Fell Grand Prix 2010- Lad's Leap Fell Race 28th March

Only two of us made the trip to Crowden in the Peak District to take part in the first fell Grand Prix race of the season.

We arrived at the venue at Crowden Campsite where there was a great atmosphere amongst superb scenery.

There were representatives from all the clubs in the Grand Prix to take part in what turned out to be a cracking fell race.

Results
1st Lloyd Taggart- Dark Peak 47:24
37th Mark Ruscoe 62:51
53rd Paul Jackson 65:27

146 Finishers

A good result in terms of the Grand Prix with Mark and I claiming 3rd and 5th places respectively overall.

The next Club Champs race at Wardle Skyline, Rochdale is also a Grand Prix race so the more runners the merrier.
See you there

Head Coach

All,
Unfortunately, Peter Chan has resigned as head coach from A&T
I am sure that the committee are not alone in wanting to thank Peter for all of the hard work that he has put in over the last year with the extremely detailed (and tough) training schedules and all of the bespoke marathon schedules.
Peter has always made himself available for advice and guidance which has proved invaluable to the marathon training group.

Coniston 14+ by Marcus Taylor

On the 27th March A&T club runners traveled to the Lake District to compete in the Coniston 14+. Runners arrived in glorious sunshine and the mountains were so close and eye catching. Mark Lysycia was driving along one section the course and commented that hills such as these are in the 16.7 miles.... I expected Lake Views quite flat! These roads rolled up and down for the 6 miles! Not put off we soon arrived to meet Mark Beresford, Malcolm Collins and Derek Coop. All changed, some of us tucked into snacks and drinks. I was mocked by some for nibbling on a Turkey Sandwich.

Start- Coniston Village. The first few miles twisted towards the village of Torver. Mark Two...there a joke in there!.... set off at a steady pace and Malcolm was nearby after 4 miles. I was hanging in a pack of club runners, Wesham, Lytham to name a few a couple of minutes back. The distance was a new challenge for me. After 7 miles starting to consider if this pace is too fast for there are 10 more! Malcolm Collins was off in the distance, Mark L still moving well but had felt tired in the days before the race and sensibly stepped off his usual race pace. At the turn around the opposite side of the lake my legs were OK I felt warm and tried to drink plenty of water. At 12 miles I was still strong. The Lake is amazing and on a sunny day the colour that hits your eye is delightful. The road was still winding and rolling up and down. Hit a hill at 15 miles and although tired I kept moving albeit at a slower pace.....next struggling with tired legs. Keep moving I said think its not far to go! I tried and moved on through 16 miles legs though its starting to hurt....had to walk, I'm frustrated!

Finish- supporters and runners encouraged me to step it up. I found my reserve and over the last 1/2 mile although in pain, with all the miles completed I realised that this was a time to enjoy.

16.7 miles. the line ..............Yippee done it!!!
Times: Malcolm Collins 1:57; Mark Beresford 1:59; Mark Lysycia 2:03, Marcus Taylor 2:12; Derek Coop 2:17

Reward - Pint of Coniston's real Ale! Bluebird

Thanks to all at A&T ... you all contributed to make this a great day!

Mud, Sweat and Beers at the Liver Hill Eggstravaganza

On Tuesday 8 A&T turned up for the Liver Hill Fell Race at Marl Pits. It should have been 9 but unfortunately most of us were late and Helen Minshall was left behind wondering what had happened. Sorry Helen!

The start time for this race isn’t ideal and it was a frantic dash up the M66 to get to there on time. Keystone Cops at the M61 roundabout as Marcus thought he’d keep driving round it until someone pointed him the right way.

Eventually we all arrived safely meeting Pete M and Craig Little there.

It was pouring down on arrival and it was obviously going to be a muddy one. No time for a warm up, straight to the start line and GO!

Off through a big puddle and then the sprint to the end of the field and upwards. This is a race to the top of Liver Hill then back the same way. Mark Ruscoe set off the quickest as we ran over footpaths towards the first of the climbs. Not too severe a climb but conditions under foot made legs very heavy.

The rain kept pouring and the path up to the hilltop soon became a mud bath. People were sinking up to their knees at nearly every stile approach and the odd runner taking the plunge into black bog (Brenda).

Mark was first A&T at the top of Liver Hill and was soon coming back down past the others, me next followed by Marcus, Cragsy, Pete (Post Op), Brenda, Lyndsey and Abbie. The downhill was quite tricky with rain in your eyes and rocks hidden in muddy puddles to be wary of but is was still great fun.

Mark was first A&T over the line followed by me, Craig, Marcus who performed a Jurgen Klinsmann type dive at the finish line to the delight of the organisers, Pete followed closely by Brenda, Lyndsey and Abbie who had a beaming smile on his face having really enjoyed herself. Either that or chuffed at being presented a Crème Egg at the finish line.

After a quick shower it was time to watch United in the clubhouse with a pint of the black stuff... at least the beer stayed good til the end!

Brenda popped upstairs for a copy of the results and returned with a box of free range eggs! That a fellow runner was selling...only at a fell race!

What more could you ask for, free entry, a hard run out in the rain and mud, a free crème egg, a pint and some cheap free range eggs. Only a United win would have topped it off.

Well done to Lyndsey in her first fell race and Marcus for his fine effort (and dive), and apologies again to Helen. Thanks to all for coming along.

1st Ashley Holt- Rossendale Harriers 34:56
23rd Mark Ruscoe 40:29
42nd Paul Jackson 43:41
66th Craig Little 46:27
69th Marcus Taylor 46:57
107th Peter Mulleady 52:43
109th Brenda Wane 52:56
118th Lyndsey Carter 55:10
123rd Abbie Eckersley 57:08
139 finishers

Next up- Wardle Skyline Fell Race 10th April details to follow.
Any one who needs further info re fell runs my details are on the Fell Section link on the website.

Liverpool 1/2 Marathon by Steve Coleman

This Sunday, in my quest to do more than a normal amount of half marathon runs saw me off to Liverpool. For a change L left early suspecting there would be delays. So much for getting there early, I was stuck in a queue to get into the car pack for half an hour, got to the start just in time to push in near the front and then hear the start was delayed due to people being stuck in their cars. So, in some discomfort, some of us after the start were seen leaving the main group to head off bush hunting. The course was not flat, for some reason I `d thought it was and it was very windy. This turned into a head wnid heading up beside the river for four miles. 4497 finnished and i came 159th and 1h 28m 28s.

This week's poll

Thanks to everyone who took part in last week's question about Monday/ Wednesday training.  It was great to see your positive response so hopefully the session numbers will start to increase from now on.

34% of you said you would do the sessions regular and another 34% said occasionally with only 11% having no interest at all.

Please have a go at this week's poll.
The blog is currently having some technical problems with the pictures, hopefully this issue will be solved very soon.

Just a reminder to all club members that it is the 2nd Fell Champs race at Marl Pits this tuesday night. You don't have to want to compete in the champs if you want to give it a go.

An ideal race for newcomers to the fells, so dig out your XC/Fell or trail shoes and come and join us! Free entry but bring some money for a pint after in the Marl Pits clubhouse

Race starts at 6.45pm from Marl Pits. Leaving Atherton Rail Station at 5.30pm sharp or meet us at the venue.

The Southport Bike Ride Report – A Donkey, Chips and Ice Cream experience!

5 cyclists turned up at the train station nice and early to take part in this key training session for the 100 mile challenge in just 4 weeks.

I ‘Gary’, Craig B, Brenda, Andrew Neary and Andrew Coates who was taking part in his first group ride and his first long bike ride in years. Andrew C said he would like to tag along for just 20 miles, more of this later.

It was a bright morning with a strong gusty wind as we set off up Newbrook Road and then down the A6. As we made our way through Chorley we all had to look twice as a donkey came out of the church, any kind of support was most welcome but we never expected a donkey in Chorley town centre!

A steady pace was being set at the front as we made our way through the scenic roads of Euxton and Croston towards the A59 Liverpool Road. As we went onto the fast dual carriage way into Southport we hit the wind head on and together with the sea breeze at Banks the final 10 or so miles was a killer!

We got to Southport in just under 2hrs 30 mines, we stopped off at the Fun land Cafe for a quick coffee and then onto the chippy for some much needed carb's. At Southport we met our old friend Sean Spillane who believe it or not had just competed in the Liverpool ½ Marathon in 1.24 and drove from Liverpool to Southport to take part in the journey home, now that is dedication to the cause.

Andy Coates took the bold decision to go against his previous predictions of ‘Ill just do 20 miles’ and then ‘Ill catch the train home from Southport’ and decided to cycle home, thankfully it was much easier with the wind behind us. We stopped off at Frederick’s ice cream parlour for some quick refreshments before getting back to Atherton.

Well done to all cyclist who took part in particular Brenda who showed loads of stamina and never slowed for a minute the entire ride and to Andrew Coates who dug in deep on those hills on the way back.

Another great day out was had by all on this 70 mile ride and we look forward to next Saturday’s Garstang ride.

Well done to Matt and the Marathon group for their 21 miles run and to Michelle Fairclough who we rode past on the A6 on our way home, Michelle was doing a 20 miler all by herself.

Race Report –Ultrafit St.Annes 10 mile by Garry Baines

24 Astley & Tyldesley Road Runners competed in the Ultrafit 10 mile race at St.Annes on Sunday and in the process came in up with a number of impressive individual and team performances.

This was the first time the race has been included in the CLGP calendar and apart from a little wind, conditions were near perfect. The club enjoyed the accolade of the Men taking the runners-up spot in the Team event and the Ladies collecting 3rd prize in their section

Individual performance of the day went to Shaun Moran, who collected 1st prize in the V50 category and finished, as first A&T runner, in 9th position overall in 58mins and 52 seconds. Truly a fantastic performance from this experienced competitor.

Hot on his heels was Peter (Whispering Death) Chan, first V45, who literally crept up and overtook Simon Ford in the final 200mts to record 59:14. Simon came in 7 seconds behind.

Mark Riches and Gary Atherton also enjoyed a close tussle with Mark edging ahead by 7 seconds in 62:36.

Steady runs followed from Steve Coleman, John Lee, rapidly returning to full fitness, Terry Gardiner and Gary Stevens. Marathoners Jon Hyde and Dan Reason kept a constant pace throughout, following in the tracks of Mark “the Jacket” Lysycia.

Matt Crompton stormed to a PB in 73:14 and Dave Crowe produced an excellent improving performance. Ian Hamilton showed a return to form and competed well in the V55 category for his time of 75:31.

Ray Taylor nursed a foot niggle to register a PB in 77:21, whilst Wayne Babynec dipped below the 80 minute mark. Paul Basnett steered the ship home for the Men, well inside the 90 minute mark.

Mary-Anne Tracey Aguera continued her excellent season and crossed the line as 2nd lady overall in an impressive time of 64:45. Josie Maley was 2nd A&T lady and looking strong in the dying stages, was just edged out into 4th lady overall in 67:46.

Carole Baines recorded a PB in 77:24 and Suzanne Gregory dug in to finish as 4th A&T lady. With 200mts to go Suzanne suggested this may be her last 10 mile race but a well-earned refreshment soon revived her enthusiasm.

Fiona Saunders and Denise Babynec stuck to the task well and were pleased with their times. Denise looks ready for London in a few weeks.

Overall another excellent performance by the club. Next CLGP race will be the Radcliffe 10k on 18th April.

Update on new Club Jackets - by Mark Lysycia

Hi Everyone,

Just to let you all know, I now have 21 confirmed orders for the new club jacket, so thanks to the members who have already ordered. Some are verbal and some by e-mail. Interestingly, the blog question indicates with only three days to go that 18(54%) have said yes to having one straight away, 3 (9%) will, but not just yet, 5 of you(15%) said not sure and only 7(21%) have said not interested at all. Out of the 18 who said yes to the blog question, if there is anyone who have done this but not yet give me a verbal or a confirmation e-mail, please do so as soon as possible.

marklysycia@yahoo.co.uk

I will bring all five sizes to St Anne's and will see if i can try to loan this stock till our club meeting on the 28th March.

It would be great if we could put in an order very soon for at least 35-40, as that's about the number of runners we turn out a races these days! Even if you do not currently take part in races, they are good enough to wear anytime.

I also brought the matching trousers to the club tonight and one member looked well smart indeed with top and bottoms to match( I said I wouldn't mention it Matt) and he is also going for the trousers as well which i have obtained a good price £16.50 usually £22.

Hope to see most of you on Sunday.

Mark

Spen 20, 14th March 2010 - Written by Malc Collins

Two of us from A&T decided to brave the hilly course of the Spen 20 near Huddersfield. I had done it before and knew it was a tough course but for Marie-Anne it was her baptism.
It was a pleasant sunny day, cool with a sharp wind and pretty good weather for running. We ran together much of the race keeping a very steady pace on a very demanding course. At 16 and a half miles though, I found myself with an unusual stitch and had to back off. Marie-Anne continued on at an excellent pace to finish in about 2hrs 23mins 30secs. I rolled in shortly afterwards in 2hrs 26mins 42secs.

As usual I had enjoyed a hilly challenge. I’m not so sure Marie Anne enjoyed it as much but I’m sure she is pleased with her time, well she should be! I just hope she is still talking to me after I suggested doing such a hilly race. Our consolation was it started an hour earlier than the Trimpell 20 and at the finish we thought of our comrades still running in Lancashire while we had a drink (all be it only juice)!

Ref : New Club Jacket

I've got 5 different sizes of the jacket which I will bring down to Thursday training if people want to try them on.

I'll also have them at St.Annes on Sunday, but there may not be as much time then to try them on.

Just a quick reminder to everyone who's running the Ultrafit St.Annes 10 mile race on Sunday. This is the 3rd race within our road championships and the 2nd of the CLGP calendar. If you've not entered already it may be quite difficult to get a place now. If you still want to run let me know and I'll see what I can do but no guarantees.

We're meeting at Atherton Station for a 9.15am departure. Registration is at the Fire Station in St.Annes on St.Andrews Road North. Post code for all the sat nav users is FY8 2JQ.

I am informed that there are no parking facilities available at the Fire Station itself and that you'll have to find space in the surrounding streets.

The start of the race is 10 minutes or so from the registration area and it is intended that we have a mass A&T warm-up, departing from the Fire Station at 10.40pm.

Good luck to everybody.

New Club Jackets

Mark Lysycia has kindly volunteered to look at purchasing some new club jackets (see pic) which if we can get enough interest will be available in a months time.

Various sizes will be available. Price around £26 which is very good for a quality sports jacket.

Jacket will have logo on front Left breast and club details on back, very similar to other running clubs.

They are superb quality and are smart enough to wear on any occasion. Over ten club members saw the jacket that Mark borrowed from the supplier last night and the feedback was very positive.

Also please tell Mark if you maybe looking to order one some time this year, don’t worry he won’t hold you to it, this is just to get a rough idea of demand.

Mark would need your feedback as soon as possible to see how many we need to order and the various mix of sizes.

Paul Mannion wins at Blackpool - by Garry Baines

In his first 5k of the the season, Paul Mannion set a blistering pace to win the Spring 5k at Blackpool yesterday in a time of 16:32 from a field of 114 runners. In what is his favourite distance, Paul saw the benefit of the hard miles over the winter months and expectations run high for the season as a whole.

Arnold Melling, now thankfully injury free, also saw success as he took the V60 prize, finishing 19th overall, in a time of 19:11.

Curry Night - Saturday 13th March

24 turned out for the curry night yesterday and a good time appeared to be had by all.

Peter Mulleady took his usual 1st prize in the eating stakes demolishing his starter, main meal and any scraps he could find but watch out for David Crowe who is hot on Peter's heels.

It was nice to see some new faces on this social night and a word for Colin Rigby who was involved in a motor accident earlier so couldn't make it, hope you are okay Colin.

The next social event is the Family Fun Night on Saturday 15th May, details can be found on this link http://astleyrunners.blogspot.com/2010/01/family-fun-night-saturday-15th-may.html

Trimpell 20 - Written by Matt Crompton

8 A&T runners made the trip up the M6 for the Trimpell 20 in much better conditions than experienced for the relays yesterday. A well organised car full, chauffeured by Dan Reason got there at 9:30 and were met by Mark Beresford. Sue Fletcher also travelled up alone with baby and Dad in toe to cheer her on. Steve Coleman, in true style appeared on the start line with 5 minutes to spare. I did try to persuade Steve to travel with us, doing our bit for the carbon footprint and all that, but i dont think he's got over travelling with me after the last time when we arrived in Helsby with a whole hour to kill!!

The race itself was run over a mixture of cycle paths, trails and a bit of road and was overall very enjoyable.....well most of it. Gary Atherton posted another great performance finishing 66th overall in 2:15:03, getting a gold bag of extra goodies for his efforts. Next home was Steve Coleman in 2:21:50, a bit jaded after running the Haigh Hall relays yesterday afternoon. Mark Beresford crossed next in 2:22:46 looking fresh as a daisy afterwards and in good shape for Edinburgh. Relative newcomer Jonathon Hyde continued his good run of form and showed he will be one to watch as the season progresses, finishing in 2:28:25 with Dan Reason hot on his heels with 2:29:03. Yours truly was next to cross and was more than happy with my 2:39:53, with Sue Fletcher right on plan with 2:44:54 and looking good for well inside 3:45 for Blackpool next month. Eva Tuer finished with a respectable 3:02:29 and was glad to get the 20 under her belt before the Paris Marathon on 11th April.

Once we were all finished we made the way back to central station to go and see our Mum's and complete some damage limitation with other halves as we were out most of mothers day!! Some discussion on the way back was focused around race strategy, with the Reason car full coming to the conclusion that "setting off way faster than planned then holding on for dear life" the only way to race.

A special mention to our 1st runner home who was very quiet in the back of the car on the way back, and we all thought you were sleepy.... well done for not hurling Gary. Let gorging on a Tracker bar, a twix and 2 bottles of Isotonic straight after you finished be a lesson to ya!!!

Well done to everyone who ran today and a special mention to the rest of the marathon group who ran 21 miles yesterday from Gin Pit.

Calling all Marathon runners.

Runs for W/C 15th March are as follows.

Monday – Track efforts for those who ran Saturday morning. Rest of us might have a gentle jog round though!

Tuesday - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3490332  – Gloucester St, Wigan Road, Schofield Lane to Daisy Hill, Hindley Road, Coupland Road, Wigan Road, Gloucester St, Central – 7.39 miles

Thursday - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3539584  Newbrook Rd, Salford Rd, Watergate Lane, Smethurst Lane, Hulton Lane, Wigan Road, past the Tavern, Roundhouse, 4 Lane Ends, Central. - 10.46 miles

Sunday – St Annes 10 Mile

Cheers

Haigh Hall Relays

The brutal Haigh Hall relay course seemed to be as attractive as a trip to the dentist as yours truly struggled to get 8 volunteers to take part. Alan Hilton came to the rescue declaring his interest at 0.05am Saturday morning via email and then getting a late call up via text message at 10am.

Cold and breezy conditions greeted up as the teams were announced, Simon Ford, Me, Stephen Coleman and Alan made the A Team whilst Michelle Fairclough, Craig Bradbury, Venessa Thompson (just back from holiday) and Gregg Ruscoe in his 2nd race for the club made up a mixed team.

The Crompton family, Derek Coop and mountain bikers Garry Baines and Andrew Coates came to support us.

Both teams performed well with Simon Ford clocking a super 22.37, i was next with 24.32, Steve Coleman came in 25.16 smiling with Alan Hilton with a stylish 24.22 to bring the A Team home in a respectable 9th overall.

Michelle got the mixed team off clocking 32.15 making a few expletives along the route, Craig B showing signs of a return to form did 26.30, the ‘tanned’ Venessa Thompson ran 34.36 and Gregg Ruscoe came in looking comfortable in 27.40 bringing the mixed team home in 22nd.

Marathon Taper - By Peter Chan

Marathon Taper.

Our friends who are running Blackpool will be literally on their Taper 3 weeks following the St Annes race.

There does then seem to be too much time on your hands after all the previous work, please stick ridgidly to the plan in the last 3 weeks … it is very hard but in a different way … psychologically even.

Do not be tempted to do more miles for fear of losing fitness. The idea is to get to the start fresh legged – trust to the training.

YOU ARE NOT ILL!! …. You will see what I mean….

You are not turning into a hypochondriac either – it’s the mental illness which is ‘the taper’

Adjust the diet as well to reduce the carb content by around 20% … (ramp up again in final week)… don’t change anything else.

YOU ARE NOT INJURED!!!.... Again … the mind plays tricks.

Do the work which is written down there … it is odd but the word ‘taper’ triggers an almost ‘job done’ mentality in most people (myself included). It is because your routine is knocked out of kilter … This 3 week period can actually demand more discipline than the big miles.

Half Marathon Update - by Steve Coleman

Having done 13 half marathons last year, ranging from the Shetland half to the south of Jersey as many know I sent myself the aim of 20 this year. Most to be under 1h 30 m. So far have done six, three already reported, Blackpool, 4 villages and central Lancashire. This Sunday I did the Haweswater half. Never had such great views and in sunshine. Did not even mind the fact it was all hills, well, not much. Came in at 1h 28m 35 s.

14 Feb was the Barcelona half had lots of over the top entertainment before the start. It was rather longer then a half but fun. This bride dressed as very pregnant kept pointing to me and the bump, just in case I shouted my name was Peter Mulready. 1h 28m 37.

28th Feb I missed the club race to visit my parents and on the way home sort of found a half marathon at RAF Cranwell. I used to live a mile from there in the early eighties so that was interesting. Weather was bad and two miles was cross country in deep mud. They even put in lots of hills. They put the names of the top 50 in the Sleaford newspaper so 29 years after I last got my name in, I reappeared! Last time was for pushing a bed though the town dressed as a female! 1h 29m 30.

Mary Anne does a sub 39 at Trafford - by Garry Baines

After ducking under the 40' minute mark for the first time in a 10k race earlier this year, Mary-Anne Tracey-Aguera has really got the bit between her teeth as she recorded an impressive 38:55 at the Trafford 10km on Sunday, finishing 3rd Lady overall in the process.

Congratulations again Mary-Anne -it augurs well for the rest of the season.

Duathlon Report - Written by Craig Bradbury

It was good to see a few new faces in the latest duathlon one of whom was winner Andrew Neary, after a strong bike ride he then went on to post a new run course record !! well done Andrew. Second place and bike leg winner belonged to Gary Stevens who seems to get stronger every week as his long illness now seems a distant memory, he has also surely found his forte in duathlon !!. The bronze position going to Sean Spillane but with just over a minute between the three of them it demonstrated what a great battle these guy,s enjoyed !. The sole lady was Melanie Fish who deserves a big well done she stuck to the task well on what is a tough bike and run course, even having company on the run as Bob was feeling the affects of a heavy cold !. Stuart Tetlow was delighted with his massive bike improvement and was soon asking when,s the next one !, Steve Garratt and John Spillane had a private battle on the run but seem pleased with their efforts, All in all a good morning was had. Once again thank you to Debbie and Sharon who kindly gave up their Sunday morning to timekeep, and to Matt Crompton who took a break from his marathon duties to bring a hot flask and did a spot of bike minding !!!. The next one will take place in the summer, details of which will be posted on the blog.

Cross Country - Barrow - By Pete Mulleady

A magnificent seven made their way from Atherton train station Saturday for the 2 hour trek to Barrow for the last Cross Country race this season. The Ruscoe clan (Mark, Dave & Greg), Terry G, Derek, Brenda & Me. Straightforward trip apart from Mark making full use of all the services on the way (think he was on a weight loss programme!). Thought I might get a few “are we nearly there yet” comments from the back of the car but that runner never made it! The organisers had done a great job of finding the only flat bit of fields in the Lake district and my initial thoughts were this is a bit of a boring course round football fields. Actually wasn’t too bad because there was another bit on trails which also had superb views across the bay and towards the mountains beyond (I’m sure I’ve mentioned before that all XC courses have something good!). It was a lovely sunny day, not cross country weather at all. Think we’ve been a bit blessed this year with the weather for XC apart from the Antarctic conditions in Townley Park!

I set off quickly (for a change!) but was left in the wake of Mark who probably felt like this was just a stroll in the park after his last trip to the lakes (6 hours up the mountains in 2ft of snow with Paul J on their Bob Graham recce). Terry followed me round closely all the way followed by Derek who was pleased to get round with no flare ups from recent injury. Then the battle royal between Dave & Greg. It was Greg’s first race for the club so Dave was pacing him round but 200 yds from the finish Greg decided he’d blow his older brother away in a sprint finish! One of the best finishes of the day saw Dave victorious (think there might be a few Ruscoe battles in the future) with our latest member Barry Allman (running for Horwich) sandwiched between them. Greg still has something to learn from Mark though about weight loss, better to do it before the race than after via Bulemia! Fantastic performance by Greg though in his first cross country. Brenda had another good solid performance in the ladies race and was there to cheer us on throughout our race.

Then it was back to the tent, or it would have been if someone had remembered it! Instead we went to have a look at Chorley’s tent. They asked us whether we wanted to join their club and I was tempted just to get out of the cold (some cloud had come over and the temperature had dropped a lot). They were also having a celebration with some sparkling wine and one of their lady runners was telling me all about the virtues of their “quick erect” tent. It was a lot bigger than ours so I think we are going to look at getting one for next XC season. Hopefully it will be easier getting it down than our current tent, though we’ve never had any problems getting it up. Can’t have other teams saying theirs is bigger than ours! After our nice warm coffee, vimto and biscuits (thanks Brenda) it was time for a nice healthy hot dog (or two) and then on our way home. That’s it for XC for this season (probably start again October) but there’s plenty of fell runs for that off road experience!

As for the final league positions - Our ladies finished 2nd in Division 3 & our veteran men won Division 3. Well done to them.

Haigh Hall Relays Sat 13th March 2pm

We are looking for some volunteers to run the Haigh Hall Relays next Saturday 13th March 2pm.

If you have never done this one its basically 4 legs x 3.75 mile run on a 'undulating' course.

We are looking for a team of men and a team of ladies, we can put in more than one team if we get enough volunteers.

It is also a good family afternoon out as there is a large kids park and plenty of space for them to burn off some energy.

Please let me know asap if you want to do it by emailing stevensgary@hotmail.com or ring/text 07979725096

Update

The committee have agreed to fund this event so its free of charge to all members

Teams to be announed next week.

Lostock 6 - Written by Garry Baines (in Germany!)

Well we’ve hit the 40 mark can you believe. Even with a few notable absentees, the Lostock 6 saw 40 A&T members competing, surpassing the previous club record, in a field of 329 runners.

The club had the honour of bringing home the 2nd place prizes in both the Men’s and Ladies overall categories against strong opposition.

It is naturally very difficult to mention every individual performance so I’ll try and pick out the highlights.

The winner of the race was Anthony Valentine of Bolton United Harriers who beat his nearest rival by almost 2 minutes with an astonishing time of 30:48.

First home for the club was Paul Mannion in a time of 34:15, finishing 9th overall. For 2nd, 3rd and 4th we saw a battle royale between Pete Chan, Simon Ford and Shaun Moran, who all finished within 7 seconds of each other. Shaun looked particularly strong at the top of “that hill”.

Mark (Mr. Reliable) Riches came home in a cracking time of 37 minutes dead and Gary Atherton continued his good form half-a-minute behind.

It was good to Arnold Melling back in a blue vest and he didn’t disappoint with a time of 38:30. The ever-improving Alan Hilton, shook off his pacer, to finish one second behind Arnold.

It was great to see John Lee and Gary Stevens taking significant steps back towards full fitness after serious injury and illness in 2009.

Jon Hyde, a recent recruit from the footballing world, confirmed his fitness levels with 39:24. With time on his side there’s more to come from Jon.

A host of other male runners improved on their previous times on the same course.

First lady home for A&T and 3rd lady overall was Josey Maley with 41:04. Josey is running superbly well and can only improve as the season progresses.

Sue Fletcher (or is it Hopkin?) is benefitting from the marathon training and came in 2nd lady, a minute or so ahead of Carole Baines in 3rd.

Suzanne Gregory ran solidly and with purpose, buoyed by a rare BWFC victory on Saturday.

Laura Babynec competed well in her first CLGP race and when she comes up against Mum, it should be an interesting outcome. Elaine Hodson battled hard with “that hill” and then enjoyed the last part of the course.

Finally Lorraine Broadhurst stuck to the task well, in what may be her last race for the club before she moves to Hampshire – bit flatter down there Lorraine!

All in all, a very rewarding day for the club (and for the marshal at the top of “that hill”) and I believe we’ve set a new benchmark for the rest of the CLGP season.

Club Meeting 28th February 2010 - Minutes by Mark Riches

Attendees (Committee) – Terry Gardiner (TG) Peter Mulleady (PM) Gary Stevens (GS) Malc Collins (MC) & Mark Riches (MR)

Performance of the Month – coaches & captains each nominate a stand-out performance; this will continue but in view of absences no nominations this month

Lostock 6 – record turnout of 40 runners; well done to everyone

Constitution amendments – following the AGM we have agreed 2 amendments

1. Any new committee members must be confirmed by members

2. Nominees for committee positions must be made in writing 14 days before the annual AGM

Finances – form with bank to amend signatories from Shaun & Bob to MC, MR & PM. As soon as confirmation received, MC will obtain missing statements & produce a/cs for next meeting

Meetings – following Blog vote, it has been decided to have meetings every other month with a social on the alternate month. The aim is to make the meetings less formal but still give members chance to voice their opinions. Presentation of Gill Pimblott cheque at next meeting – MC to make arrangements with the bank to obtain a large ‘presentation cheque’ & MR to confirm attendance of someone from the Oncology Unit to collect

Coaching courses (Level 1) – Simon attending on 6th March; PM & Matt to apply to attend on 27th March in order to use the credit we hold with EA after Bob & Dave P, who were due to attend, left the Club. PM took away 2 application forms for completion

Questionnaire – PM will pull together an annual questionnaire for all members to get their views
Session cover – PM reminded everyone that we need volunteers to cover sessions. Also there is a new session on Friday 17:45 start from Leigh Sports Village. This was started by Andy Coates, Garry & Carole Baines

GP5 11th April – TG pointed out that only 8 pre-entries so far & all members are asked to promote the race amongst family & friends & take entry forms to any races they attend. TG also still needs volunteers so if you are not running, please help out. The Club relies on the races to generate much of its income

Social – GS reminded everyone that the next curry night is on Saturday 13th March at the Far Pavilion in Atherton; 22 names so far. He went on to confirm that room booked for Xmas presentation on Saturday 18th December & following Blog vote a comedian came out on top so for the same price as last year’s band we will have a comedian & DJ; everyone present was in favour

AOB
• X-country (MR) – last race of the Club Champs is on Saturday 6th March at Barrow. MR pointed out that we should have secured promotion from Mid Lancs Division 3 for our ladies & male vet’s teams & our men will probably finish 3rd in Division 3 but it would be great if we could have a good turnout for the last one.

• Mid Lancs presentation (MR) – following on from the above presentation is on Friday 26th March at Bamber bridge CCM Club at 8 pm & tickets cost £4.00 each. TG said that if we have enough people going it may be worth hiring a mini-bus

Loch Ness Marathon and Festival or running 3rd October 2010 - By Alan Hilton

Loch Ness Marathon and Festival of Running - 3rd October 2010

Would you like to join the 4 A & T members already signed up for the marathon on the 3rd of October? If you don't fancy the marathon then there are also 5k and 10k events on the same day so I suspect that the atmosphere will be fantastic. It's a great opportunity to run amongst some of the most beautiful scenery in the UK and I've attached a link to the event website below for those who are interested.

I am happy to help organise things and there seems to be loads of good, cheap accommodation available. Direct flights from Manchester to Inverness on the Friday and Saturday are available from Flybe ranging from £80 to about £120.

I am sure we'll have a Monster time!! (I had to get a pun in there somewhere)
Let me know if you have any questions.
