Red Rose x-country Bolton 21st November 2009 - By Mark Riches

A record turnout for x-country with 23 A&T runners lining up at Leverhulme Park along with Peter Chan’s daughter Louise, who competed in the U15’s race

The ladies were expecting 2 large laps so were pleasantly surprised when this was changed to 1 small lap + 1 large lap at the last minute. Everyone that is except Mary-Anne who was surprised when the race finished so quickly! Mary-Anne was first A&T finisher despite the above. Brenda Wane was next tracked all the way round by Sue Hopkins, who finished 6 seconds later. Lyndsey Carter, Abbie Eckersley & Michelle Fairclough finished within 1 minute of each other. Carole Baines finished less than 30 seconds later; Marjorie Leigh & Eva Tuer completed the line-up with strong runs.

Next it was the turn of the men with 3 large laps (9.8k) Simon Ford enjoyed another victory over Peter Chan, who was making his x-country debut (& I don’t think he enjoyed it!) Yours truly, Mark Riches, finished next after a great battle with Troy Topping & Peter Mulleady. Derek Coop, running under the synonym of Rufus Bennett, finished just in front of Terry Gardiner, who had another outstanding run. Shaun Moran & John Lee, who are becoming regulars on the country, finished next. Mark Lysycia, Steve Foster & Garry Baines finished within about 1 minute of each other. Craig Bradbury finished just over 30 seconds later; Paul Basnett completed the line-up finishing just outside the hour (& there were plenty of blue vests to clap him in)
Brenda dashed off to go swimming (where does she get the energy from?) but she still provided the refreshments & Lyndsey ran the ‘cafĂ©’ in her absence. After we were all suitably refreshed, the tent was packed away & it was off to Peter ‘Arthur Daley’ Mulleady’s car boot to collect our new A&T tops (a snip at only £10 each)
