At 9.15 on Sunday morning myself, Brenda Wane, Gary Stevens, John Lee and Sean 'Iron Man' Spillane
met at Atherton Station for a day out to the seaside.
A fairly seasoned bunch of bikers having ridden this and further distances at some speed before, we planned to 'take it steady' on the way out. The journey out was uneventful, and fairly quick, quicker than we expected at an average of 18.5 miles per hour. The weather was kind to us with just enough sunshine peeping through the clouds to glint on the love of Johns life, Cinelli Celia!
Following our usual chips and coffee we thought we would entertain the ladies in a local cafĂ© by attempting to climb the stairs to the loo in cycling cleats. Its difficult to know whether it was the sliding around that amused them or the bananas stuffed down the back of Sean’s tight fitting lycra shorts! But they did giggle at something!
On the journey home the weather was not so kind and whilst the rain stayed off the wind was awful making it feel as though the whole journey back, all 34 miles was steeply uphill. Such was the power being put on the road by Brenda to fight the wind that she broke a spoke or two!
By the time we got to Fredericks for ice cream, nobody had the energy to eat Ice Cream….except Gary, who always has the energy to eat Ice Cream!
On the last leg we were joined by Garry Baines who looked very fresh next to the rest of us.
I think we were all pleased to get back in just over four hours ride time, particularly given the windy conditions. The total distance was just over 68 miles with yours truly still having another 6 miles to go to get to Swinton.
A great but hard day. Thanks to Gary Stevens for getting us organised.
