Adios Amigos!

My Marathon Experience by Matt Crompton

After 6 months of waiting, endless training and painful sessions of physio my marathon adventure finally was upon me. It started on the Saturday morning and after a pleasant train ride to London, Jayne and me met up with my A&T training buddy Jon Hyde and his better half Karen to make the trip across London to the Expo. Once we had registered is was time for a mooch around the stalls, check in with my charity and soak up the atmosphere at the pasta party. We also met up with Pete Chan who gave me yet another lesson in bargain hunting, with Asics giving away cereal bars on their stand. I think Pete ended up with about a dozen of them!

Once the Expo was out of the way it was time to check in to the hotel and then to Leicester Sq to meet Pete again for plate fulls of pasta, ice cream and get some last minute tips. Conversation was dominated by marathons, both past and present and by the end of the evening i had the final motivational top up i needed ready for the big day....cheers Pete.

After a reasonable sleep i was up and about early for breakfast and then off to meet Jon to travel down to the start together. I was on the red start at Greenwich with about 20,000 others but i was surprised by how organised and easy it was to check in, use the loos etc. After ditching my bag on one of the lorries early i made my way over to my starting point, poncho on, as it was starting to rain and managed to be the 2nd person in my pen at just gone 09:05. I started in pen 4 and by the time they had cut the tapes to let all the runners merge together i found myself in the envious position of being on the starting straight actually able to see the start line! Not getting beaten by an 8 foot Rhino suddenly seemed a bit less daunting prospect as he was at least 300 feet behind me.

I crossed the line only 1 1/2 minutes after the official start time and was soon into my stride, feeling comfy with no sign of the troublesome cold i'd had for most of the week before. Cutty Sark soon came along as did the warmer weather with the rain a distant memory from 6 miles earlier. It was around this point i bumped into a runner who was next to me at the start. Scott, who ran for a local club in Watford, was looking for 3:20 and we proceeded to drag each other round for the next 10 miles. Tower Bridge was as fantastic as described with the crowds 6 deep and soon after we saw the elite men flying by on the other side of the road, which gave me a much needed boost.

Canary Wharf was the next milestone i was aiming for and it was good to see one of my friends cheering me on. This was where the going started to get really tough, and although the wheels didnt come off, they certainly did start to feel a bit wonky. All i could think about was getting to 20 and then it was only a 10K and i was done! I can just about recall crossing 20 miles but after that it's all a bit of a mystery and i was only focused on trying to not let my pace drop off too much to the finish. I do remember the noise and atmosphere on Embankment and the Mall. I felt like a gladiator running to the finish and all the hard work was worth it for the feeling when i crossed the line.

After picking up my medal and goody bag it was time to meet Mrs C and celebrate. After a much needed shower we met up with Jon again and went to Covent Garden where i enjoyed my first beer since NYE and a free meal....get in!! After sinking more than a few cold ones it was off to bed, and was followed by a few nice days in the city. The sight seeing was great although steps were an absolute nightmare to go down as i felt like i'd been shot in both thighs.

I have to say that the London Marathon has got to be the most well organised event i have ever experienced. If you can cope with the logistics of masses of people, public transport and fear of being beaten by a man dressed as a rhino its definitely for you. I'll certainly be doing my best to get a place next year.

Finally can i thank everyone who has supported me during the training and build up to the race. Pete Chan for all his advice and mentoring to the endless questions i've asked, Mrs C for putting up with me for the last 5 months and a special mention to all the marathon warriors (you know who you are). The training sessions have been great and the support everyone has shown each other has been remarkable. Provisionally its looking like i've raised in excess of £2600 for Children with Leukeamia so cheers to everyone who was able to sponsor me.

Cheers
Matt

Marathon Weekend - by Maria Lowe

This weekend Sean and myself headed again for my third marathon and Sean's 8th attempt. We got the 6:55 train and arrived in good time. there we were heading confidently to jump onto the circle line train, to realise we were heading out of london into another district, after blaming each other we eventually got back onto another train heading to Tower Hill, to find the district line to the Expo Centre. I was already feeling tired and we had only got to the expo centre.

Every year we say to each other "we wont be too long, we'll grab our numbers then shoot off". Two hours later and a few carrier bags heavier we set off to find our hotel room.

After a comfortable night, although waking every few hours to check the watch, we were on our way to the train station, im there all quiet! In fact thats the only time i am quiet, is on the way to a race. Sean meanwhile is chatting away to a runner from Birminghan and telling him how to run his marathon and offering him advice etc. We find the good for age start, but im freezing as the temperature drops and you would think after all the years running i'd remember to bring more kit. kindly a runner from Altrincham offers me his hand towel and I wrap this modestly around my legs, dont worry he had layers on too..Im not that selfish.

It rains, i'm cold and the teeth are chattering away, but i'm keeping positive, a patient of mine from middleton came over to ask me what to do with his tight calf well i didnt bring my treatment couch, so i told him to just you know,.. run!! (he was fine pre-race nerves).

The time flew, the rain stopped and the race began, the middleton group shouted "maria run with us were doing 7 min miles" so i did but the pace was picking up to 6;30, and for me marathon pacing is the key and i didnt want to be struggling too soon. So i calmy let them go, along with the fly and the carrot and the buzzlight year guy..

Miles later im running still to the pace i wanted, passing quite a few people who look as though there running a 10k, by mile 19 who do i see, but a Middleton runner so i sneek past, to cheer him on. then another middleton runner, im thinking im so glad i didnt go with them. i passed the fly along the last few miles he looked as though hed been swatted, bless! Then the crowd were cheering for buzz lightyear, however i thought to infinity and beyond there is no way i would live it down with the kids if buzz beat me!!! Turbo legs were still charged and I battled along Bird cage Walk, can you believe I finished alongside a carrot and a leprachaun. How can i celebrate my success with them two cartoons in my finishing photo!!!!

I was really pleased with my finishing time, and wanted to go find Sean. After trying to look good, whilst having my photo taken i hobbled over to find sean under a tree looking a kind of greeny yellowish shade, feeling ill. He could'nt understand me, so i let him come round whilst chatting to an essex runner about our times. We eventually shuffled back to the hotel looking like two drunks, me swaying and making strange noises and Sean throwing up every few minutes.

After a well deserved rest we arrived back home, and the support from Astley runners, patients and family have made the event all the worthwhile, we really enjoyed the weekend and for anyone thinking of running a marathon then we would highly recommend doing London.

Well done to all those that ran the marathon along with the supporters who made the race. Cant wait for the next one.....................

Social Evening - Sunday 27th June

LIFE ON THE RUN - Questions and Answers Night with 'Dougie Tobutt'

Sunday 27th June - At the Miners Welfare Club

Free to all members and friends of A&T.

Dougie Tobutt ran his first marathon in Bolton in 1981. He has now completed 116 marathons all over the world, visiting 44 countries and the only continent he hasn’t covered is Antarctica ! He is busy knitting a scarf for that trip!

He was advised to stop running 22 years ago after being diagnosed with arthritis of the hips. The specialist told him if he continued to run he would need replacement hips within 3 years. The specialist also said he had the hips of an 80 year old man. Dougie still has his own hips and his hips celebrated their 100th birthday recently!!

Saturday Run

There's a 10 mile Saturday morning easy-paced run from Gin Pit this weekend at 9.30am.

LONDON MARATHON 2010 – The return of the Fly - By Pete Chan

Travelling to Excel to register on Saturday was a Marathon in itself and with the look of the weather it was going to be a very hot race. There are many things to like and dislike about the London Marathon weekend. The obvious liking is why we all do the sport and that is the chance to run a Marathon is such a big city with 30 odd thousand others. The downside is the commercialism of the event which has now grown to monster proportions … Registration at Excel is a real trudge to get to and only serves to get you along to an exhibition of running gear, running tours and presentations by some ex-‘greats’ and C list celebs. On the plus side it does serve to get you ‘in the mood’ …. Oh and the Asics stand continues to give away free breakfast chewy bars.

I met up with two of my fellow A&T runners, Matt C and Jon Hyde and had the obligatory piccie taken and agreed to meet up for dinner later, then it was off into the capital for a bit of exploring. I decided to give West Ham Vs Wigan (just 15 mins away from Excel) a miss to avoid the unnecessary misery of watching the Latics. So it was Ice cream by the Tower and then a tube to Leicester square to meet up with Matt and Jane Crompton for some ‘fuel’ at ‘Bella Italia’. As we were waiting to go in I clocked the next restaurant was a Chiquittos and people were tucking into huge plates of Burritos and Chilli and lots of other tasty looking stuff. I was finding it very hard to get excited about my plate of Pasta in Tomato sauce … at the meal though, spirits were good and although we had a marathon to run the morning after, all were extremely relaxed.

Race morning dawned and it mercifully looked overcast – hurray!!! … I donned my gear and went out for a 1 mile jog near the hotel and felt ok, got back, shower, breakfast and off to the start. Following all the forecasts of a blistering hot morning it turned out to be raining!!! …. I cast my mind back to Matt the previous night telling me he planned to do a rain dance .. at the time I thought he was joking but must say I was very impressed with the outcome … I wondered if he has an ‘Indian name’ as well?

Saw Sean and Maria at the start and had a quick chat comparing illness/injuries, then we were all underway dead on 09.45 am …Great one too from the front of the Red start…first pb of the day 4 secs to get across the line in London!!!... It is a strange feeling watching the clock get closer to the start as there has been so much training leading up to it all, your only thoughts are “I just want to feel right” ……alas… within the first half mile I knew it was going to be a long morning. At each mile checkpoint the pace was getting slower so I dusted off plan ‘B’ … try to get to the finish and enjoy the atmosphere… Recently there have been quite a few attempts at various ‘world records’ on the course which has lead to some quite nippy athletes haring round the Marathon in fancy dress. I made 8 miles in 51 mins and was really struggling by now, only to be passed by a runner dressed as a Fly, closely followed by, and I quote the crowd “nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah BATMAN” …….. to say I was feeling a bit out of the fun and a little subdued by this point would be an understatement.

Back in 98 I ran in London after having not trained for a good while and have got endless ribbing from my family about being outkicked in the Mall by an 8ft bottle of ‘Gatorade’ .. in fact every time I tell my pals I am running London again I get the same …. “Ooohh I hear the bottle is training at altitude and he’s in great form” ……Text msgs “I hear the bottle ran a sub 35 10k last week”.. I could not stop thinking of ‘The Fly’ and the super hero chasing him. If I could have gotten my hands on a large tin of Vapona at that point he would have got it right between the feelers.

At 12 miles I came across a mate of mine from the last 2 London Marathons called Jeremy Gold a Rossendale based Londoner who runs for the Victoria Park and Tower Hamlets club. He too was having a hard day on the road… “did you see that bloody Fly” he said.
Jeremy got me through lots of bad patches and vice versa as we ran the last 14 miles together, constantly encouraging each other through the grimaces and aches and pains….. and telling each other “don’t stop”… so much for enjoying the atmosphere!! Sean came by me at around 19 miles himself not at his peak but grinding out a great performance after his recent hamstring injury problems…

At 22 miles we both got a welcome boost as we passed the Fly bending over and rubbing his legs (well just two of them) ……. Not quite on his back turning circles and kicking them in the air… but at least it looked like we had him beaten … we laughed at how elated we was to overtake a six foot insect …. And better was yet to come just before Big Ben we caught and passed “nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah BATMAN” ……..this was a huge relief as we both had family watching and waiting just round the corner. AT 600m to go I knew that the magical 3 hours had gone unless I could have mustered a greased greyhound type finish… but it wasn’t to be. I crossed the line together with Jeremy in 3:00hrs 31 secs. Not my fastest Marathon but after 3 hrs of discomfort it is certainly the one I am proudest of….

Dropping out would have been an easy option but you have to live with that ultimately and I was very pleased to have made it to the finish, battered and sore but self respect intact.

There were some great performances from A&T in London and the more people we can in the race to experience this amazing event the better.

Well done to everyone who ran on Sunday… I am sure you will see their stories.

100 Mile Bike Ride Report - By Gary S

After months of preparation and some hard training the day had arrived for the 100 mile challenge from Atherton Train Station to Penrith.

John Lee had kindly volunteered to be our support vehicle and mechanic in case of any problems along the way and brought wife Sandra and Marie Moran for support, we dedicated the ride in memory of Angela Marie’s sister and was raising over £500.00 for MacMillan.

On a perfect day for cycling the four of us (Gary S, Craig B, Sean S and Brenda) set off on our first leg which was a 35 mile leg to Garstang

It the nice to see Andy Coates join us for the first 10 miles of our journey, unfortunately Andy had to be back for a birthday party so couldn’t do the full ride. Paul Bohannon also bumped into us at Chorley and rode along with us to Preston before making his way home.

We encountered our first problem of the ride when Sean got a puncture around Preston but managed to get it sorted with Paul’s assistance. We arrived at Garstang making good progress for a 30 minute toilet / refreshment stop, 35 miles gone and 65 to go!

The 2nd leg was a 40 mile ride through Garstang/Lancaster/Kendal, for those who did the Radcliffe 10km last week you remember the sting in the tail, well this 40 miler had a sting to say the least called ‘Shap’.

As we made our way through Lancaster and over the half way point we entered pure countryside and lovely fast roads which are ideal for cycling with little traffic, at this point my computer was indicating 17.5mph average which was well above expectation. Going through Kendal the surroundings started to change to just pure hills and what a stretch in store, 10 absolute gruelling miles of climb after climb which made Newbrook Road look flat!

At the 75 mile point we decided we needed to stop for refreshments and i pulled over and waiting for the others. The conversation and laughter of the previous miles had gone and our serious competitive faces had arrived as reality was now on us that this ride was ‘bloody hard’ and definitely not for inexperienced cyclists. Brenda to her own admission had hit the wall and was feeling very unstable and a bit delirious. In the distance i could see a road which was without doubt the biggest climb i had ever encountered; to put it into prospective there was snow in the distance.

We set off for the final 25 miles to Penrith towards this killer climb; i got to the top and pulled over waiting for the others with Sean not far behind. Craig followed just in front of Brenda who punched the air with pride as she made the climb and it was all downhill now into Penrith.

Penrith arrived with a huge sense of achievement but that was short lived as Sean said we had only done 94 miles at the point so we continued for another 6 miles to make our 100.

The 100 miles finally done in just under 6 hours, we all had the A&T customary handshakes and made our way to John’s van for a change of clothes and a much needed meal in the local pub.

A great day was had by all and a real sense of pride by myself who in December after my illness wanted to do something a little different other than just running. I’d like to personally thank Craig for being there every step of the way and to Sean who although not a member of A&T is Mr Reliable and has helped with the training. Let’s not forget Brenda who only decided to do the ride 2 weeks and is an absolute amazing athlete for her age, i will never forget how she managed to climb those hills and never once show any signs of giving up when countless others would have done.

Conversation amongst us soon got onto the next challenge next year and it would be great if more members join us, keep posted to the blog.

On the blog you asked for any contributions that people may want on there. I know this is a very big cheek (I am known for my cheek by those who close to me). I am doing Race for Life 5 k jog/run on 16 May round Pennington Flash and wondered if any of the club members would like to sponsor me. The money raised goes to cancer research. No pressure - if they are sponsoring someone else, doing the run themselves or have their own personal reasons for not wanting too, no hard feelings, its just me being cheeky :-).

I have just joined properly this week and have been coming out with the club for a couple of weeks, so realise that a majority of the group wont know me.

Anyway, anyone who does wish to sponsor me can do so on the link below. Any amount, large or small, is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks for considering this for the blog. Thanks again

Radcliffe 10km - Written by Garry Baines

27 A&T members made the short trip to Radcliffe, to test their ability in the new Radcliffe multi-terrain 10km. Conditions were near perfect and with the recent dry weather, the ground was firm under foot.

The first part of the course took in part of the old course along the trails, then we encountered road, cobbles, canal paths, grass and more trails with the odd hill or too thrown in. Certainly not a PB course, although one established member managed to do just that.

Pete Chan had a great race and certainly put the throttle down in an attempt to reach the DW Stadium in good time for the Arsenal match. Pete was first home for the club in 36:40 and had a good day all round, given the result of the match.

Simon Ford looks to be finding his form again, but after a tremendous tussle with Shaun Moran, just fell 4 seconds behind Shaun who came home in 36:40.

Malc Collins loves this sort of terrain and his experience on the hills showed as he beat Gary Atherton by 2 seconds in 39:19.

Gary Stevens thought the severity of the race was second only to the Roddlesworth Roller, but considering he is still in his comeback faze, his time of 40:44 was more than respectable.

Next came our first lady, Josie Maley, who finished 4th overall in 41:43, adding to her collection of prizes this season. Terry Gardiner was hot on her heels, finishing in 41:47.

Alan Hilton, back after illness, crossed the line in 42:42, followed by Mark Lysycia in 43:42 and Greg Ruscoe, making an impressive debut in the Road Championships in 44:00. With youth on his side, we can expect greater things from Greg in the future. Craig Bradbury and the ever improving Matt Crompton finished within 5 seconds of each other with Steve Foster in close pursuit.

Brenda Wane, getting back to some fitness, finished as 2nd A&T lady in 46:35. Ray Taylor tried desperately to catch her, but spurred on by the smell of bacon behind him in the form of Ian Hamilton, Ray romped home to a PB of 46:56 just a week after his marathon, with Ian 2 seconds behind.

Dave Crowe ran steadily in 48:06 and just out-stripped partner Suzanne Gregory (48:53), who nevertheless had a great race.

Carole Baines suffered from the exertions of Blackpool but had the pleasure of putting one over her other half, yours truly, the gap being just over a minute.

Paul Basnett, who restricted himself to 2 pints of Guinness on Saturday evening and Michelle Fuller, both ran at a steady pace and Vanessa Thomson, showed a return to form, by beating her mate Michelle Fairclough by 9 seconds.

Finally there were 2 great efforts from Elaine Hodson and Tracy Parry, who stuck to the task well and can only benefit from tackling such a tough course.

Next Road race in the Club Championships and in the CLGP is the Haigh Hall 4mile race on Wednesday 12th May at 7.30p.m.

Rivington Bike Ride Report

On a fantastic night for cycling we had 8 cyclists (myself, John L, Andy Neary, Mike Neary, Sean S, Craig B, Brenda and Tony Quinn) turn up for this challenging 30 mile ride over the top of Rivington.  It was great to see a local legend Mr Mike Neary who's tales of his running days always seem to crop up amongst the older runners at A&T, he was a guy who use to run his easy running at 6 m/mile pace and was at best a 2.19 marathon runner, due to injury he's now got a reputation as a 'animal on a bike'.

Andy Coates unfortuantly had to pull out due to injury.

Bianca Stevens and Cellia Lee made their debuts, for those not in the know these are the 2 brand new machines bought on the Thomas Smith Fasteners bike to work scheme.  Cellia had already been seen doing over 33mph through Tyldesley on Friday night.

As well as Bianca i was trying the shoes and cleats for the first time and what a ride to try them with monster climbs over the top of Rivington.

We set off at a steady pace for the first few miles before we hit the first tough climb towards Smithills.  I was at the front giving Bianca her first taste of hill climbing with Neary Snr on my back wheel, as we got half way up the climb i was starting to huff and puff a bit and Neary Snr was hardly breathing, not bad for a 61 yr old!  We turned left at the Black Dog Belmont and made our way over the top of Rivington on a gruelling climb before a massive descent into Rivington, John on Cellia was clocking over 43mph at this point!

After a fast stretch down Chorley Old Road we made our way home back to the train station in around 1hr 40 mins, a brisk pace for such a tough course.

Once again a word for Brenda who never fails to amaze us blokes with her dogged determination on these hilly rides, she is one tough cookie!

Blackpool Half and Full Marathon - by Matt Crompton

On a warm and sunny day 10 runners made the short trip up the motorway to Blackpool for the half and full marathon. It was an early start for all to get through all the pre-race rituals in time for a 9am start but even Steve Coleman made it with time to spare. Conditions for the race were good, with no wind but it was pretty warm, especially for the runners doing 2 loops of the course.

Ill start with the Half, saving the best (marathoners) till last. 5 A&T’rs were running the half and went through the usual formalities at the start with handshakes and encouragement in full flow. The first half mile or so was really congested and I personally managed to catch a flier, finding myself leading the way for A&T! It didn’t last long though as Gary Atherton came strolling through followed by Steve Coleman looking more like Usain Bolt than someone who had an other 12.6 miles to run.

1st place went to Dave Lockett of Salford Harriers in 1:11:54. Gary Atherton was 1st A&T runner home in 1:22:26 and very happy with yet another PB. Steve Coleman was next in 1:25:01 in 8th or 9th half of the year followed by the silent assassin Mark Beresford in 1:29:51. I was next to finish in 1:35:58 with another PB and Michaela Shaw, who was a little out of sorts finished in 1:47:10.

Once we had all finished we moved around the course to cheer on, take pictures of, run with and give drinks to all the marathoners. We all watched everyone pass through the 21 mile marker looking comfy and then got a good spec at the finish to watch al the runners cross the line. 1st place in the mens race went to Mike Flatley (not the one out of Riverdance) in 2:39:44 and Adela salt won the womens race in 2:57:01.

Dan Reason, who was using Blackpool as a training run was the first A&T runner home finishing in 3:28:46. Dans looking really good for Edinburgh in 6 weeks based on this performance and how well training is going. Next was Sue Fletcher in 3:39:36. Sue looked strong all the way round and could still manage a smile on the sprint finish while holding off a late charge from a fellow runner. Carole Baines was next home in a fantastic 2:44:43 getting a much deserved cuddle from hubby Garry on finishing. Ray Taylor crossed next in 3:52:16. Ray has been struggling with injury over the last few weeks and the mental challenge over his last 6 miles with his body literally falling apart shows what a strong character Ray is. Michelle Fairclough completed the A&T line up to finish with 4:25:50 and was another who showed great strength on the day following months of injuries and minimal training for 26 miles.

Thanks must go to Steve Foster who made his way round the course on his bike, topping up the runners with encouragement and isotonic drinks and also all the friends and family who supported the club on the day.

Can I just take this opportunity to thank all the Blackpool runners for all the encouragement, support and help they have given me and the others training for marathons this year. Without this, I for one wouldn’t be in the position I am with my marathon less than 2 weeks away. The spirit and teamwork from the group has been fantastic and shows truly what the club stands for and values.

Well done everyone!
Matt

Blackpool Marathon - by Carole Baines

After making all the usual pre-race checks – porridge, water, number pinned on vest, watch charged etc., I found myself at 6.55am desperately loading up the fridge with Stellas for later in the day. It nearly sparked a minor domestic with Garry when he couldn’t find them and I ended up locating them myself – as if I didn’t have enough to deal with –what with running a marathon and everything!

Anyway off to Blackpool – met up with the others – Michelle, Sue, Ray, Dan and the half marathoners – Matt, Gary and Michaela – and killed a bit of time queuing for the loos as usual.

Perfect temperature of 9 degrees to start with and I was trying to keep coach Chan’s advice in mind – don’t set off too fast, just let the race take you – so I did and really enjoyed the first 5 miles. It was at that point, when my weak left ankle started to niggle, that I realised I’d forgotten to take the Ibuprofen. Between then & 7 miles, where I knew Garry would be standing, I focussed on working out how I could yell to him in the shortest possible sentence that I needed the tablets and they were in the bag! Anyway Garry came up trumps and told me to keep on running whilst he got them and then he tried to catch up with me – well I was running that fast at this point that it was a real struggle for him I can tell you. (only joking!)

Once I’d taken the tablets my mind felt a bit more rested (not my body though unfortunately) and I started to enjoy the race again. The next 12 miles passed without incident really until I hit the wall. Miles 19 to 23 were really tough – I felt terrible and it was all I could do to slog it out, it was at this point that I started hyperventilating. I managed to get my breathing under control with some positive thinking – perhaps??

Miles 23 to 26 were just a case of getting the job done – the sooner the better. Unfortunately my speed had dropped but I still thought I could get under 3:45. As I headed up the (steep) slope that is the last 200mts, it was great to hear the A&T bunch cheering me on. I couldn’t look at them – it took far too much energy for that. Eventually I crossed the finish line in 3:44:43 and couldn’t run a step further!

At the risk of sounding like an Oscar winner I’d like to say thanks to so many people.....Garry and Cerys, of course, who supported me fantastically all through my training and my moaning and so well on the day. The marathon training group who have been absolutely fantastic to run with – Matt the organiser, Sue, Ray, Jon, Dan, Michaela, Mark, Maria, Sean and numerous others. The ½ marathoners who cheered me in Blackpool after they had finished plus Jane and Lynn, Mike and Leanne Reason and also Steve Foster and Brennan for their support on the bike. Thanks also to Peter Chan for a brilliant marathon schedule and lots of ongoing support and for all the A&T members who passed on some great advice and their best wishes.

Well done to Dan, Sue, Ray and Michelle for completing the marathon and to Gary, Matt, Mark B, Steve C and Michaela for completing the half.

Oh and as for those Stellas – well they stayed put and I had a couple of German Weissbiers instead – well I reckon when you’ve run a marathon you’re allowed to be contrary.

Wardle Skyline Fell Race- Saturday 10th April

Another good turnout saw 9 A&T at Wardle Village for the 7-mile/1250’ ascent fell race. Being a Grand Prix race also there was a cracking turnout of 239 runners.

The good weather had been arranged and although a bit warm for most it was a great day to be out there.

Things started really well and we were after an initial run on track and a downhill section! (Not a usual Fell start), we were soon tackling the steep hill onto the moors. Some good open running terrain on the tops and three hills to contend with. Now I think we all knew there was a sting in the tail at the end of the race from the race profile I put on the blog, but even I was lulled into thinking that the downhill run down the cobbled path would lead us back to the village and the finish line, only to be demoralised when I saw the runners snaking up a final hill to the right.

Then it was a fast downhill tack run to Wardle finish were drinks and applause awaited…..well for the most of us anyway!

Lyndsay had a different idea.

After posing for Dave Woodhead’s camera on the top of the moors she went over and badly sprained her ankle.
Dave Woodhead stopped taking photos immediately and gave assistance. Help was summoned via a local fella and the marshals. Mountain Rescue were soon on their way and Lyndsay was soon being stretchered off the hill with her ankle in support .
Word got back to the other club runners who were keen to ensure she was okay.
Down she came in the back of the M.R. ambulance, all smiles and in safe hands.
The Mountain Rescue team were first rate and Dave Woodhead is an absolute gentlemen and a hero for dropping everything to help Lynds. The local man whose name I do not know deserves equal praise as do the marshals and John Armstrong the race organiser. Dave and John have contacted Mark and Lynds to offer their support since, which I feel was far above and beyond what could have been expected of them. A big thanks to all of you!!.

The club are to make a donation to Rossendale & Pendle Mountain Rescue to show our appreciation. They are volunteers whose service survives on charitable contributions, and their work is invaluable to those running on the hills.

Back to the race..

Mark Ruscoe was first blue vest home edging out Simon by just under 30 seconds. Then me very closely followed by Dave Ruscoe with a fine run and Marcus Taylor who is really getting into the fells. Brenda was next in and was also first V45 Lady, Well done Brenda!
Abbie was next, smiling all the way, and another steady run on the fells. Helen Minshall dug another gutsy performance, followed by Tracy Parry who was running her first club fell race. Well done Tracy! I’m sure you’ll be back for more. All in all a successful day for the club in terms of the Grand Prix but more importantly Lyndsay is back safe with a bit of rest to look forward to.

Full race photos available on Dave Woodhead's site http://www.woodentops.org.uk/

Next up for the Grand Prix is Pendle Cloughs (AL) on 8th May (Nav skills required) and for the Club Champs is Holcombe Two Towers (AS) 4ml/1300’ on the 9th June (a cracker!). There is also Henderson’s End fell race on the 3rd June from Rivington which is another good one for the newcomers. Further details to follow.

1st Adam Osborne- Leeds City 45:41
37th Mark Ruscoe 53:33
43rd Simon Ford 53:57
85th Paul Jackson 59:43
96th David Ruscoe 1:00:33
106th Marcus Taylor 1:01:34
131st Brenda Wane 1:03:54
218th Abbie Eckersley 1:21:03
232nd Helen Minshall 1:34:53
236th Tracy Parry 1:40:03

Race Organiser

On behalf of the club I would like to say a massive thank you to Terry Gardiner for all the work he has put into our club. Not sure most people realise how much Terry has put in but here is a short history.
Early last year he started helping Gary Stevens with the race organisation and not long after took on the Club Secretary role and did lots of work behind the scenes getting loads of things organised. Not long after that Gary was ill and Terry then took on the Race Organiser role. All the races he has organised have been very successful and we all benefit from that not least by lower subs. The success hasn’t been by chance, it is down to the amount of planning and hard work that Terry has put in to make sure they are successful. It also had its moments such as nearly getting arrested by the Police! He has also set up a superb new website. For some time now Terry has wanted to give up the Race Organiser role but agreed to carry on until we had someone else. That pretty much sums up Terry though, prepared to take on a load of extra work and stress just to help out our club. It’s been an absolute pleasure working with him. I think he well deserves to now take a bit of a back seat and just enjoy his running. All the very best Terry from all at A&T.

Cheers

Pete

Message from Radcliffe AC

Just a reminder to anyone attending our race on 18th April they can enter on line at ukresults.net or on the day At Radcliffe Cricket Club, Homer Street (Opposite Bob-In Motor spares) off Bolton Road Radcliffe. The start is a 5 minute or so warm up down Cams Lane. Road or trail shoes should be fine, if it stays dry I'd go for road shoes as the trail is quite well drained.

Presentation and food available at the Cricket Club aftere the event.
All the best

Cross-country presentation

I was hoping to present this year’s awards at the last meeting (28/3) but the trophies were not ready in time

I was thinking about re-scheduling when I realised that it makes sense to move the cross-country presentation to the end of the year along with the other presentations; so that’s what we will do

This will give the trophy winners the recognition they deserve along with the road / fell trophy winners

Message from Matt Crompton

Some of you may know that I’m doing the London Marathon this year. Not content with all the hard work and time that goes into preparing for a marathon I also thought I would give myself another challenge and try and raise some money for charity as well. I’ve chosen to run for Children with Leukaemia and I am hoping to raise a minimum of £2500.
I’ve chose this charity as it's one close to my families heart. A few years ago we lost a good friend to a very rare form of Leukaemia for which nothing could be done for him. It was difficult to watch an adult suffering with this awful illness and I can't begin to imagine as a parent myself what it must be like seeing your child suffering with something like this.
So with this in mind, if anyone would like to sponsor a fat lad running 26.2 miles I have an on-line donations page (see the attached link) or for those who prefer the old fashioned way I’ll have my sponsor form with me at training over the next few weeks.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Training - Wednesday 7th April

Now the light evenings are back we will be using the trails again for some training sessions.

We’re going to kick off this Wednesday with a 5K using the Gin Pit race course. It’s an ideal opportunity to try the trails for the first time, see what the Gin Pit course is like if you’re racing it on the 11th or just enjoy a training session away from the roads.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Gentle Reminder

Hi all,
I am running the London Marathon on 25th April and I am raising money for Wigan and Leigh Hospice.
It is a fantastic cause and I am hoping that some of the good souls of A&T will help me to reach my sponsorship target.
You can sponsor me at my Just Giving page http://www.justgiving.com/denise-babynec

Thanks for your support.

Garstang Bike Ride

Just myself, Craig B and Andy Coates turned up for this Easter Saturday bike ride to Garstang (and back).  Once again Andrew was making all the pace at the front on the way to Garstang averaging an impressive 18mph all the way and showed no fear as he negotiated his way round Preston City Centre and the numerous roundabouts.  Myself and Craig wanted to see Easter Sunday in one piece with Craig almost ending up on the M65 at one stage!

We got to Garstang in just over 1hr 45 and enjoyed a quick coffee before setting off home.  The journey back was much tougher with a stiff wind and more up's than down's with Andrew once again having to dig in and work hard.  We stopped off at the Chorley McDonalds for some much needed grub before getting back to Atherton in around 4 hrs averaging 17mph for the whole journey of 70 miles.

'Andrew lets see you on the 100 miler, your only 30 miles short !'

Salford 10k - By Matt Crompton

On a dry and breezy Good Friday 12 A&T runners made the short trip up the East Lancs to run in the Salford 10K with a few runners hoping for PB's as the course is pretty flat and quick.

The start was a bit manic to say the least, with traffic stopped at the very last minute and runners all jostling for position. Everyone managed to get away without incident though for 2 laps of the finest sights Salford has to offer.

In a strong field 1st place in the mens race went to Mark Buckingham of Holmfirth Harriers in 29:59 and in the womens Sonia Samuels of Sale clocked 33:24 .

1st A&T runner home was Paul Mannion in 33:59 giving him 25th place overall. Next was Shaun Moran in 35:38 knocking 20 seconds off last years time. Hes beginning to look like a fine wine, getting better with age! Following Shaun was Simon Ford in 37:07 with Gary Atherton in pursuit finishing in 37:28 with a PB thrown in for good measure. Last minute arrival specialist Steve Coleman was next in 38:28 and showed no real sign of tiredness from his endless races. Maybe you could give Eddie Izzard a run for his money? It was great to see Gary Stevens continuing his road to recovery with a strong performance finishing in 38:47 followed by Mary Anne and John Lee in 38:58 and 39:37 respectively, with Mary Anne 5th lady home and John dipping under 40 for the first time (i think) since his injury problems. Josie Maley crossed in 40:40 and is another runner who is seeing benefit of the track efforts and longer runs. Work on the wine intake Josie and you'll be under 40 in no time! I was next over in 42:50, more than happy in my performance with a PB, with Ian Hamilton (running as Ray Taylor) next in 45:57 showing signs of getting back to form. Paul Basnett, who is still trying to get over the man flu (and we all know how bad that is) enjoyed his run of 52:05 and yet again proved what a great club man he is, with Tracey Parry bringing home the A&T field in 58:40.

Many thanks to the WAG's, ever faithful Gary Baines and photographer Andy Coates for spurring us all on. It does make a difference, as we all know. Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the Easter break and don't forget there is a run from Central on Sunday if anyone fancies it. 13 or 17 miles, meeting at 9:30.

Cheers

Matt
