore you, but you need to pack in more mileage, try an endurance session in the saddle. "If the total length of the session is equivalent to your longest run, you get the same improvement to your heart and lung capacity without the monotony," says endurance coach Nick Anderson (runningwithus.com). A typical session might be 90-120 minutes slow cycling, followed by a 60-90-minute run.
Training tip Spin your legs faster in your last few minutes on the bike - Anderson says this will prime your muscles for the transition to the motion of running.
If you want to... Get faster
Build on this: Bike sprint to speed session
Looking for a great way to prepare for a speedy run? Then hit the pedals and try a speedy cycle. "A fast spin on a bike prepares you for the rapid turnover of a speed session," says triathlon coach Shannon Paterson (pt2achieve.com). "Start at a cadence of 80-90 revolutions per minute for five minutes, then 90 rpm for another 10 minutes." It's best to choose an easy gear, so you can pedal faster. You're then ready for a speedwork session. Anderson recommends five reps of five minutes, each at your lactate threshold (when lactic acids starts to accumulate).
Training tip If you don't have a cadence counter on your bike, pedal fast while counting how many times your right knee comes up in 30 seconds. Multiply this number by two. Not exactly high-tech, but it works well enough.
If you want to... Beat injury
Build on this: Aqua-jog to run
Using a buoyancy belt like Keifer's Aqua Runner (£17.99, swimshop.co.uk) to keep upright and afloat, you can run underwater at the same intensity as you would on the road, but with a fraction of the strain on your joints, bones and muscles. "It's a good way to increase the length of your runs without stressing out your body," says Anderson. "A session might involve aqua-jogging for 60 minutes at threshold heart rate. Then come out and run 30-45 minutes."
Training tip Go for a swim the day after a hard run - the water relieves muscle tightness and speeds recovery from muscular micro-tears.

GARRY BAINES IS AWAY ON HOLIDAY.
Isle of Man Half Marathon - by Garry Baines
Yesterday Carole and I competed in the Isle of Man Half Marathon and we were fortunate to come away with trophies as we both finished 3rd in our respective Vet categories.
After a miserable few days, the weather turned out to be perfect and apart from a serious hill between 3 and 4 miles, the course was fair. The only gripe was that we both measured the distance as 13.2miles and therefore we had to find the energy for an extra 160mts.
250 or so runners competed in the Half marathon and I managed to cross in 46th place recording 1:35:44 finishing 3rd in the V50 category. Carole knocked 39 seconds off her PB in finishing 70th with a time of 1:43:13, also 3rd position in the Ladies V45 category. There was a prize for the first three places in each Vet Category and therefore we were both presented with 2 very nice matching plaques.
Our thanks go to the Coates family for their support. Andy actually cycled over the mountain from Douglas to Ramsey to meet us for the start of the race (about 15 miles). He then helped me with my warm up and ran for a short while with Carole in the latter stages (about 5 miles running in total) and then cycled the long route back to Douglas (17miles). Talk about brick sessions.
The whole event was extremely well organised in a great atmosphere. As you crossed the line you got a print out of your time and your race position. You could then watch the times of the other runners on screen as they came in and also see the times of the runners who were already back. T-Shirt, goody bag, free massage and a free buffet the like of which you’ve never seen at a race (smoked salmon et al)- all for 18 quid.
Altogether we had a very enjoyable day.

Whittle Pike Fell Race 4.5ml/1400’- by Paul Jackson
This is a race that we always look forward to so it was a shame that there was a clash with the C.L.G.P. Race at Chorley. Nevertheless, five A&T regulars made the trip to Cowpe Village and the race didn’t disappoint.
Black clouds hung precariously over the moors and I was half expecting another deluge of rain like we had two years ago, but it just about held off.
Mark and I were keen to seal the prizes for Overall winner and Vets winner, respectively. I wanted an easy run out, but Marcus has been breathing down my neck all season and as soon as he turned up I knew I had to run hard to get the result I wanted.
Off we went and the conditions were perfect after the recent spells of rain. The race starts with a steep climb onto the moors before some steep descents and hands and feet scrambles up grassy banks to gain the ascent again. Up to the memorial at Whittle Pike (For anyone interested a cross in memory of a flying officer and Scout Group founder who was lost on a flying mission in 1955), then a tricky trod around to the quick descent on road to the village. The sting in the tail is an uphill up a playing field to the finish line.
Mark had a good steady run to finish in the top twenty, followed by me then Marcus. Abbie had a great run out and looked strong as she edged out another runner and beat him to the line. Tracy then came in running strong up the field to the line, and despite her recent effort at Ingleborough, was taken a bit by surprise by this short but hilly course. The official distance is given as 4.5 mls but most Garmins were recording 5.1mls.
Congratulations to Mark Ruscoe who has sealed the Fell Champs title with two races to go.
1st Sam Tosh – Rossendale Harriers 41:33
18th Mark Ruscoe 48:05
34th Paul Jackson 50:43
36th Marcus Taylor 52:26
113th Abbie Eckersley 72:59
124th Tracy Parry 84:17

Chorley 4.4 Mile Report by Garry Baines
On an overcast and windy evening, 30 A&T members started the Chorley 4.4 Mile Trail Race last night. Unfortunately only 29 were able to finish as Ray Taylor pulled up with a pre-cruise calf strain. Look forward to seeing photos of the A&T vest on that boat Ray.
Pride of place must go to the Ladies who came home with the team prize and enhanced our position in the CLGP standings.
Maria Lowe, making her CLGP debut for the club, stormed home to win the Ladies race, finishing 21st overall, in a blistering time of 27:43 beating the 2nd placed lady from Wesham by over a minute!
It was great to see Mary-Anne Tracey-Aguera backed on the circuit and she didn’t disappoint finishing 3rd lady overall and 2nd for A&T with 28:58. Next for A&T and 4th overall was Joanne Iborra with 29:52 making up the team who took 1st prize.
Able support came from the other lady members with Brenda (or is it Brendan) Wane running strongly for 32.42 and looking good for the Isle of Wight Marathon. Carole Baines continued her good form and crossed the line in 34.16, hotly pursued by Suzanne Gregory in 34.43, who’d had a hard day slaving over a hot oven whilst baking the “very welcome” post cakes for the team. Maybe you’ve started something Suzanne and we should have cake rota for each race – don’t fancy Paul Basnett’s Guinness cakes though.
Michelle Fuller battled hard against the undulating course and finished in 38:38 with Laura Babynec 39:18(sprint finish noted) and Sarah Sadler 39:35 tracking her down. Steering the ship home was Helen Minshall in 43:44 spurred on by the huge A&T contingent.
The Men also had a successful evening taking the runners-up spot for the team event.
Simon Ford seems to have found the perfect training formula and is increasing his pace with each race. First again for A&T he finished 6th overall in 26:08, out-stripping Paul Mannion to the line, who clocked 26:35. Pete Chan, off again to recuperate in Devon, was 3rd A&T finisher in 26:48 with Shaun Moran close by with 26:59. Gary Atherton highlighted his improvement this year, brought about by some aggressive training, by finishing 11 seconds behind Shaun in 27:11. Another Gary, of the Stevens variety, is getting stronger as the season progresses and recorded an impressive time of 28:14. Alan Hilton, perhaps hampered a little by the effects of marathon training, came home in 29:16 with Steve Coleman 29:32 and Greg Rusoce 29:38 not far behind.
Further down the field there was a race within a race. Craig Bradbury dipped under 31 minutes in 30:59 but John Lee 31:05, Mark Lysycia 31:06, Steve Foster 31:16 and yours truly 31:26 pushed him all the way. The last hill did for me and by the time I’d stopped heaving it was too late to try and catch Steve.
Ian Hamilton ran a plucky race for 33:30 and Dave Crowe looks to have overcome his injury problems, no doubt fuelled by Suzanne’s baking, to get back in 33:38. Wayne Babynec stuck to the task well for 35 minutes dead and it was great to see “Scouse” Mark Crowley racing again. Finally we have to say that Paul Basnett must have been putting in some secret speed work, the way he coasted past the guy in the Celtic shirt in the finishing straight. Recording 36:27 on that course, he is looking good for the cross-country season.
A superb turnout by the club, matched by the results on the night.
Next club race is the Leek Half Marathon on 22nd August –get your entries in if you haven’t done so already.
Next CLGP race is the Swinton 10 on the 26th September. Entry Form will be available shortly.

Macclesfield Tri - Volunteers Wanted
Hello,
I’m e-mailing from Xtra Mile Events,
We are organising the Macclesfield Triathlon on the 15th August and are looking for marshals to help out on the day and wondered if anyone from Astley & Tyldesley Road Runners would be able to help please?
The success of these events is often down to the volunteer marshals who help to guide the athletes around the course.
We have a number of ways of returning the favour and in particular for Astley & Tyldesley Road Runners, if a member can get a friend or family member to marshal they can have a refund on their race fee!
We will require volunteers from 7am but will be finished by lunchtime, food will be provided and it is a fun day out!
Let me know if this is of interest to anyone at Astley & Tyldesley Road Runners or if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me and I can explain the event in more detail.
Many Thanks
Becky

Ironman UK - Written by Terry Hughes
A massive heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported me at the Ironman yesterday. I'm quite emotional at the level of personal support from everyone from A&T. I feel very lucky to have you as my friends. Your support really kept me going throughout the whole event. A special thanks to Steve Foster, Brenda, Shaun, John Lee & Craig Brad who were there for the whole event and provided much needed motivation when the going got really tough. You got me to the finish! Not forgetting Craig Little (who was there at the swim and for the run), Mary 'the motivator' Anne, Mark L, Mark R & Lyndsey, Garry & Carol, Ian H, Eva, Suzanne & Dave, Pete Chan & Marcus (who was marshalling). Thanks also to the huge number of messages before and after the event. Apologies if I've missed anyone. I also got a cheer on from Wigan Phoenix which was nice.
The event itself was amazing. There was a fantastic atmosphere at the Swim at Pennington Flash, which started from about 4am and continued all the way to the finish. Channel 4 were in swim-bike transition, recording the event (which will be broadcast on September I think). Watching 1,400 people getting into the flash was quite a sight and the build up was very uplifting with supporters cheering everyone on. Forgot to mention about getting up at 2.30 to have my breakfast - the whole day was completely mental. The 2.4 mile swim seemed to pass very quickly even allowing for the kick in the side of the head, but apart from that, it was an easy swim around a triangular course. Coming out of the water, we were all helped out by the 'race' crew' who did a great job making getting everyone onto their feet ready for the jog back to transition. The race crew helped people get their wet suits off and deposit their bags, Again, A&T were out in force cheering me on, which was great.
The first few miles of the bike stage were taken at a steady pace leading up to Adlington ready for the start of the three lap 112 mile course. It took a few miles to stop feeling dizzy from the swim, but by the time I approached Sheephouse Lane everything had calmed down. It was an undulating course apart from SheepHouse, which needs to be ridden with caution and you need to be out of the saddle on the top section to keep the pedals turning. as I was on my first lap, the leader went flying past on a twisting lane, chased by a Channel 4 motorbike with a camerman standing up - I'm not sure who impressed me the most the camera crew or the triathlete. It was to hear support all the way round the bike course and the police setup at every junction was very impressive. I never had to stop or slowdown at any point on the course. Lap1 ad 2 on the bike course turned out to be uneventful which was lucky as there were a lot of people who'd broken down. Lap 3 got a bit tough going up Sheehouse lane. The start of sheephouse was mobbed with supporters (and looked a bit like the Tour De France'ish) on both sides of the narrow lane and on the grass bank. Half way up Sheephouse, I briefly considered walking up the top section but as I approached, no-one else was walking so that made up my mind - I wasn't walking either, so got out of the saddle for the last 200 metres to the top. Turning the hair-pin bend at the top was a relief and the rest of the 32 mile lap continued without any problem. Praise needs to be given the feed stations who always had all the right stuff and skilfully gave out drinks, gels & powerbars as you went past without needing to stop. Approaching Rivington reservoir for the last time felt really good, ready for the last mile to the bike-run transition at Rivington High school.
Still feeling strong, arriving at bike-run transition, the race crew parked my bike, so I only had to walk to the changing area, get my bag and change ready for the run. The start of the run was up a steep trail for 1 mile, which I thought was a bit cruel, but 'it is what it is'. Jogging down the trail to the first feed station at mile 4 seemed ok. A&T were out in force, which was brilliant. I set off at a steady pace along Chorley New Road, but then at 7 miles the going got very tough very quickly. I chose to walk up Overdale Drive (if you know it you'll know why) and then walked-ran into the town centre for the turnaround. By this point, the weather was very hot and the climb back up to Horwich for the last turnaround, was murderous. Steve, Brenda & Craig gave much needed encouragement as well as from my son & Sister. On the way back to Horwich, I stopped taking gels as I was getting terrible stomach cramps every few minutes and switched to diluted Gatorade swiftly followed by two painkillers, so by the time I turned at the Crown pub ready for the final leg of the run, I did feel a lot better, but I was still dying on my a*se. The sun had set had a bit by now, so the weather was a lot cooler, but it was still very difficult to keep running - Up till this point, my mind had been telling my body to ignore the pain and 'get on with it'. But by now, my mind had almost jacked it in as well. However, I never lost the determination to make it to the end, regardless of ongoing run-walk combinations. A&T kept me going all the way now. Getting to the downhill point on Chorley New Road, just outside the town centre I managed to get going again and kept it going to the finish, which at times I thought would never come.
The finish was amazing. The atmosphere was incredible. I can't believe how can change from feeling so bad to so good within the space of 1 mile. All the pain disappeared straight away, replaced by great relief and smiles and hugs all round.
The event was a great challenge and is one that I'm glad I've completed, but I won't be doing another one! Top marks to the organisers for hosting an incredible event.
My overall finish time was 13hrs 53mins (Swim 1hr 24mins, Bike 7hrs 21mins, Run 4hrs 49mins) - I'm just relieved I made it to the end, otherwise I'd have had to do it again.
I think I used about 9,000 calories (for my weight) and throughout the day consumed...1 Big bowl of porridge, 2 rounds of wholemeal toast, 1 litre of orange squash, 4 Litres of Nutrisport Energy Boost, 3 litres of water, 2 cheese and ham rolls (with Brown Sauce), 1 cheese roll, 1 packet of pretzels, 3 bananas, 2 gels, 2 litres of diluted gatorade and 2 pain killers. By the end I was completely empty and very de-hydrated.
Thanks again to all at A&T - You are amazing and you really kept me going to the end!!
Cheers, Terry.
Note - There will be more pics on the website on TG's return under the pictures section.
Whittle Pike Fell Race (AS)- Wed 4th August - by Paul Jackson
This is the only occasion that a Fell Champs Race co-incides with Road Champs Race and as Fell Captain, I have to bring this race to everyone's attention to be fair to all who are challenging for prizes in the Fell Champs/Grand Prix.
This is a 4.5mile/1400' ascent race that starts at 7.30pm with the registration at Cowpe Village Hall, Waterfoot, Rossendale. £3.00 entry on the day.
It is a cracking race with some steep scrambles and quick descents.
Anyone thinking of running the race and wants a lift or join the convoy should be ready to leave the Rail Station at 6.15pm.
If you are not in the running for a fell prize then I'm sure Garry would appreciate seeing you at Chorley for the 4.4 mile trail race.

Leyland 5km - by Paul Basnett
As I don't like training but enjoy racing I decided to do a 5k run in Leyland on Saturday afternoon.
It turned out to be only a small field of less than 50 runners where I finished 20th in a PB time of 23.45
The run was in a park and it was half grass and half path so good practice for the up and coming x-country season where I may not finish quite so far at the back this year!
The efforts sessions I have been doing on Monday and Wednesdays have helped as I now feel a bit more comfortable keeping up the pace when fooked!
I even managed to out sprint 3 people in the last 200m and Suzanne will be pleased to hear I didn't even resort to using my dip! So many thanks to Shaun and Peter for taking time out to do those sessions.
The race entry also included a free day pass at FX leisure but I couldn't take up the offer as it for was only that day and I had not brought my cossie!

Haydock Races - Saturday 7th August
Hi,
This Saturday 7th August Liz, Ruth and Paul B are going to Haydock races and would like as many of the A&T members to come and join the fun.
Liz is currently without internet connection so wants me to promote the day on her behalf.
Liz is currently without internet connection so wants me to promote the day on her behalf.
The first race is at 2.20pm but we plan to get there by 1.30pm
No transport is arranged at the moment so we can just do our own thing but if there is enough interest maybe we can sort out a mini bus although it may be late notice.
I know in typical A&T fashion people will want to stay out afterwards so its been suggested we go for a few drinks round Atherton and then go watching Glamorize in the Bluebell at 9pm.
Should be a cracking day out, sorry for the late notice.
Hope you can all make it.
Lancaster 5km - by Maria Lowe
