Rivington Trail Half Marathon
If anybody has entered or is considering entering this race, the following message from Andy Staveley from Burnden roadrunners may be useful.
“I have been in touch with 2:09 events who are organising the Rivington Trail Half Marathon on September 19th as I know a few people have been asking about the planned route. I now know the race route and would be happy to show anyone who is planning to do the race or who is interested in entering.
I am planning a training run to show people the race route and this will take place on Thursday 3rd September – starting at 5.45pm on the bridleway immediately behind Rivington & Blackrod School .
Please turn up if you are interested.
Cheers,
Andy Staveley (Burnden RR) andy.staveley@bbmax.co.uk”

The 2nd A&T v Swinton Challenge
Many thanks to all the members who competed in the 2nd Swinton Challange on Wednesday.
I'm sure everyone enjoyed the occasion and the format was fair and well organised, even if some of the later runners needed a blind dog to get round the course in the dark.
Unfortunately we were unable to retain the trophy and narrowly lost the challenge by 4 to 3.
Never mind, it's the taking part that counts and we had a nice spread of runners with differing abilities.
Our thanks should also go to Swinton for organising the event, for the marshalls who stood out in the dark and of course to the chef who made the excellent hotpot and vegetable chilli.
We'll be back for our trophy next year Swinton!

Monthly Club Meeting Minutes
All of the club monthly meeting minutes are now accessed via a link on the right hand side of the blog called "Monthly Meeting Minutes Archive"
Gin Pit 5 - Volunteers
The next Gin Pit 5 race takes place on 11th Oct and I am looking to fill all of the race volunteer positions as soon as possible.
We would like to see all members helping out at least once at one of the club races throughout the year.
The funds raised by the Gin Pit 5 races are very important for the club and are the reason why we have low subs, free track sessions and various free do's during the year.
The October race is the final race of the CLGP this year and we will be expecting all of the Mon / Wed group runners to be taking part. This means that most of that most of the volunteers will need to come from the Tue / Thu group.
Please take a look at the list of vacancies in the "Volunteers" link on the "Gin Pit 5 - Sunday 11th Oct 2009" section on the right hand side of the blog and email me terrygardiner123@yahoo.co.uk with what role you are volunteering for.

Buxton Triathlon - By Bob Stevens
Another nice day for a triathlon, about 170 entrants in the race and fantastic scenery.
Both myself and Craig came out of the 400m swim together as usual, then came the bike the bike ride from hell over the peaks that included tough hill climbs.
The course was that severe that we only managed a 14.3mph average compared to 18 - 19.5mph on a normal course. Again we were neck and neck on the bike but too tired to speak much. The ride included a 40mph descent at one point.

As T3 started, Craig did a great impression of me going the wrong way out of transition, but again Craig ran fantastic to come 31st, as for myself I came 46th and won my category.
Again, we would like to thank Debbie and Anita for supporting us.
We rounded off the day with a nice healthy sausage and bacon barm in the cafe.

Warning to our lady runners
A word of warning to our lady runners, on Thursday evening whilst running down the canal near Pennington Flash Liz Ellicott was grabbed on the arm by a man riding a bike.
Luckily Liz managed to get away but it could have been potentially much more serious.
Liz described him as 'quite stocky' and later told the police of the incident.

Haigh Hall 4 - By Garry Baines
After my lamentable performance at Haigh Hall last year and as I missed the CLGP race there this year, I took Paul Bulter's number for last night's race to try and lay a few ghosts to rest.
In a small field I managed a PB in 27:49 so came away pretty pleased.
Just to put things into perspective our old friend Tony Battersby finished 3rd in a time of 21:25.

Swinton Challenge - Written by Garry Baines
Swinton Challenge Return Leg 26th August
The return leg of the Swinton Challenge is fast approaching and in view of Swinton's support of the first leg at Gin Pit, I would like as many of us as possible to turn up on at Swinton on the Wednesday evening in question in defence of our trophy.
This would be an ideal opportunity for some of the newer runners from the Tuesday/Thursday group to have a go at a short race as Swinton will be fielding runners of a similar standard and you will not feel out of place.
I will have details for the format of the race shortly and of the travel arrangements and venue for the event.
In the meantime make a note in your diary.

Leeds Tri 9th August - Written by Bob Stevens
It was an early get up on Sunday for everybody 5.30am meeting on Atherton car park. 7 Triathletes and 5 spectators Sonia armed with bacon barms for everybody, i could sense pre-race nerves as the race drew nearer Sonia being affected the most but as she started the swim with everyone cheering her on she settled down and did fantastic in her 1st triathlon.
John Lee, Craig Bradbury and Mark Ruscoe finished in the top 30 out of a field of 200 just tells you what outstanding athletes they are, both John and Mark doing their first tri's
I was really proud of the 3 girls who took part Lyndsey 'Lance Armstrong' Carter, Brenda Wane (who was carrying a knee injury) and 'super' Sonia Gadsby who all did the club proud, as for myself i was really chuffed to win my category !
The day was fantastic for everyone, i would like to thank the 5 spectators who came to Leeds to support us, Debbie, Sharon, Sandra, Anita and Dave it meant a lot to us.
To round off the day we called in at a pub spotted by Sonia on the bike route and had a pub lunch with myself and John teaching everyone how to speak proper Athertonian slang when ordering our food ! JACKET PRUAITER, BABBY'S YEAD AND PEE WET, FEESH, BEALT HAM BUTTY AND TWO CUPS OF TEAY !!!
Far too hot in Newark - By Steve Coleman
After a slow recovery from injury I felt ready for getting back into half marathons. Pity it was today. Newark was very hot. It was a late start and people were sweating at the start line. Got into a good pace and at nine miles was doing well. Then the hill hit and I overheated! There were many drink stations and I used them all, it was not enough. I and the rest of the runners started to suffer. A few went down. Came in at 1 hour 32 min 32 sec and 155 out of 1047.
