New track fee for non-members
Due to the increasing cost of hiring the track on Mondays, and whilst not wishing to deter potential new members from trying out one or two sessions, we will have to impose a fee of £2.50 per session for any non-members wishing to take part in future, in order to recover part of this cost. This will be payable to any A&T committee member.
Of course, Membership of the Club costs only £20 p.a. and entitles you to free weekly track sessions in Summer and bi-weekly sessions in Winter.

A&T v Swinton Challenge - by Garry Baines
On the wettest night for months, our friends from Swinton RC made the short journey down the East Lancs Road to contest the 1st Leg of this year’s challenge at LSV.
Taking the format of a 30 minute Paarlauf, both clubs fielded 8 teams of 3 runners, with A&T supplemented by the inclusion of a “very” junior team. As you would expect the race was conducted in an extremely competitive but friendly spirit with all runners giving 100%.
There were some great performances with the winning team managing 26 laps and approx. 120mts. or just over 6.5 miles. To put things into perspective, this is around 17seconds per mile faster than Gabresalassie’s record-breaking marathon pace.
Even the 7th teams from both clubs managed 21 plus laps.
The final finishing order with points scored was as follows:-
A big thank you to the lap recorders – Dave Crowe, Liz Ellicott, Andrew and Michelle Coates - who had the arduous task of counting every team as they completed each lap.
So A&T take back the trophy, at least for the time being. Swinton will have their chance for revenge at the 2nd Leg at Swinton on 25th August and we’re all looking forward to that encounter.

Eddie's Revenge Fell Race- Wed 30th June
This Wednesday is Middleton Harriers' turn to host a Grand Prix fell race which is also a Club Champs race. It is 3.8mls/1060' ascent, so it's a short, tough race. The race is run mostly on trails so trail shoes should suffice for this event especially in these dry conditions.
Race start is 7.30pm at Shaw Edge Methodist Church, Buckstones Road, Oldham OL2 8LS
Entry is £4.00 on the day or FREE if you bring along a homemade cake for the raffle.
As the traffic is normally bad on the M62 at that time I'd suggest leaving the rail station no later that 6pm.
Hopefully see you there,
Paul Jackson
Lymm 5k - by Garry Baines
In hot and humid conditions, 26 members competed in the undulating Lymm 5k on Saturday in a competitive field.
Highlight of the day came when the Men collected the Team Prize. Leading them home was Paul Mannion in 16:41, crossing the line 4th overall and taking the V40 prize.
Simon Ford was 2nd A&T finisher in 17:53 with Shaun Moran and Peter Chan enjoying a close tussle in 3rd and 4th. Shaun got the nod by 2 seconds on this occasion with 18:07 and the secured the V50 award.
Strong performances followed from Mark Riches 18:34, Gary Stevens 18:53, Alan Hilton 19:29 and Terry Gardiner 19:40, the latter collecting a PB in the process.
Alan Webb 21:14, Steve Foster 21:27 and Garry Baines 22:00 all finished within sight of each other, whilst Ray Taylor 22:46 and Ian Hamilton 23:07 suffered in the demanding conditions.
Dave Crowe 23:45, still having hamstring problems, and Glyn Thomson 23:48 enjoyed a close contest, whilst Paul Basnett fought hard for his 25:34 time.
The Ladies Team finished in a creditable 3rd place. Josey Maley led the way finishing 4th overall in 19:44, just missing out on adding to her wine collection. Brenda Wane 22:28 and Carole Baines 23:09 made up the team but there was strong support from Suzanne Gregory 23:41 and Michaela Shaw on her way back in 24:10.
Lyndsey Carter 25:25 ran a strong race on her comeback from injury and Jo Riches 25:37, made a rare appearance to push her all the way. Close on her heels was Michelle Fuller with 25:59.
Emma Carter and 31:53 and Clare Unsworth 32:10 dug in well and finished strongly.
Several notable performances came in the fun run from some of the A&T offspring, including Cerys Baines, Joseph Wane and Mikey and Luke Hilton.
There then followed an impromptu football match in which all managed to avoid injury, despite the close attentions of Josey “bite your legs” Maley. Several players showed some pace and passion, contrary to those who “competed” in the match 24 hours later.

Membership Update - by Mark L
I am delighted to announce that Colin Rigby has now joined Astley and Tyldesley Road Runners as a second claim member.
I think it is fair to say that in the running community Colin is an outstanding athlete and his reputation goes before him.
Colin's wealth of experience will certainly be of value to our club and also our up and coming runners, both male and female.

My 50th - by Mark Lysycia
Hi Everyone,
Just back from a few days away so this is the first opportunity for me to say a few words about the charity 50th birthday race, Wednesday 16th June.
I want to start by saying a huge thank you to all of you who turned up on the night to either run, help or watch. I was overwhelmed with the support and the numbers, 55 ran, which is only a few numbers down on a very well "established" mid week 5 mile race, think it was the goody bag, prizes and a water at the end which swung it...oh and a pastie! I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and hope you all had a good night. I will remember it for a long time.
Early indications show we have made around £377 either through raffle ticket sales and race entries, so well done to you all.
As we had 55 runners and over 35 A+T runners, I cannot begin to list all the individual performances but take it from me, you all did superb and I was more than delighted you all turned up to support the event which for a mid week race is fantastic.
All the results have been published last Thursday on the A+T blog. Suffice as to say, the men and ladies from A+T did superbly, posting some really fast times on a very warm sunny evening to do a tough little 5k.
Winners
Paul Mannion 1st 16.57...continues to dominate the 5k races
Andrew Neary 2nd and not far behind Paul. 17.23 nice to see him in the A+T colours ( always said Andrew would suit blue!)

Josie Maley 1st lady and 13th overall 19.35 just gets better with each race and every very race so far to date, its a prize!

George’s Smiles Saturday 19th June by Mark Riches
Two year old George Ward was born with Crouzon Syndrome, which means that the bones in his head fuse quicker than normal. He needs a few major operations to correct it so he can lead a regular life
Since George was born, he has been in hospital over 100 days & had 12 operations – he is a very brave boy!
George’s parents are raising funds to help the accommodation block created especially for parents of sick children at Alder Hey hospital
Sarah Lucas of Leigh Harriers was the driving force behind this the first George’s Smiles race, which started & finished at the large playing fields at Pennington Flash.
Ray Taylor & Clare Unsworth championed the race at A&T & they were joined on the day by Shaun Moran, Suzanne Gregory, Joanne Riches, Alan Hilton, David Crowe & me (Mark Riches)
There was a 3 mile run & 1 mile fun run / walk. Those doing the 1 mile just did the first lap & the rest of us went round 3 times!
After approximately 10 – 15 minutes delay, due to the demand for numbers on the day we were off. Alan set off extremely quickly & as Shaun had said he was taking it steady due to racing the Freckleton Half the day after, I thought I had better go with Alan. We went through the first mile in 05:38 & I sensed that this was too quick! Despite what he said, Shaun was right on my shoulder & half way round the second lap he pushed on. Going into the final lap, Alan dropped off the pace & I tried desperately hard to stay with Shaun but to no avail & Shaun went on to win the race in around 17:10 (not seen any official results – sorry.) I finished 2nd in 17:30
Alan & Ray both had great runs finishing 3rd & 4th respectively. Suzanne was 1st & Joanne was 2nd lady - both ran really well. David completed the male line up with a solid run, which seems to suggest that his injury worries are behind him (I hope so) & Clare had another excellent run producing another PB (30:02)
All participants got a medal & the winner of both the 1 mile (Alan’s son) & 3 mile (Shaun) got a trophy. Also the day after I got a text (entry form asked for mobile number) this read:
“A big thank you for everyone who ran in George’s Smiles from George’s Mum and Dad; the day was a huge success! Looking forward to next year”
It was a great day / great cause & I will certainly be doing it again next year. Hope a few of you will join me

Potters Half Marathon by Steve Coleman
Last Sunday I did the Potteries alf marathon. 13th half this year and I forgot that this one gets harder during the course with steep hills all saved for the last half. Does a range of medals, gold for under 1h30, silver sub 1h45 and bronze sub 2h and a standard medal there after. A well turned out race which gives the option of starting at 9am if you want to walk, runners start 10.30. chip times for runners. Went for gold but again it turned not to be real. 1h 29m 15.

Bike Ride - Monday 21st June
Calling all cyclists...
Gary S
We are meeting at LSV 6pm for a prompt 6.15pm start for our next group bike ride session, it was great to see some new faces and i believe there are going to be even more for this ride..and not only that a couple of new bikes...Ninja Fairclough and Orby Baines are both said to be raring to go.
The plan is similar to last time..a nice steady ride up to Newbrook Road before stopping and waiting for everyone to get together. We will do the loops again with a choice of 2 or 3 loops on a very undulating course.
Cycle with someone of your own ability and push each other around especially on the hills, its amazing how that helps with the pain.

Remember please be careful and enjoy the ride.
See you Monday.
A&T v. Swinton RC Challenge Monday 28th June 2010
Monday 28th June sees the 1st Leg of the second A&T/ Swinton Challenge Match. A&T will host this first event at Leigh Sports Village - meeting at 6.45pm for the run which will start at 7.30p.m.
This is intended to be a light-hearted, fun challenge and is designed to involve runners of all abilities in both Clubs. Swinton & A&T are similar clubs, who are attracting many members who are new to running and who have not entered races before. This will also be a good opportunity for both clubs to invite and include potential new members, who can get a feel for themselves what it’s like to be part of a club and the running fraternity.
The competition on this particular evening will be run as a 30 minute Track Paarlauf race under the following rules:-
1. Runners will be selected into teams of 3 of equal abilities.
2. The A&T teams will be picked by the A&T captain and likewise the Swinton Captain will pick the Swinton teams.
3. A Paarlauf is a team relay on a running track with 3 team members. Each team member runs 200m and ‘tags’ the next member, who then sets off for 200m and so on. So before we start the 1st team member will be on the start line and the 2nd at the 200m point. Once underway the 3rd team member will go stand on the start line (where the 1st member has just set off from) and wait for the 2nd member in their team to come round and set them off. After the 3rd team member has completed 200m he ‘tags’ the 1st team member and the sequence starts again.
We will do this continuous relay for 30 minutes and the winning team is the one covering most distance in that time.
4. At the end of 30 minutes a whistle will be blown and the runners must stop immediately. Each team will be allocated a race position number i.e. the team finishing first scores 1, the 2nd team scores 2 etc. The club with the lowest number of points wins the challenge.
5. If, for example, A&T enter 10 teams and Swinton enter 8 teams, only A&T’s best 8 scores will count.
Please let me know if you intend to take part in the event so we can gauge possible numbers.
There is no pressure on anyone to produce spectacular times. It really is a social gathering interspersed with a bit of leisurely running.
If anyone needs more information, please e-mail me on: garrybaines@aol.com

The A&T 5k Handicap at Leigh sports Village - by Pete Chan
Mercifully the rain held off for our annual handicapped 5k race ie 12 ½ grueling laps of the track at the LSV. I decided to start everyone staggered according their handicap to ensure everyone finished around the same lap. I am sure the lap counters were delighted at this at the start of the event but maybe not so much as the race went on and the field started to close up.
“You must be joking” was the reaction of probably 80% of the people on seeing their predicted 5k time which had been calculated from recent race results or estimated from over distance events eg 10k. It was interesting to see at the end though only 6 runners from the 30 competitors actually ran slower than their Handicap and 5 of those were only by mere seconds. Its amazing what athletes can pull out of the bag when the chase is on.
The chase was well and truly on as Claire got the party underway as the first runner to depart and then the steady stream of athletes right down to Horwich’s Dave Jackson off last, and running as a guest to sharpen up for his fell debut at the two lads race this week. Watching the race was fascinating as you could see the ones off last gradually clawing back the ones in front and the ones in front pulling out some really brave performances to keep their advantage.
The race was won by Michelle Fuller who demonstrated her massive improvements this year by outperforming her handicap by almost 2 mins to record 24.27 (30.57). Following closely in second (and the scorers could see her storming through the field as the race unfolded) was Suzanne Gregory in a time of 22.53. (31.08). 3rd was Carole Baines who has also shown massive improvements in her running this year to record 22.35 (31.50) just pipping Claire who bravely held on for 4th place a massive 68 seconds inside her predicted time with a 31.52 (31.52) clocking. As a statistic these 4 ladies had a combined time which was 6 minutes and 12 seconds in front of their calculated predicted finishing times.
As someone remarked during the presentation “and now to the mens race” …. J …… Well the fastest 5k on the night was run by our guest runner Dave Jackson in a swift 17.39 (32.54). The fastest A&T runner award of the night was actually shared between Gary Stevens 18.17 (31.54) and Mark Riches 18.17 (32.53) both out performed their handicap and Gary by a huge 43 seconds and if my memory serves me correctly his fastest 5k on the track having last run 18.32 in 2008 … I keep saying it but a real achievement after his illness last year. Well done to both Gary and Mark.
There were also quite some outstanding performances and three or four results on that sheet I think are real ‘eyebrow raisers’ … you know who you are!!
Some thanks are due to our lap scorers Abbie, Andy and Michelle Coates, Michaela, Robin and Louise … it must have been the most confusing and stressful job on the planet as the field bunched up but we got through so thanks a lot guys.
My apologies that some of the timings got a bit messed up, I take the blame fully for this. I should have made a better contingency plan for athletes showing up on the night, as it was numbers allocated late ended up out of sequence and that is what caused the confusion with some of the times. 0wing to it being a handicap event the timings and lap c0unting is always quite complex … so to my timing team … sorry guys and sorry for adding to your stress by constantly mithering.
Well done to everyone, 12 ½ laps of a track is a daunting prospect at the best of times!!....... So a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who showed up and raced.
Don’t forget there is another chance to punish yourself over 5km albeit on a very different surface on Wednesday as A&T stage Mark and Derek’s 50th Birthday Charity 5k …All proceeds are going to the Gill Pimlott cancer unit fund so a very good cause will be supported on what will be a great fun night H0pe to see you all there.

Message from Mark Lysycia
Hi Everyone,
Just a note to say men's short sleeve running tops arrived today, at long last! Ladies tops are on a boat I have been told and should be here soon.
As usual, please see Suzanne or myself with your size requirement. Cost of the tee shirt is £8.50. If possible just send a quick e-mail to remind us to bring the stock to the session, or simply ask when you see us.
I was amazed also at the amount of money I collected before and after Pete's 5k handicap(great session Pete and the helpers). Over £100. £70 in raffle tickets, entry money for Wednesdays race and money for the very smart looking A+T jacket.....yes , we do still sell them. So thanks to all of you who have purchased raffle tickets so far. On Wednesday night, Clare will be helping me sell some more before and after the race, so remember to hound her before she gets you.
I did mention it tonight but please make sure you do not park on Ley Rd but on the car park or follow the Marshall's instructions.
Good to see Cliff and Micheal down on the track tonight. Not seen Cliff at the club for months and don't think I've Micheal on the track before
Also good to see David Jackson who trained with us for the second time tonight. Another quality runner, who, if he joins can only strengthen the men's team immensely . There's too many people to mention, but basically, its good to see you all on these training sessions.
Very well done to the ladies Clare,Carole, Michelle and Suzanne who won prizes and to Mark R and Gary S for doing it for the lads.
Any non A+T member reading this and who run for another club but feel they may want to try another club, why not try us for a few weeks to see if you like it. Everyone who does that end up joining A+T as our reputation amongst the running circles is rapidly spreading.
Don't forget, if you are not running on Wednesday, but don't mind helping out, please let me know.
See you all Wednesday.
Thanks
Mark

Boothstown Wobble - by Mark Riches
The Boothstown Wobble has been "run" in Boothstown for over 20 years. After a gap of a couple of years, the Wobble was brought back to life with the help of the Boothstown Residents Association.
The wobble is an unusual distance of 5.5k but provides a chance to run, walk or stagger around some of the beautiful areas of this Salford village. The course was very good (so good I went round again to ‘warm down’) incorporating part of our training run up to Astley Village and the canal back towards Worsley but on the opposite side to what we normally run. Weather was kind although the heavens opened shortly after the presentation of the prizes
A&T were considerably outnumbered by Atherton Running Club, who had an excellent turnout (nice to see so many familiar faces) Having said that A&T were well represented with Gary Atherton, Josie Maley, Ian Hamilton, Clare Unsworth & myself (Mark Riches) – sorry if I missed anyone but I can’t find any official results!
Rebecca Atkinson & Ben Batt, stars of TV's award winning "Shameless" started the race & presented the prizes (see above)
Gary had an excellent run despite only deciding to race when he woke up on Sunday morning! I was next A&T finisher running with my daughter, Laura, who was first lady. Josie was next (& 2nd lady) continuing to improve with ever race. Ian was next; despite drinking 8 pints the previous night supporting England (lost cause springs to mind!) Clare completed the A&T line up; she had another great run & in her own words – “I didn't come anywhere near last and am chuffed to bits!”

Morecambe 10km - by Garry Baines
7 A&T runners made the trip to Morecambe for the annual 10k race. A fresh sea breeze and partially undulating course restricted finishing times.
Shaun Moran was first home in 37:08 and duly took the V50 prize. Alan Hilton continues to impress and clocked another sub 40 10k in 39:39.
Greg Ruscoe struggled a little and was perhaps disappointed with his time of 42:58.
Close behind was a grafting Steve Foster who crossed in 43:23.
Yours truly took another step forward on the comeback trail with an improving 45:37.
Sue Fletcher and Carole Baines enjoyed a close tussle throughout the race with Sue coming home 7 seconds ahead in 46:46.

Membership update- Mark Lysycia
If any members are NOT receiving e-mails from the club please would you let me know immediately. Also, if anyone has a new e-mail address, new home address or new telephone number home and mobile could you let me know.
New club "more mile" short sleeve t-shirts in royal blue are finally going to be here(I am told) by next week. We have all sizes and most of you may have seen me wearing one at the club. These are a slightly different design to the previous ones but look just as smart. The ladies are a new cut entirely and I hope to be able to show everyone when they arrive. As always, please e-mail myself marklysycia@yahoo.co.uk or Suzanne soozyg@hotmail.co.uk
your sizes and quantity!
Forgot to announce last week, another new member, Rick Hart, has joined us, so a warm A+T welcome to Rick.
Please check the A+T web site as Terry Gardner has done a good job in updating the photo section on the home page showing a lot of members at various races and social events. Well worth a quick look to see all those happy faces and the few " oh this is agony" expressions caught in races.
We are just creeping up ever so slightly in the member profile section and are now on 36! sorry to be a pain but if in doubt drop myself or Claire an e-mail claroj@hotmail.com to ask us what you need to do. The more we get on the better it will look and Terry G is waiting to input them on the system.
Finally, it's mine and Derek's charity 5K run next Wednesday 7pm as I'm sure you all know, it would be great to have a good turn out and every runner gets a goody bag, there will be prizes, spot prizes and a free pastie in the club afterwards.
Thanks
Mark

George's Smile Charity Race - by Clare Unsworth
George's Smiles Race 19th June
Hi all, a friend of mine has organised a charity fun race on 19th June around Pennington Flash (5K). I know some of you will already know about the race or will have had the entry form from Ray. A few people have been asking who they should make cheques payable to and I've now got more information on that.
I'm going to have entry forms and numbers and you can pay me and I'll pass it on to the organisers. I'll bring them with me to training sessions or you can facebook or email me claroj@hotmail.com
Would be great if a few of us could do this run and support a good cause!

Henderson's End Fell Race-" A local race for local people"
Simon Ford was up front leading the way, unaware that Mark ruscoe was steadily catching him.....that was until Mark said "I'm catching you!" and Simon quickly upped the pace and made sure he was first blue vest home. Not something I recall Coe and Ovett doing in the 80's.
Mark came in seconds behind (D'oh!!).
Marcus had another great run and is loving his fell running, and Pete, still easing his way back in, looked strong.
Greg Ruscoe was out for his first fell race and put in a great run, sprinting to the finish line with a blooded knee after a fall. He enjoyed the event so much that he may end his karaoke career to concentrate on his hill reps.
Welcome also to Barry Allman and Stuart Adamson who ran their first fell race in A&T colours.
After the race, most of us went for a couple of pints in a local pub, and unfortunately it must have been Acid House night. Like a load of old duffers we sat with our pints of real ale, moaning about 'the din' from the speakers.
Results as follows;
1st Danny Hope - Pudsey & Bramley 37:32
14th Simon Ford 44.51
15th Mark Ruscoe 44:57
25th Paul Jackson 47:53
35th Marcus Taylor 50:32
38th Pete Mulleady 51:46
47th Greg Ruscoe 53:46
50th Stuart Adamson 54:20
65th Barry Allman 61:03
Don't forget there are more fell races this week on Wednesday at Holcombe and on Sunday at Rochdale.
Cycling Report
Just a quick note to say well done to all the cyclists who did the ride tonight and especially to Ray, Michelle, Gary A and John H who made their first appearance on the group rides.
I think the format worked well with a few miles together as a group and then some faster miles with your own ability before meeting up at the end.
The next ride is in 2 weeks time and we'll probably do something similar.
Again well done and its great to see so many people trying something a bit different.

Buxton Half by Malc Collins
The Buxton half marathon on Sunday 6th June was a family affair, accompanied by my wife Yuk-Lam, our little monsters Abbey (7) and Lucas (4) and friends, husband and wife, John & Lisa Bradley and their kiddies Amelia (7) and Regan (1). Our journey across to Buxton was very cloudy and rather wet at times. But as we arrived the rain cleared and the sun shone. We had a lovely picnic in the pavilion gardens and then got ready for the race. The sun was now getting quite warm and I was worried that we were going to suffer, especially John, an Astley local with a reasonable amount of running experience as well as years of football under his belt. Definitely a target for Jacket Man, Mark get him signed up!
As we made our way to the start we met up with Steve Coleman and Derek Coop which made it a trio from A&T to take on a more demanding and a very hilly half on a very warm sunny afternoon. The race got underway and Steve spearheaded the A&T attack closely followed by me. The first 3 miles were all up hill with about 700ft of climb which helped to string out the field. Steve got away from me but in the first down hill section I caught him up, we had a little tussle in the hot sun before we decided to run together for a couple of miles. At 6 miles Steve was too fast for me and I wished him well and settled down to a more comfortable pace. Steve warned me he wasn’t keen on the heat and the hills and maybe I’d see him again. I followed him for over 3 miles upon which I could see him slightly slowing. The sun had gone in and I felt strong enough to try and chase Steve down. At 10 miles I managed to overtake him and carry on with a very steady strong pace. The heat didn’t suit me, I just kept pouring water over my head but I was relishing the challenge of the tough hills, that’s the mountain goat in me! I finished in 1hr 33min 27 sec. Steve came in shortly after in approx 1hr 35min. Derek in approx 1 hr 45min and John in 1 hr 47min. I hope I’ve got these times reasonably accurate as I cannot find any official times yet and I had to take Abbey and Amelia to look at the ducklings on the pond straight after the finish, no rest for the runner!

Forthcoming Fell Races by Paul Jackson
Holcombe Two Towers (AS) Wed 9th June 7.15pm
This is a 4m/1300' ascent race and is a little belter. Last year we did it in torrential conditions but it looks to be a dryer event this year. Some tough scrambles to negotiate but a fun race all the same.
£3.00 entry on the day and the venue is the Hare & Hounds pub (always a good sign), on the A676, Bury.
This is an A&T Club Champs Race. I can't make this one due to a parents evening but there'll be plenty going up. As it's an earlier start than usual look to be leaving the Rail Station by 6.15 at the latest to avoid the mad dash.
Knowl Hill (BM) Sun 13th June 11.00am
This is a 6m/1300' ascent run, and is also a nice run around the hills and reservoirs of Rochdale. £4.00 entry on the day and the venue is the Brown Cow pub, Norden, Rochdale. This is both an A&T Club Champs Race and a Grand Prix race.

Mark and Derek's 50th Birthday Charity 5km
As you know its Mark and Derek's 50th Birthday Charity 5km run on Wednesday 16th June, start 7pm, To make sure the race goes without any problems we would need a few volunteers to help out on the day.
1 or 2 - Car Park Attendants (you can still race)
2 or 3 - Course marshals
If you can help please could you let either myself or Mark L know asap. Also, for the goody bags/pasties,it would be useful if you could let myself or Mark know if you are doing the race so he can gauge how much to order. Mark has sampled the pasties and am told they are delicious!
The race itself is £3.00 to enter and each finisher will get a goody bag, with prizes also on the night. There is free pastie provided later in the Welfare club so its well worth it and all money raised will go towards the Gill Pimblott Charity.
Registration will open at 6pm but if you want to enter now simply fill out the attached form and give it to Mark L at training and collect your number on the night.
