WESHAM 10K SATURDAY 28TH NOVEMBER - By Mark Lysycia

A good turn out, 466 runners, for the 24th Wesham 10k road race. A very popular, rural undulating course with country lanes and lots of twists and turns makes this race very enjoyable. With the weather being almost perfect, this well organised race attracts a good selection of runners, with the Wesham team fielding big numbers.

I was pleased with my time of 41.55 and 104th position. A decent t-shirt and the usual banter with a lot of the regular race goers made it a good day in all, certainly beats Xmas shopping and getting covered in mud after a cross country!!!
A nice 10K for your diary for next November and with it being the 25th Anniversary should attract big numbers and hopefully some from our club.

Torremolinos Half Marathon – Sunday 7th February 2010 (Mark Lysycia)

The next Torremolinos Half Marathon has just been confirmed and will take place on Sunday 7th February 2010.

This will be the 4th time I have done this race and every year we have a number of runners from various local clubs all competing. This year we had 16 in the group and we walked away with 7 trophies! I raced unattached (only joined A&T end May).

I’m hoping that some of you would like to join me and other local runners next year for 2/3 days in the sunshine and get away from it all.

The facts:

Race day - Sunday 7th February 2010

This is now in its 22nd year

Around 1000 runners - some top elite runners and a group of Kenyans who come over to win the big money.

3,000 Euros 1st - 2,000 Euros 2nd and 1,000 Euros for 3rd, same for the ladies, so not bad for a couple to collect 6,000 Euros for just over an hour’s work!

Great sponsorship

Superbly organised

Televised on local Spanish TV

Goodie bag and T-shirt

Very supportive crowds

First 10k along the beach front and when the weather is nice, usually about 15 degrees at the start, it makes it even more enjoyable

Temperature approx 19-21 degrees

Flight cost Manchester/Malaga return approx £70/£80

Hotel cost approx £18-£22 per night half board

2 hours flight, 3 minutes walk to the train station, 3 stops down the line, 5 minutes walk to hotel, if we book in the same one – see list below.

Start of race is about 500 yards from the hotel and if we get the same hotel as last time, we run past it

And the best bit.....the race is FREE!!!!, which makes it even more unique

Besides the race, there are lots to see and do and a trip to the crocodile park 10 minutes away is a must!

We have been known to have a drink or two and as I run for a club with a reputation for having a great social side, this one is just up our street.

Listed below are some details you may want to look at.

Race entries not yet open, but keep an eye on the site.

So, if any of our runners, all abilities, fancy a go then I would recommend this race. We may even do our club proud and walk away with some prizes, I don't see why not! Which by the way are presented on a large stage with local dignitaries and a TV crew, not that I’ll ever step on to that stage!!!

2010 Road Championships

Following the discussion at the last Club Meeting, I have decided to abide by the original rules with regard to promotion and relegation in the Club Championships for 2010. This will ensure that the league system remains balanced.

Of course you all still have time to qualify for a higher league and any 10km or 5mile race you complete by 31st December 2009 will count. The time you record for a 5mile race will be converted to a 10km time by means of a race time predictor. If anyone is considering completing a 5miler and wants to know what time they need to achieve in order to qualify for a higher league, please let me know and I will inform you.

So here is the fixture list for 2010 followed by a few explanatory notes.

Thanks

Garry

*=CLGP Race

Notes:

1. Have included all the CLGP races (except Gin Pit). For the other races, have tried to concentrate on pure road races as there are more and more trail races in the CLGP.

2. Have tried to avoid any clashes with X/C and Fell races.

3. Road schedule finishes earlier this year but will allow runners to focus on X/C. We’ve had several clashes this year.

4. Chernobyl on 24th January does not clash with X/C. Pre-entry by latest 10th January is recommended.

5. Lymm is a 5km race run on Saturday afternoon. Fun Run also accompanies race. Could make it a club day out. Those not fancying the 5km could do the Fun Run. Could go for pub tea after.

6. Leek half marathon is included as Swinton not likely to run half marathon in 2010. If Swinton do ultimately run the half, we could replace either half with another race.

7. Green Drive included because of popular demand.

The Second A&T Duathlon 22nd November. Written by Bob Stevens.

On Sunday we had 20 in the Duathlon, with 6 of the 20 doing their 1st Duathlon of the series, with top cyclists Paul Bohannon,Craig Little in their 1st race and Iron Man Phil Tunney taking part.   It was set up to be an exciting race. Having set the 3 big guns Paul, Craig, and John Lee off last I knew it would be a great battle.  The 3 were neck and neck most of the way round with Paul coming out on top, John 2nd and Craig 3rd.
There were a lot of improved bike times which shows there has been a lot of bike training going on.
In the ladies' race Brenda again came out on top.In the run the 2 top runners Peter Chan and Sean Spillaine came head to head.Could Peter get revenge?  As expected it was those two who led from the start with Paul Bohannon in third place, followed by the two most improved runners in the Club, Rufus Bennett and Gary Atherton.  In the end it was Peter who came out on top this time in the run.

Overall winner was Paul Bohannon with a much improved Peter Chan 2nd.  There were some outstanding performances out there.  I can't wait for Round 3.  Who's going to be crowned Champion?  It looks like it's going to be Mr.Bohannon v Mr.Chan.  Let's get it on, can't wait folks, let the best man win. Well done to Brenda, it looks like she's going to be the ladies Champion.

Well done to everybody who took part, come back for Round 3 to make it another great event.  Again we would like to thank the 3 girls Debbie, Anita and Sharon for doing the time keeping.

Whinberry Naze Fell Race (BS) - Boxing Day

What a better way to blow off the cobwebs after a hearty Christmas dinner than getting your fancy dress kit on and running up a hill! No seriously..that is exactly what this blog is about.

We'll be going up to Marl Pits, Rossendale for an 11.30 race start. Fancy dress is optional (but preferred), and there are prizes for the best, maybe we could have an A&T theme?
Sweets will be dished out at summit by Santa.
The run is 4 miles with only 750' of ascent making it a perfect run out for fell debutants.
Anyone interested can email me or meet up at 10 am on Boxing Day at Atherton Railway Station with the rest of us.

£3.00 entry on the day.

It should be a right laugh..Go on..you know you want to!

Benidorm Half Marathon 2009 - By Paul Basnett

I am going on the trip to Benidorm this weekend and I had originally intended to just go for one of favourite pastimes...drinking!
Well last week in my moment of madness I decided that while I was there I may as well have a go at this half marathon!
So seeing that it's my first ever half marathon and that the longest I have ever run in my entire life is 8.4 miles I figured I would do this one for charity...anyway who needs training right :S
Therefore I am going to run for Christies as they looked after my Mother and prolonged her life a few years longer so I like to help give something back whenever I can!

Anyway I would be grateful if you could sponsor me however great or small at http://www.justgiving.com/paul-basnett

Thanks,

Paul

Tour Of Pendle Fell Race - By Paul Jackson

Saturday saw our first 'A Long' fell race (16.8 mile 4830') and it certainly lived upto our expectations. I remember Dave Potter warning me about the last two hills in the Gin Pit one night and he wasn't wrong.

The rain held off for the best part until the last climb back over the trig point, but obviously it was boggy pretty much throughout due to the amount of rain over the previous days.
Both of us found it a tough course and ran out of energy about half way round (despite eating a nutri-grain bar, a bag of nuts and raisins and a carb gel on the go! Pete would have been proud of me) with the worst climbing to come. Mark Ruscoe held on and got around in 3 hours 23 mins, which is a reasonable effort for a first attempt.
I am indebted to John Cross from Middleton Harriers who pretty much dragged my exhausted body over the finish line in around 4 hours 20mins.
Both of us have a score to settle next year to drastically improve our times. I promise to spend less time eating and more time running.
A few pints later in the day sorted us both out of course.

Red Rose x-country Bolton 21st November 2009 - By Mark Riches

A record turnout for x-country with 23 A&T runners lining up at Leverhulme Park along with Peter Chan’s daughter Louise, who competed in the U15’s race

The ladies were expecting 2 large laps so were pleasantly surprised when this was changed to 1 small lap + 1 large lap at the last minute. Everyone that is except Mary-Anne who was surprised when the race finished so quickly! Mary-Anne was first A&T finisher despite the above. Brenda Wane was next tracked all the way round by Sue Hopkins, who finished 6 seconds later. Lyndsey Carter, Abbie Eckersley & Michelle Fairclough finished within 1 minute of each other. Carole Baines finished less than 30 seconds later; Marjorie Leigh & Eva Tuer completed the line-up with strong runs.

Next it was the turn of the men with 3 large laps (9.8k) Simon Ford enjoyed another victory over Peter Chan, who was making his x-country debut (& I don’t think he enjoyed it!) Yours truly, Mark Riches, finished next after a great battle with Troy Topping & Peter Mulleady. Derek Coop, running under the synonym of Rufus Bennett, finished just in front of Terry Gardiner, who had another outstanding run. Shaun Moran & John Lee, who are becoming regulars on the country, finished next. Mark Lysycia, Steve Foster & Garry Baines finished within about 1 minute of each other. Craig Bradbury finished just over 30 seconds later; Paul Basnett completed the line-up finishing just outside the hour (& there were plenty of blue vests to clap him in)
Brenda dashed off to go swimming (where does she get the energy from?) but she still provided the refreshments & Lyndsey ran the ‘café’ in her absence. After we were all suitably refreshed, the tent was packed away & it was off to Peter ‘Arthur Daley’ Mulleady’s car boot to collect our new A&T tops (a snip at only £10 each)

Gill Pimblott 5km - by Gary Stevens

Last Sunday was the club's annual Charity race the Gill Pimblott 5km and 1 mile fun run.

The conditions were wet to say the least but never the less a respectable 89 runners entered into the main race. It was great to see so many A&T runners take part and especially so many new faces in which is not the easiest course in the world and in those conditions it would have felt more like 5 miles than 5km!

Guy Heyes was the first man home in 17 Min's.13 closely pursued by Gin Pit regular Rob Jackson 17.15 and our very own Simon Ford 17.18 who is now breaking into prize winning contention, a real tribute to Simon's training ethic.

There were a number of prize winners as well as other notable performances from the A&T runners

Shaun Moran 18.25 1st V50
Rufus Bennett 19.00 1st V40

A BIG THANK YOU to Terry Gardiner and his well oiled team of helpers who make races look easy to organise when they are not and thank you to everyone who donated prizes for the raffle.

The club raised approx £800.00 which will rise after the Xmas party raffle.

On a final note just to say it was great to see the British Legend Ron Hill take part and help with the presentation and his kind remarks about the race and the A&T club.

Lancaster half Marathon – Sunday 8th November - By Garry Baines

Sorry I couldn’t compete at Lancaster on Sunday, but the dreaded lurgy put paid to any chance of running.

Looking at the results there were quite a few notable performances. From a field of 666 runners (scary) Simon Ford continued in his rich vein of form, finishing 11 overall in a superb time of 1:16:30, slicing around 2 minutes off his PB. Simon’s performance was so outstanding that he finished a full 4 minutes ahead of Peter Chan, who admittedly had problems with the water-jump after 8 miles.

Steve Coleman recorded his best for the season in 1:23:31 beating his Wrexham time by a full 2 seconds.

Next Mark Riches was highly delighted with his 1:24:32 and was closely followed by Mark Ruscoe with 1:25:57. Malc Collins came home in 1:26:42 and Alan Hilton dipped under the 1:30 mark for the first time in 1:29:23.

Paul Jackson and Terry Hughes both ran respectable times and Ian Hamilton was delighted to beat Rufus, who was feeling under the weather. Finally Ray Taylor, running under a pseudonym, got round the course comfortably and was followed home by Steve Loughlin in his first Half.

Brenda Wane was first lady home in 1:46:14 with Carole Baines, following in her PB time of 1:48:41.

Michelle Fairclough ran the X country on Saturday and so probably tired in the latter stages.

However there were some great results from Sarah Sadler and Liz Ellicott, both running their first Half and from Julie Jenkins. Well done to all of these ladies – it’s a real achievement.

Rab Mountain Marathon 2009 - by Mark Ruscoe and Paul Jackson

The weekend of 21st September saw myself and Paul Jackson complete our first Mountain Marathon, two words that to many people do not sit well in the same sentence! This year's Rab Mountain Marathon was held over two days in the Howgill Fells of the English Lakes. The format was a score event whereby pairs and individuals compete over a set time period (in our class 6 hours day one, 5 hours day two) to locate as many checkpoints as possible and accumulate the highest score over the two days. The further away and more technically difficult to find and access the checkpoint is, the greater the number of points it carries, and all the kit needed for the two days in the field, such as tent, sleeping bag and food must be carried, making it a test of running, navigation, route choice and team spirit.

Both of us has completed plenty of fell races and weekends on the mountains in some fantastic and not so fantastic weather conditions, leaving us so enthusiastic and eager that we ended up the first people to arrive, register, pitch the tent in the cow field, buy the race t-shirt and sneak a beer or two in the local.
The next morning the apprehension was tangible as we queued up to receive our map and checkpoint coordinates and get on our way. After abandoning the search for the first checkpoint we eventually chalked up our first points and as the field spread out, began to settle into our stride. The sunny day provided good visibility for us to head out to the farthest checkpoints and bag some high scoring controls, but it equally managed to take it's toll on us as we limped into the overnight camp after only five and a half hours to a score of 170 points, leaving us in about fortieth position. With the tent pitched and kettle boiling the remainder of the day was spent mainly off our feet, eating and drinking as much as possible and taking in the fantastic atmosphere and scenery that surrounded us.

After waking up to the customary noisy campers, Sunday morning provided a misty start, but with fresh legs and feeling refreshed we were ready to pack up and start again. This time we found a rhythm much sooner and despite scaling a fell that was completely unnecessary were well on our way to some big points early on. The terrain proved to be very steep, with the contouring taking its toll on ankles as much as the climbs were on our energy. We found ourselves almost at the far perimeter of the event area with just two hours to get back to the finish, a distance that we had vastly underestimated given what we had already done and the terrain still to be negotiated. I really don't think either of us could have sustained the effort to the finish without the huge chocolate moment approaching The Calf peak. In the end the chocolate was all in vain as we were seventeen minutes late in the second day and subsequently docked 80 of our days total 170 points, giving us a total of 260 points and dropping us from a potentially respectable top thirty finish to a lowly sixtieth. All that was left to do was eat the free meal, throw away the cup of tea that tasted of fish, and hobble back to the car.

On reflection, the event was well organised, thoroughly enjoyable and certainly challenging. The atmosphere was superb and I am definately looking forward to competing in many more over the coming years. I don't think I only speak for myself when I say most of the enjoyment was in the preparation and build up, from spending a small fortune on kit, to spending hours out on the hills.

All

Please note the updated X-country champs document http://astleyrunners.blogspot.com/2008/01/x-country-championship-2009-2010.html

To avoid 'tactical racing' I have removed the SEL race on 28/11 from the Club Champs

I have chosen to retain the Mid Lancs race as there is a league position to chase & we may get promoted again!

Red Rose x-country Bury 7th November 2009 - By Mark Riches

The sun was shining when 14 A&T runners arrived at Chesham Playing Fields, Bury. However, the fact that it had rained for several days prior meant that the field was waterlogged.

The ladies were first with 1 small + 2 large laps. First A&T finisher, with a return to form after injury, was Brenda Wane. She was followed closely by Sue Hopkins, who had another great run. Lyndsey Carter was next followed 40 seconds later by Jodie Wagstaff & Michelle Fairclough, who crossed the line together. Abbie Eckersley finished just over 1 minute later & Marjorie Leigh completed the line-up with a solid run.

Next it was the turn of the men (1 small + 4 large laps) The rain, which started during the ladies race, was still coming down throughout the race. In the absence of Simon Ford, who was saving himself for the Lancaster Half on Sunday so formed one half of the support team along with Craig’s daughter Caitlin, yours truly, Mark Riches, was first A&T finisher. Troy Topping, who was still suffering from the after effects of a bad cold, did not finish. Peter Mulleady, who finished next, had a good run. Shaun Moran had another solid run closely followed by Terry Gardiner, who seems to improve with every race. Craig Bradbury was next having run the whole race without a number after he discovered that he had the wrong number on when he lined up at the start. Luckily I was able to advise the timekeepers of Craig’s correct number to avoid a repeat of last week when Craig appeared on the SEL results under the name of Steve Eldridge! John Lee, making a welcome return to racing for A&T, completed the line-up.

Brenda’s hot drinks & biscuits were a welcome distraction from the cold & wet weather (thanks Brenda)

Gill Pimblott Memorial 5k - 15th Nov

Hi all
Just a quick reminder to all A&T members that it is the clubs charity fund raiser on Sunday 15th Nov
The race is the Gill Pimblott Memorial 5k and 1 mile fun run.
We need as many entrants as possible to make this the most successful yet, so please lets have all members entering and also encouraging as many friends and relatives to enter either the main race or fun run.

There is a raffle after the race, and ALL money raised on the day goes to the ABC cancer charity at Wigan Infirmary

We also would like to ask all members to donate a prize to the raffle - either a bottle, chocolates, gift set etc.

Prizes can either be brought on the day or given to a committee member.

We are also still quite short of volunteers - please take a look at the list and let me know what you are willing to do to help out.

Cheers
Terry G

A & T Cross Country Champs - Boggart Hole Clough

Boggart Hole 31/10/09

20 A&T runners made it to Boggart Hole for the South East Lancs cross country on Saturday. It was a lovely day again (not real cross country weather!) so the Boggy Hole wasn’t quite so boggy. The last couple of times I’ve been it was a mud bath, ask Steve Coleman about his dancing on ice exploits! This time I think the only runner who tried out the full mud treatment (falling) was Paul Basnett, well he has been giving everything a go this year.

Ladies race was first off at 2pm. Sue was first home for A&T with a great run, 13th overall, and clearly improving with every race. Next in was Brenda running strongly followed by Lyndsey with another huge improvement. Abbie was next followed by Carole then Michelle (running off her Birthday celebrations from the night before!) and Marjorie running well.
Mens race set off at 2.30. Simon was first home with another great run, 14th overall. Next home was Troy coming back to form (despite selling me a yarn about not being fit he promptly set off straight after Simon) followed by Mark Ruscoe who keeps on improving (watch your back Simon) then me closely followed by Shaun finishing very strongly. Great to see Shaun back on the cross country. Next in was Steve Colerman who has clearly now got the hang of cross country followed by Terry Gardiner , Steve Foster , Paul Jackson, Craig Bradbury , Garry, Bacon Man & Paul Basnett. Excellent team performance by the men, 3rd team out of 10.

Many thanks to the excellent support provided by Sarah Jackson and family and Abbie’s Mum & Dad.
