A&T were out in force again last Saturday afternoon, getting stuck in at another tough event. This time though, it was a 1500m swim at Howe Bridge; Howe Bridge Marlins annual swimming event. This was another great event from the Marlins, well organised and well resourced in terms of trophies, raffle prizes and a good buffet to finish off. A&T co-opted a few new recruits as part of our registration (Sean Spillane & Mark Whiting who both did the Ironman in the Summer). We missed out on Mike Reason though, who swam for Marlins, which was a bit unfortunate as he's really good swimmer (very much like his dad). Some swimmers had also run cross country a few hours earlier, which was very impressive to see - Their muddy legs made a right mess in the pool though - ha ha. Anyway, the event kicked off at 3.45 so that 60 swimmers could finish in time for the buffet (good planning). Two swimmers per lane, each with a timekeeper. Every wave started together, so it felt very professional. Lyndsey & Marcus went off first and both did fantastically well, keeping a steady pace all the way through. They're both new to the distance, so deserve a lot of credit for having the determination to complete the distance. Marcus was very pleased but understated about his achievement (well done Marcus!). Surprisingly Lyndsey decided to not request the services of the RNLI on Saturday, which is against her usual form of involving the emergency services, but well done Lyndsey, great effort. Up next in wave two was Craig Brad, Mark Whiting & yours truly. The water was a lot cooler than last year, so fortunately it didn't fell like bathtime. Craig Brad, who hasn't been able to do much training recently, did very well and kept it going well to the end. Nice one craig. I hoped to keep up with Mark Whiting, but he set off far too quickly and managed to keep it going, so he finished well head of me and had a great swim. Mark Ruscoe and Mike Reason were in wave three. Both had a good swim and Mike showed his swim talent by posting a really good time. Mark hadn't been able to train much recently, due to work commitments, but still worked hard and achieved a good time. The other female A&T swimmer swam with some great Marlins swimmers and showed her long-standing talent. Good result. Sean Spillane swam in the last wave, showing his swim talent posting a really great time, better than last year. I think everyone really enjoyed it and the post-swim stuff was very enjoyable too - To be recommended for next year! A&T Results... Marcus 42:43 Lyndsey 31:54 Craig Brad 31:45 Mark Ruscoe 30:30 Terry H 30:01 Mark Whiting 28:14 Sean Spillane 24:28 John Lee wasn't able to compete, owing to his recent surgery - Next year then John! If anyone fancies doing something like this next year, there are a series of outdoor swims in the Lakes in Spring & Summer (Epic Swims). Ask me for info if you fancy it. It's really good fun and it's a great workout, giving significant improvements to your aerobic fitness. Well worth it. Cheers, Terry.
